Frontoparietal and Default Mode Network Contributions to Self-Referential Processing in Social Anxiety Disorder.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is characterized by negative self-referential processing, which triggers excessive emotional reactivity. In healthy individuals, positive self-views typically predominate and are supported by regions of the default mode network (DMN) that represent self-related information and regions of the frontoparietal control network (FPCN) that contribute to metacognitive awareness and emotion regulation. The current study used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine patterns of DMN and FPCN activation during positive and negative self-referential judgments i

An integrative review of the limited evidence on international travel bans as an emerging infectious disease disaster control measure.

In our increasingly interconnected world, the potential for emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) to spread globally is of paramount concern. Travel bans-herein defined as the complete restriction of travel from at least one geographic region to at least one other international geographic region-are a potential policy solution to control the global spread of disease. The social, economic, and health-related consequences of travel bans, as well as the available evidence on the effectiveness of travel restrictions in preventing the global spread of influenza, have been previously described. Childhood leukemia and parental occupation. A register-based case-control study.

To explore possible etiologic factors of childhood leukemia, a case-control study was performed in the Netherlands. Cases were selected from a complete nationwide register of cases of childhood leukemia which were diagnosed between 1973 and 1980. Controls were matched with cases for year of birth, sex, and place of residence at the time of diagnosis. Information about possible exposures was collected by a postal questionnaire addressed to the parents. This report concerns the results of the analysis of parental occupations and occupational exposures for 519 children with acute lymphocytic leuk

Acute psychosis. Functional versus organic.

Acute psychosis is a true emergency and is a manifestation of multiple organic and functional disorders. The emergency medicine physician's role in dealing with the acutely psychotic patient is to control the patient's behavior, to delineate the etiology of the psychosis, and to provide appropriate initial treatment and disposition. When making initial contact with the psychotic patient, behavioral control can be accomplished through supportive, physical, or pharmacologic interventions. Judicious use of rapid tranquilization permits rapid control of these patients when supportive and other non

Beyond the Mosquito: Social Determinants of Health and Global Strategies for Aedes-Borne Disease Control.

BACKGROUND: Aedes-borne diseases, including dengue, chikungunya and Zika, have emerged as a growing global health concern, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. Their spread is not only driven by biological and environmental factors but also shaped by a wide range of social determinants of health (SDH). This systematic review synthesizes available evidence on SDH that shape the transmission, prevention and control of these diseases, as well as the strategies implemented internationally to address them. METHODS: We conducted five systematic reviews following PRISMA guidelines, each

Does pre-COVID impulsive behaviour predict adherence to hygiene and social distancing measures in youths following the COVID-19 pandemic onset? Evidence from a South African longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Engagement in protective behaviours relating to the COVID-19 pandemic has been proposed to be key to infection control. This is particularly the case for youths as key drivers of infections. A range of factors influencing adherence have been identified, including impulsivity and risk taking. We assessed the association between pre-COVID impulsivity levels and engagement in preventative measures during the COVID-19 pandemic in a longitudinal South African sample, in order to inform future pandemic planning. METHODS: Data were collected from N = 214 youths (mean age at baseline: M =

Quality of life in children with OCD with and without comorbidity.

BACKGROUND: Quality of life (QoL) is a well-established outcome measure. However, in contrast to adult obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), little is known about QoL in children with OCD. This study aimed to assess QoL, social competence and school functioning of paediatric patients with OCD by comparing them with the general population and assessing the relations between comorbidity, duration and severity of symptoms, family accommodation and QoL. METHODS: Children and adolescents (n = 135), aged 7-17 (mean 13 [SD 2.7] years; 48.1% female) were assessed at baseline for treatment. QoL was ass

Effects of risperidone and parent training on adaptive functioning in children with pervasive developmental disorders and serious behavioral problems.

OBJECTIVE: Children with Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDDs) have social interaction deficits, delayed communication, and repetitive behaviors as well as impairments in adaptive functioning. Many children actually show a decline in adaptive skills compared with age mates over time. METHOD: This 24-week, three-site, controlled clinical trial randomized 124 children (4 through 13 years of age) with PDDs and serious behavioral problems to medication alone (MED; n = 49; risperidone 0.5 to 3.5 mg/day; if ineffective, switch to aripiprazole was permitted) or a combination of medication plus pa

[Use of pension records for occupational health surveillance: example of record-linkage with hospital discharge records to study the association between work and the incidence of leukaemias, lung and bladder cancer, and miscarriage].

