Evaluation of Canine Shoulder Arthroscopy for Anatomical and Safety Considerations.

INTRODUCTION: Arthroscopy is a well-established diagnostic modality for various orthopaedic conditions in veterinary medicine. The aim of this study was to describe the relationship of canine shoulder arthroscopy portals to major muscular, ligamentous, and neurovascular structures for anatomical and safety considerations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Arthroscopic exploration of 20 adult canine cadaver shoulders was performed. Each shoulder region was dissected layer by layer to the level of the joint. Musculotendinous, ligamentous, and cartilaginous lesions were documented. The distance was measure

Bony Bankart Lesion: Diagnosis, Management, and Outcomes.

» Bony Bankart lesions are fractures of the anteroinferior glenoid rim, commonly associated with a traumatic anterior shoulder dislocation, and are diagnosed through radiological imaging and physical examination. Young male athletes playing contact sports are at highest risk of these injuries. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial because, if left untreated, recurrent anterior shoulder instability and glenoid bone loss can occur. Both nonsurgical and surgical treatment options are available depending on the size of the lesion, with arthroscopic repair being the most common treatment method

Isolated scapula fracture: Ice hockey player without trauma.

INTRODUCTION: Scapular fractures are generally occur from in high-energy traumas and are associated with a high incidence of morbidity and mortality. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We present an unusual scapular fracture that occurred with a rare mechanism. A 23-year-old male patient who led an active sports life for 10 years and played ice hockey for the last 5 years. In a competition, he felt a sudden pain in his right scapula after hit the puck. He did not experience any direct trauma to his shoulder and there was no evidence of any pathological fracture. The fracture was isolated in the scapular b

Swimming overuse injuries associated with triathlon training.

Most triathlon overuse injuries occur due to the running and cycling aspects of the sport. By nature of swimming being a non-weight-bearing sport, triathletes have a tendency to use swimming for rehabilitation and recovery. Swimming has a significantly lower injury rate than the other 2 disciplines in a triathlon. Most triathletes use the freestyle stroke, because it is typically the first stroke learned, it is for many the fastest stroke, and by lifting the head the freestyle stroke allows triathletes to sight their direction, which is important in open water swimming. During the freestyle st

Acute arthroscopic removal of a bullet from the shoulder.

Arthroscopic procedures are frequently used for extraction of foreign bodies such as bullets from joints. Retained bullets have some effects as loose bodies that cause mechanical symptoms and destroy articular cartilage. Bullets and lead particles in synovial fluid dissolve in time and cause periarticular fibrosis, chondrolysis, hypertrophic arthropathy, and sometimes chronic lead intoxication. A 21-year-old man was treated after he sustained a gunshot wound to his left shoulder. Shoulder arthroscopy was performed through the standard posterior portal. The bullet was observed in the posterior

[Obstetrical brachial plexus palsy--etiopathogenesis, risk factors, prevention, prognosis].

Obstetrical brachial plexus palsy (OBP) complicates a small proportion of births. The incidence is believed to be 0.35 to 5 cases per 1000 live births. Risk factors of OBP included: 1/ large birth weight, 2/ shoulder dystocia and prolonged second stage of labour , 3/ instrumental vaginal delivery (forceps delivery, vacuum extraction), 4/ diabetes mellitus and mother's obesity, 5/ breech presentation, 6/ delivery an infant with OBP in an antecedent delivery. Historically, the cause of OBP was excessive lateral traction applied to the fetal head at delivery, in association with anterior shoulder

Decreasing Incidence of Youth Wrestling Injuries: A 10-Year Analysis of National Injury Data.

BACKGROUND: Wrestling is among the most common youth sports in the United States, with about 260,000 high school participants annually. There is a lack of literature investigating wrestling injury profiles and mechanisms of injuries. In the past 15 years, urgent care utilization has increased, and National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) concussion protocols have been developed and implemented. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to analyze causes, diagnoses, body parts, and trends associated with wrestling injuries presenting to US emergency departments. It

Shoulder dystocia.

Shoulder dystocia is an uncommon but not rare obstetric emergency. Death of the infant is unusual but perinatal morbidity is frequent and can result in permanent injury. These cases carry significant medico-legal implications. This chapter covers the mechanisms, predisposing factors and management of shoulder dystocia. A well-rehearsed sequence of manoeuvres to manage shoulder dystocia will minimize fetal trauma.

Humeral Avulsion of Glenohumeral Ligament Lesion - A Case Report and Surgical Considerations.

INTRODUCTION: Humeral avulsion of the glenohumeral ligament (HAGL) is a rare but important cause of shoulder instability, often underdiagnosed due to subtle imaging findings and associated common injuries like rotator cuff tears, resulting in persistent pain, recurrent instability, and failure of conventional stabilization procedures. CASE REPORT: We present a case of a 48-year-old male who sustained an anterior HAGL lesion with an associated subscapularis tear following a traumatic anterior shoulder displacement. Magnetic resonance imaging and arthroscopic visualization confirmed the diagnos

A passive upper-limb exoskeleton reduced muscular loading during augmented reality interactions.

