Developmental stuttering with common and complex phenotypes.

AIM: To describe the phenotypic spectrum associated with stuttering. METHOD: Individuals with current or resolved developmental stuttering self-referred. Surveys assessed stuttering characteristics (onset, negative impact, family history) and health (early development, other conditions). Speech and non-verbal intelligence were assessed using conversation and the Wechsler standardized scales. Sample sizes varied across assessments (n = 266-327). Latent class analysis identified unobserved groups based on assessment data. RESULTS: A total of 327 participants (231 male, 71%) with a median age o

Multiangle Correlation Feature Extraction and Disease Prediction Model Construction for Patients With Post-Stroke Dysarthria.

The clinical diagnosis and treatment of motor dysarthria in post-stroke patients is often subjective and neglects the impact of psychological and emotional disorders on disease progression. This study aims to analyze the correlation among emotional expression, psychological state, facial expression, and dysarthria disease severity and is dedicated to the construction of a dysarthria prediction model. We first designed THE-POSSD, a novel Chinese multimodal emotional pathology expression database, which collected acoustic, glottal, and facial data under emotional stimuli from patients at differe

Noise-induced cell death in the mouse medial geniculate body and primary auditory cortex.

Noise-induced effects within the inner ear have been well investigated for several years. However, this peripheral damage cannot fully explain the audiological symptoms in noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL), e.g. tinnitus, recruitment, reduced speech intelligibility, hyperacusis. There are few reports on central noise effects. Noise can induce an apoptosis of neuronal tissue within the lower auditory pathway. Higher auditory structures (e.g. medial geniculate body, auditory cortex) are characterized by metabolic changes after noise exposure. However, little is known about the microstructural ch…

Northern = smart and Southern = nice: the development of accent attitudes in the United States.

Adults evaluate others based on their speech, yet little is known of the developmental trajectory by which accent attitudes are acquired. Here we investigate the development of American children's attitudes about Northern- and Southern-accented American English. Children in Illinois (the "North") and Tennessee (the "South") evaluated the social desirability, personality characteristics, and geographic origins of Northern- and Southern-accented individuals. Five- to 6-year-old children in Illinois preferred the Northern-accented speakers as potential friends, yet did not demonstrate knowledge o

Hearing loss in children with otitis media with effusion: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: Otitis media with effusion (OME) is the presence of non-purulent inflammation in the middle ear. Hearing impairment is frequently associated with OME. Pure tone audiometry and speech audiometry are two of the most primarily utilised auditory assessments and provide valuable behavioural and functional estimation on hearing loss. This paper was designed to review and analyse the effects of the presence of OME on children's listening abilities. DESIGN: A systematic and descriptive review. STUDY SAMPLE: Twelve articles reporting frequency-specific pure tone thresholds and/or speech p

Designing a Speech-Based Decision Support Tool for Parkinson's Disease in Integrated Care.

Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative condition that requires timely intervention to manage symptoms and prevent deterioration. This study investigates the essential requirements for a speech-based decision support tool to monitor PD progression in a community-integrated care setting. While still at an early design stage, the envisioned tool may take the form of mobile or desktop software accessible to patients, carers, and professionals in home and clinical settings. A mixed-methods approach, including surveys (n=31), focus groups (n=12), interviews (n=11), and policy do

Dyslexia risk gene relates to representation of sound in the auditory brainstem.

Dyslexia is a reading disorder with strong associations with KIAA0319 and DCDC2. Both genes play a functional role in spike time precision of neurons. Strikingly, poor readers show an imprecise encoding of fast transients of speech in the auditory brainstem. Whether dyslexia risk genes are related to the quality of sound encoding in the auditory brainstem remains to be investigated. Here, we quantified the response consistency of speech-evoked brainstem responses to the acoustically presented syllable [da] in 159 genotyped, literate and preliterate children. When controlling for age, sex, fami

[Significance of auditory processing deficits for the pathogenesis of reading and spelling disorders].

OBJECTIVE: It has been claimed that children with dyslexia show auditory processing deficits and a training of auditory perception is recommended as a therapy. this study addresses the question whether a causal connection between auditory perception and dyslexia can be proven empirically. METHOD: 27 dyslexic children with average intelligence and normal hearing and 31 controls were examined. The auditory perception ability was judged with non-linguistic (pitch, tone duration, sound discrimination tasks) and verbal (speech in noise, compressed speech) tasks. In addition auditory short-term mem