BACKGROUND: Epidemiologic surveillance of occupational health based on routinely collected data allows groups of workers to be studied, whose type of work (e.g. small enterprises, self-employed workers, artisans) makes it difficult to use a traditional cohort study design. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the validity of a study design based on the record-linkage between hospital discharge records and INPS social security records (National Institute for Social Security), in order to investigate the association between past employment in an economic sector and occurrence of diseases with a low fraction

Unpacking associations between trauma types and schizotypy dimensions in a community sample.

Interpersonal trauma (IT; intentionally harming another individual), is an established risk factor for psychosis-spectrum symptoms. However, few studies have investigated whether differential risk based on trauma type (IT versus non-IT) extends across major dimensions within schizotypy. Furthermore, it remains unclear whether increased risk associated with IT reflects the nature of the trauma or a 'dose' effect from accumulation of trauma, as IT occurs more often. Aiming to inform risk assessments, we employed a large community sample (N = 506) to address these gaps. A schizotypy measure disti

The effectiveness of information-motivation-behavioral skills (IMB)-based stress self-management health education on reducing stress among nursing students: a study protocol for a cluster-randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Nursing students frequently experience high levels of stress, which can impact their psychological, physiological, and social well-being. Stress among nursing students is closely associated with cognitive, motivational, and behavioral determinants. The information-motivation-behavioral skills (IMB) model provides a coherent framework for conceptualizing these determinants and promoting adaptive stress regulation. Based on this model, the present study will implement an IMB-based stress self-management health education program to mitigate stress among nursing students. METHODS: Thi

Neural and Kinematic Characteristics of Reaching in Autistic Children During Movement Observation, Execution, and Synchronization: An fNIRS Study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD, here on termed autistic children) exhibit motor difficulties in social and non-social contexts. Although previous studies have reported behavioral and neural characteristics, their relationship remains largely unexplored. The current study aimed to investigate the behavioral and neural mechanisms underlying interpersonal synchrony in autistic children using simultaneous kinematic and Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) recordings. METHODS: Fifty-eight autistic or non-autistic children participated (mean age = 10.1,

Correlates of Alcohol Use Severity among Black/African American Adolescents and Emerging Adults with Risky Drinking.

OBJECTIVE: Alcohol misuse reaches peak prevalence during adolescence and emerging adulthood increasing the risk for health harms, which is particularly concerning among Black/African American (AA) youth considering the health inequities these individuals experience. Also, disparities in alcohol-related negative social consequences (e.g., incarceration, unemployment) exist. Interventions for youth who engage in risky drinking need to be tailored to diverse needs to achieve better public health outcomes, health equity, and social justice. Herein, to inform future tailored interventions, we repor

Groups for belonging: a parallel cluster randomized controlled trial of a group-based loneliness intervention for people attending treatment for alcohol and other drug use.

BACKGROUND: People accessing alcohol and other drug (AOD) treatment experience high rates of loneliness, which is a strong driver of substance use. Groups for Belonging is a 6-session group-based intervention that combines elements of the social identity informed intervention Groups for Health with psychoeducation and strategies to help participants manage loneliness and overcome cognitive barriers to social connection. The project will examine the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of delivering Groups for Belonging within routine care offered by AOD treatment providers in Australia. METHO

Spillover of macro-level violence to parental physical abuse of children in low- and middle-income countries.

BACKGROUND: Through violence socialization processes, exposure to higher rates of violence in the macro context may spill over to family violence, including caregivers' use of physical child abuse. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the associations of violence occurring in macro contexts with parental physical abuse, after accounting for norms justifying women's exposure to intimate partner violence (IPV) and parental physical punishment against children. METHODS: We used data from 435,131 households with a reference child aged 1 to 17 years across 43 countries from rounds 4 and 5 of the UNICEF

Clinical and developmental characteristics of cognitive subgroups in a transdiagnostic sample of schizophrenia spectrum disorders and bipolar disorder.

Evidence suggests that neurocognitive dysfunction is a transdiagnostic feature of individuals across the continuum between schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. However, there is significant heterogeneity of neuropsychological and social-cognitive abilities in schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and bipolar disorder. The current study aimed to investigate the clinical and developmental characteristics of cognitive subgroups within the schizo-bipolar spectrum. 147 clinically stable patients with schizophrenia, schizoaffective or bipolar disorder were assessed using clinical rating scales for

Stage 2 registered report: investigating a preference for certainty in conversation among autistic adults.

Social communication difficulties are a diagnostic feature in autism. These difficulties are sometimes attributed, at least in part, to impaired ability in making inferences about what other people mean. In this registered report, we tested a competing hypothesis that the communication profile of adults on the autism spectrum can be more strongly characterised by reduced confidence in making inferences in the face of uncertain information. We tested this hypothesis by comparing the performance of 102 autistic and 109 non-autistic adults on a test of implied meaning, using a test of grammatical
