Tribal communities in India constitute the largest tribal population in the world. There are about 635 biological isolates (tribes and subtribes), which constituted 8.08% (about 84.3 million) of the total population of India as per the 2001 census. Out of 635 scheduled tribes (aborigines), 62 live in the state of Orissa alone forming about 10.8% of the tribal population of India. Orissa state occupies an important place, being the 3rd in rank for the highest concentration of tribal population in the country. In India, tribal communities are highly vulnerable to hereditary diseases and have a h

Sickle cell disease (SCD) and sickle cell trait (SCT) are highly prevalent in Africa. Despite public health implications, there is limited understanding of community issues for implementing newborn screening and appropriate family counseling. We conducted a 3-day workshop in Kumasi, Ghana, with community leaders as lay program development advisors to assist the development and implementation of a Sickle Cell Counselor Training and Certification Program. We employed qualitative methods to understand cultural, religious, and psychosocial dimensions of SCD and SCT, including the advisors' attitud…

CONTEXT: Premarital haemoglobin screening is an important strategy for the control of Sickle Cell Disease.
AIMS: To determine the prevalenc … being HbSS.
CONCLUSIONS: Three quarters of the premarital couples had HbAA, while one quarter had Sickle cell trait. A very low percentage of the couples (2.8%) had 1:4 risk of their offspring inheriting SCA (HbSS). About 2/3 of the subjects would call-off the marriage if there was risk of their offspring inheriting SCA.

Genes for thalassaemias, sickle cell disorders and Glucose-6- phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency are known to be associated with prevalent malaria infection. The prevalence in the heterozygote state for sickle cell anaemia (SCA), G6PD and alpha thalassaemia is between 25-30% in Nigerians but the prevalence for the beta thalassaemia trait (BTT) is low. Under-diagnosis of BTT may arise from the similarity in its clinical manifestation to that of SCA which is of high prevalence in Nigeria and secondly because the hypochromia and microcytosis associated with it may be misdiagnosed as iron d

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic disorder that results in deformity of red blood cells. Renal dysfunction affects 5-18% of patients with SCD. To date, few studies have described urinary levels of transforming growth factor β-1 (TGF-β1), which is a marker of fibrosis, as a biomarker in identifying patients at risk of developing renal disease in SCD. The aim of this study is to determine prevalence of sickle cell nephropathy in Egyptian SCD patients. We aimed also to evaluate the association of urinary TGF-β1 with other conventional biomarkers of renal damage in SCD patients to

Sickle cell trait (SCT) is estimated to occur in 6% to 10% of Africans, and the United Kingdom (UK) prevalence rate has been estimated at 3.2%. Although sudden death in sickle cell disease is well known, its occurrence in SCT is rare and requires extremes of physiological stress. We present a case of a 29-year-old black woman who died suddenly during a period of religious fasting. Her medical history was unremarkable, and there was no family history of sickle cell disease. At postmortem, she was found to be dehydrated, and macroscopically, the main abnormal findings were congested lungs and a …

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) is used commonly in an attempt to reduce the duration of neutropenia and hospitalization in patients undergoing chemotherapy and to obtain hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) for transplantation applications. Despite the relative safety of administration of G-CSF in most individuals, including subjects with sickle cell trait, severe and life-threatening complications have been reported when used in individuals with sickle cell disease (SCD), including those who were asymptomatic and undiagnosed prior to administration. The administration of G-CSF has no…

We present the case of a 40-year-old patient with sickle cell trait who underwent bilateral breast reconstruction with microvascular TRAM flap transfer. Intraoperatively, the patient developed arterial anastomotic thrombosis of the right breast flap. The left breast flap had already been harvested and was placed on ice. Both anastomoses were then successfully completed. Postoperatively, the patient developed a pulmonary embolism and heparin-induced thrombocytopenia. On postoperative day 12, the left cutaneous Doppler signals were lost, and exploration revealed a thrombosed pedicle and nonviabl…

Red blood cells (RBCs) transfusion is a common practice in the treatment or for the prevention of complications of patients with sickle-cell disease. In surgery, pre-operative transfusions are frequently given to prevent peri-operative complications. There is no consensus however on the best regimen of transfusion for this purpose. The transfusion techniques are muliple. In addition, pre-operative transfusion therapy is reported to be largely responsible for an increased morbidity and mortality in patients with sickle cell anemia undergoing surgery. During the period 1990-2000, 16 patients (4

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a group of inherited blood disorders characterized by abnormal hemoglobin production, affecting individuals worldwide with varying prevalence across different populations. Manifestations vary, ranging from severe to mild. SCD is characterized by the presence of hemoglobin S (HbS), which distorts erythrocytes upon deoxygenation, leading to sickling. This results in hemolytic anemia, painful vaso-occlusive crises (VOC), and multiple organ damage, including bones, due to microinfarcts. Sickle cell trait (SCT), or carrier status, is not considered an SCD and often runs…

BACKGROUND: Since 2006 the CIDD, the Paris information and screening center for sickle-cell disease, provides free assistance for adults who may be at risk of having children with sickle-cell disease. Recently, an increasing number of parents of a silent-carrier newborn detected by systematic neonatal screening are attending the center. We present a retrospective study of the impact of such information and screening on people.
METHODS: The study involved 81 silent-carrier men and women aged 18 to 45 years, interviewed using a telephone questionnaire (n=70) or during consultation (n=11) one to

Over the last 22 years, we have encountered 34 examples of a highly aggressive neoplasm with a microscopic morphology that is highly predictive of finding sickled erythrocytes in the tissue. With the exception of one patient, all are believed to have had sickle cell trait or, in one case, hemoglobin SC disease. These 33 patients are the subject of this report and, where their race was known, they were all blacks between the ages of 11 and 39 years. Between the ages of 11 and 24 years, males predominated by 3 to 1. Beyond age 24, however, the tumors occurred equally in men and women. The domina…
