Combined deficiency of beta-galactosidase and neuraminidase: three affected siblings in a French family.

Three affected siblings from France have been described with a combined deficiency of beta-galactosidase and neuraminidase. Oligosaccharides were found in urine and the enzyme activities determined in leukocytes and cultured fibroblasts. Further characterization of the defect in this family is needed.

Pyloric atresia and epidermolysis bullosa letalis: a lethal combination in two premature newborn siblings.

Pyloric atresia and epidermolysis bullosa letalis are rare congenital anomalies. The association of the two diseases in siblings has not been reported previously. This paper describes such as association in two newborn infants of caucasian parents with no family history of similar anomalies. Problems in management included severe fluid and electrolyte losses, systemic infection, and prematurity, which led to the death of the two infants. The question is raised whether the two abnormalities are expressions of closely linked genes. The presence of epidermolysis bullosa should alert the pediatric…

Cleft palate and multiple anomalies in one of two siblings with partial 13 trisomy.

Siblings with multiple congenital anomalies secondary to familial partial trisomy of chromosome number 13 are described. In addition to other findings, the younger child exhibited a cleft of the soft palate. The mechanism of transmission of the chromosomal abnormalities, the relationship of the physical abnormalities and the chromosome findings, and the significance of these findings in the consideration of recurrence risks in future pregnancies are discussed.

'Family in shambles': professional perspectives on supporting families after sibling sexual abuse.

Background: Sibling sexual abuse (SSA) creates particular challenges for practitioners working with affected families, as it damages multiple family relationships, generates loyalty conflicts among parents and children, and produces ambiguity around responsibility. These challenges may necessitate a specific treatment for the impact of SSA. However, information on how to approach the challenges during treatment is scarce. Objective: This study qualitatively investigated, from a practitioner's perspective, helpful elements for tailoring the treatment of families that had been exposed to SSA.Part

Early identification of LPIN1 variant in a child with severe myoglobinuria and a history of sibling deaths.

Rhabdomyolysis in children is frequently attributed to viral myositis or trauma; however, severe or recurrent episodes precipitated by febri … s. The patient's family history was significant for consanguinity and the unexplained deaths of two siblings at similar ages. Laboratory investigations revealed massive rhabdomyolysis with a creatine phosphokinase (CPK) level of 59,679 U/L and significant myoglobinuria, though renal function remained initially preserved. Given the severity of the presentat …

Sibling Relationships in Mixed-Status Immigrant Families: A Qualitative Interpretive Meta-Synthesis.

This study examined how legal status differences shape comparison, caregiving, emotional strain, and solidarity among siblings in mixed-status immigrant families. Siblings play a critical role in immigrant family life, yet research has largely focused on parent-child dynamics. In mixed-status households, siblings hold different legal statuses, creating unequal opportunities and responsibilities that shape their relationships. A qualitative interpretive meta-synthesis was conducted on 13 studies of US-connected mixed-status and transnational families, identified through systematic searches of f…

Investigating the potential sibling species status of Anopheles fluviatilis in Gadchiroli, Maharashtra, India.

BACKGROUND OBJECTIVES: India has made significant progress in combating malaria and reducing malaria-related mortality and morbidity. Yet, local transmission and malaria hotspots are important hurdles as India looks to achieve malaria elimination by 2030. Gadchiroli district is a highly malaria-endemic area in Maharashtra state of India. It accounts for more than 50% of the reported malaria cases in the state. Anopheles culicifacies and An. fluviatilis are the primary malaria vectors in the area. However, the status of vector sibling species is unknown in the district. In this study, we aimed

Three Siblings With an Attenuated Presentation of Perlman Syndrome: A Case Report and Literature Review.

INTRODUCTION: Perlman syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive overgrowth disorder with a predisposition to Wilms tumor, caused by biallelic variants in DIS3L2. The majority of patients die in infancy due to respiratory and/or renal failure, limiting the reports of patients surviving into childhood. METHODS: Exome sequencing was performed in the proband and her older brother. A younger sibling subsequently underwent targeted variant analysis. RNA sequencing was utilized to investigate the functional impact of the missense variant. RESULTS: Three siblings presented at birth with fetal macrosomi…

Reprint: Sibling sexual abuse: A commentary based on seven studies, seven insights.

Sibling sexual abuse (SSA) is a complex and underexplored issue with profound impacts on individuals, families, and communities. Current research, although developing, is insufficient and fails to capture the many layers and core aspects of SSA. This commentary highlights insights from seven qualitative studies conducted by the author between 2013 and 2020, based on interviews and focus groups with siblings, parents, and professionals. The findings reveal the need for stronger research-practice relationships, an understanding of the subjective experiences of abuse from child and adult survivor…

Firstborn's empathy and the sibling relationship quality: The moderating role of maternal emotional availability.

This study examined how a firstborn child's empathy interacts with maternal emotional availability (EA) to predict later positive sibling relationships. The study included 108 families expecting a second child who also had a 10- to 45-month-old firstborn child (M = 24.6 months, SD = 7.42; 58 girls). Before the second-born child arrived, the firstborn child's empathic abilities were measured, and a mother-child play interaction was videotaped and coded for maternal EA. At 16-18 months postpartum, mothers completed questionnaires assessing the quality of the sibling relationship. Maternal EA mod

"Just listen to me": Experiences of therapy after childhood sibling sexual abuse.

BACKGROUND: Sibling sexual abuse (SSA) is considered to occur more frequently than other types of intrafamilial sexual abuse and is related to numerous detrimental outcomes. Despite this, the literature on SSA is limited, which results in a knowledge gap on the effects of this type of abuse and specifically on survivors' experiences of therapy and challenges for interventions. OBJECTIVE: This study extends current knowledge by qualitatively investigating experiences of therapy of adults who experienced childhood SSA, to identify specific challenges and considerations for therapeutic intervent

Investigating genotype-phenotype correlations in primary ciliary dyskinesia: a sibling cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia (PCD) is a complex mostly autosomal recessive disorder characterized by dysfunction of primary motor cilia, leading to multisystemic manifestations, primarily affecting the rhino-sinopulmonary system. Despite advancements in understanding its pathogenesis, genotype-phenotype correlations are not fully elucidated. Utilizing sibling cohorts offers a promising approach to investigate these genotype-phenotype correlations in PCD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective cohort study, conducted from 2010 to 2023 at Soroka University Medical Center in Be'er

Two Incidental Sibling Diagnoses of Netherton Syndrome in Separate Visits: A Case Report.

Netherton syndrome (NTS) is a genetic disorder that predominantly affects the hair and the skin, and it can have a wide variety of presentations. The genetic syndrome is more common with consanguineous parents. Given the rarity and varying presentation of the condition, a few cases have been reported in the literature. We present an unusual case of two incidental diagnoses of NTS in siblings of consanguineous parents, manifesting as erythroderma and other symptoms that were initially diagnosed as pityriasis rubra pilaris and psoriasis in separate visits. Physicians must maintain a high index o…