The aim of this study was to evaluate a passive upper-limb exoskeleton as an ergonomic control to reduce the musculoskeletal load in the shoulders associated with augmented reality (AR) interactions. In a repeated-measures laboratory study, each of the 20 participants performed a series of AR tasks with and without a commercially-available upper-limb exoskeleton. During the AR tasks, muscle activity (anterior, middle, posterior deltoid, and upper trapezius), shoulder joint postures/moment, and self-reported discomfort were collected. The results showed that the exoskeleton significantly reduce

Postoperative Rehabilitation of Anterior Glenohumeral Joint Instability Surgery: A Systematic Review.

Anterior glenohumeral instability is the most common form of shoulder instability. The systematic review summarizes the latest research on rehabilitation after Bankart repair. Inclusion criteria included postoperative rehabilitation and published in English between 2000 and 2019. Studies were excluded if they were addresses, comments, or editorials, or included other shoulder injuries or cadaver models. Two rounds of review using Rayyan QCRI software were performed for screening and full text search, and the articles were graded for levels of evidence. Of the 1982 articles, 14 articles were in…

Glenohumeral deformity in children with brachial plexus birth injuries.

Shoulder deformity remains the most common musculo-skeletal sequela following a brachial plexus birth injury. The natural history of untreated glenohumeral deformity is one of progression in this unique patient population. In infants and young children with persistent neurological deficits, shoulder dysfunction becomes a major source of morbidity, as these children have extreme difficulty placing the hand in space. The functional limitations due to muscle denervation and the resultant periarticular soft tissue contractures and progressive osseous deformities have been well-characterized. Incre

Subscapularis tendon rupture in an 8-year-old boy: a case report.

Since falling off a motorcycle 2 years earlier, an 8-year-old, right-hand-dominant boy reported anterior shoulder pain and weakness. After being evaluated by his family physician and completing a course of physical therapy with no symptomatic improvement, he was seen at our institution. Physical examination was remarkable for diminished strength with internal rotation (4/5). In addition, bellypress and lift-off tests were positive, suggesting a lesion of the subscapularis. Magnetic resonance imaging of the shoulder showed a full-thickness subscapularis tendon tear and a supraspinatus tendon si

[Pathomorphology of shoulder instability].

In cases of a traumatic anterior first-time dislocation of the shoulder, pathomorphological changes may initially occur at three different sites: at the capsule itself, at its origin or at its insertion. The typical injury is an avulsion of the labrum and the capsule from the glenoid and is called a Bankart lesion. There is a tendency to underestimate the amount of plastic deformation of the capsule and alternative injuries, such as avulsion of the capsule from the humeral head (HAGL lesion). Bony deformities at the humeral head or at the glenoid are of utmost importance for the prognosis of s

Understanding multidirectional instability of the shoulder.

OBJECTIVE: To provide an overview of the evaluation and treatment of the patient with multidirectional shoulder instability. DATA SOURCES: I searched MEDLINE for the years from 1980 to 2000 using the key words "shoulder joint," "instability," "dislocation," "multidirectional shoulder instability," and "inferior capsular shift." DATA SYNTHESIS: Multidirectional instability is symptomatic glenohumeral subluxation or dislocation in more than 1 direction: anterior, inferior, or posterior. The primary pathology is a loose and patulous capsule, and the entity is more common than previously recogni

[Scapula alata following a gunshot injury].

BACKGROUND: The clinical condition "winged scapula" (scapula alata) is frequently not recognized as such. The accompanying symptoms are often attributed to more frequently occurring shoulder disorders, which can lead to unnecessary surgical procedures. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 41-year-old man was shot during a robbery 3 years ago, resulting in a complete paraplegia from the fourth thoracic vertebra downwards. Within a year of the attack, during rehabilitation towards wheelchair use, he developed pain around his right shoulder. He also had diminished strength when extending his right arm and proble

Multidirectional instability: evaluation and treatment options.

Multidirectional instability of the shoulder is a condition defined by symptoms of shoulder instability in more than one direction. Patients typically have generalized ligamentous laxity and may be involved in repetitive overhead activities. Initial treatment is with a physical therapy program. Patients who fail non-operative treatment are candidates for arthroscopic or open stabilization procedures.

Intra-articular partial-thickness rotator cuff tears: analysis of injured and repaired strain behavior.

BACKGROUND: There are few biomechanical studies regarding partial-thickness rotator cuff tears and subsequent repair. HYPOTHESIS: Partial-thickness intra-articular supraspinatus tendon tears increase articular-sided tendon strain as they increase in size. Repair of these tears will return strain to the intact state. STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study. METHODS: Twenty fresh-frozen human cadaveric shoulders were prepared by dissecting to the supraspinatus tendon and leaving the native footprint intact. The tendon footprint was measured with digital calipers and divided into thirds (ant
