D-glucaric acid excretion in critical care patients--comparison with 6 beta-hydroxycortisol excretion and serum gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase activity and relation to multiple drug therapy.

The incidence of increased drug metabolism activity as a consequence of multiple drug therapy at a surgical intensive care ward has been studied non-invasively by determinations of daily urinary D-glucaric acid (GA) excretion rates. Among 165 randomly selected patients, GA excretion was stimulated in 76 cases (= 46%). Exploratory data analysis showed that increases in GA excretion are primarily due to administration of barbiturates (pentobarbitone, Nembutal), miconazole (Daktar) and, to a lesser extent, neuroleptics. Surprisingly, the large number of simultaneously administered additional drug

Metabolic investigations after xylitol infusion in human subjects.

Evidence has been sought for minor degrees of thiamin and pyridoxine deficiency in patients undergoing surgery who have been infused with xylitol as a parenteral nutrient. Some metabolic changes which are associated with this practice have been studied; the findings are compared with those obtained in similar patients infused with glucose solutions. The thiamin status of all of the subjects was normal. Some of the patients showed slight biochemical evidence of pyridoxine deficiency, but there were no untoward effects of xylitol infusion. The concentration of oxalate in the blood and the excret

Coordinated attenuation of oxidative stress metabolism and alterations of root exudates in maize (Zea mays L.) induced by Streptomyces rhizobacteria.

Interactions between plants and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are critically important for the healthy development of plants. Several Streptomyces species stand out as PGPR and biological control agents. This study evaluated the effects of the interaction between maize plants and four Streptomyces strains on oxidative stress metabolism and root exudate profiles. Plants treated with strains CLV16, CLV95, CLV104, and CLV179 showed a marked reduction in antioxidant enzyme activities. In shoots, ascorbate peroxidase activity decreased by up to 99% at 15 days compared to control, whil

Effects of Starter Concentration and Fermentation Time on Microbiological, Physicochemical, Nutritional, and Sensory Properties of Young Coconut Drink-Based Yogurt.

The development of plant-based yogurt alternatives continues to expand in response to lactose intolerance, sustainability concerns, and demand for nondairy fermented products. Young coconut drink, derived from a mixture of coconut water and young coconut flesh, has been reported to contain fermentable sugars, minerals, and bioactive compounds that support microbial growth, suggesting its potential as a fermentation substrate. However, its fermentation characteristics remain underexplored. This study evaluated the effects of starter culture concentration (0.8% and 1%) and fermentation time (8 a

Effect of acid washing and torrefaction combined pretreatment on the properties of waste tobacco stem biomass and the quality of pyrolysis bio-oil.

Aiming at the issues of low yield and poor quality of bio-oil obtained from direct pyrolysis of biomass, in this study, waste tobacco stems (TS) were used as raw materials, and the pretreatment methods of torrefaction and acid washing were adopted to study the effects of different torrefaction temperatures and pretreatment sequences on the quality of TS biomass and bio-oil. Results showed that combined pretreatment synergistically integrated deoxygenation from torrefaction and deashing from acid washing. High-temperature torrefaction-based combined pretreatment reduced TS oxygen content from 5

In vitro fermentability and physicochemical properties of fibre substrates and their effect on bacteriological and morphological characteristics of the gastrointestinal tract of newly weaned piglets.

Fermentability of fibre has a great impact on the bacterial flora along the gastrointestinal tract of newly weaned piglets. Therefore, this parameter was determined by incubating in vitro different fibre substrates (chicory roots, sugar beet pulp, wheat bran and corn cobs) with contents of jejunum or caecum sampled from slaughtered pigs. Incubating with small intestinal contents, lactic acid was the only fermentation product. Fermentability was highest for chicory roots, followed by wheat bran and sugar beet pulp, while corn cobs were not fermented. Based on SCFA formed in the incubations with

Tunable and Efficient CO2 Delivery Supports Robust Malic Acid Production by Escherichia coli in a Hollow Fiber Membrane Bioreactor.

Malic acid, a four-carbon dicarboxylic acid, represents a top value-added chemical from biomass and important building-block molecule for various industrial chemical processes. Currently, however, it is primarily produced from petrochemicals via an unsustainable process with high greenhouse gas intensity. Alternatively, malic acid can be produced from renewable biomass sugars via anaerobic fermentation by engineered Escherichia coli. While inorganic carbon (Ci) serves as an essential co-substrate in this carbon-negative process, its typical delivery methods suffer from several key limitations.

Evaluating the effects of azelaic acid in the metabolism of Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings through untargeted metabolomics and ionomics approaches.

The present study demonstrates that low concentrations of azelaic acid (AZA) significantly impact the metabolism of Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings, leading to imbalances in numerous minerals and metabolites due to AZA-induced stress. Untargeted metabolomic analyses were conducted on untreated and AZA-treated seedlings at two time points: 7 and 14 days after treatment initiation. The results revealed a general accumulation of sugars (e.g., glucose, mannose, xylose), amino acids (e.g., lysine, GABA, threonine, glutamine), and organic acids (e.g., glutaric acid, shikimic acid, succinic acid) in A

Evaluating the potential of natural product combinations with sorbic acid for improving preservative action against food-spoilage yeasts.

Fungal control methods commonly involve the use of antifungals or preservatives, which can raise concerns about broader effects of these stressors on non-target organisms, spread of resistance and regulatory hurdles. Consequently, control methods enabling lower usage of such stressors are highly sought, for example chemical combinations that synergistically inhibit target-organisms. Here, we investigated how well such a principle extends to improving efficacy of an existing but tightly controlled food preservative, sorbic acid. A screen of ∼200 natural products for synergistic fungal inhibitio

Changes in phenolic compounds production as a defensive mechanism against hydrogen sulfide pollution in Scrophularia striata.

Increasing pollutants such as hydrogen sulfide (H2S) from industrial activities is an ecological challenge for plants, which seriously affects their health and productivity. Scrophularia striata is a plant endemic to Iran growing in the province of Ilam, wherein a gas refinery releases toxic agents such as H2S whose detrimental effects on the function and tolerability of medicinal plants in this region have yet to be elucidated. Thus, we initiated a hydroponic study into hormetic effect of sodium hydrogen sulfide (NaHS) concentrations (0, 3 and 7 mM) as H2S-donor at different time points on ox

Improving Regulation of Enzymatic and Non-Enzymatic Antioxidants and Stress-Related Gene Stimulation in Cucumber mosaic cucumovirus-Infected Cucumber Plants Treated with Glycine Betaine, Chitosan and Combination.

Cucumber mosaic cucumovirus (CMV) is a deadly plant virus that results in crop-yield losses with serious economic consequences. In recent years, environmentally friendly components have been developed to manage crop diseases as alternatives to chemical pesticides, including the use of natural compounds such as glycine betaine (GB) and chitosan (CHT), either alone or in combination. In the present study, the leaves of the cucumber plants were foliar-sprayed with GB and CHT-either alone or in combination-to evaluate their ability to induce resistance against CMV. The results showed a significant

Amino Acid Dysregulation in the Mother-Fetus Unit: Multi-Compartment Metabolomic Signatures of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus and Fetal Macrosomia.

The role of amino acid disturbances in the mother-fetus system remains poorly understood, despite their critical involvement in gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), fetal macrosomia (FM) and offspring metabolic programming. This study included 62 mother-newborn dyads stratified by GDM and FM status. An analysis of the association of amino acids with clinical parameters was performed using the Spearman test. Amino acid markers of GDM were identified using the mutual information index and the Mann-Whitney test. A random forest method was used to identify amino acid markers, with the SHAP value u
