Fluoroscopically guided wide-bore thoracostomy tube placement: Description of the technique and comparison to blind placement.

OBJECTIVE: To describe and compare fluoroscopic guidance for placement of wide-bore thoracostomy tubes (FGTT) to traditional, blind placement of thoracostomy tubes (BPTT). STUDY DESIGN: Prospective clinical trial. ANIMALS: Twenty client-owned dogs. METHODS: Dogs requiring medical management of pleural effusion received a BPTT, whereas dogs undergoing postoperative management of pneumothorax and/or pleural fluid after lateral thoracotomy received an FGTT. Time of placement, accuracy of positioning, radiation exposure, and complications were compared between groups. RESULTS: Initial placemen

Influence of 2 Veress needles and 4 insertion sites on Veress needle penetration depth: A comparative study in cadaveric dogs.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the penetration depth (VNPD) of 2 disposable Veress needles (VN) at 4 insertion sites in the abdomen. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive study. SAMPLE POPULATION: Canine cadavers (n = 22, 6 for confirmation of the test methods and 16 for the comparative study). METHODS: Two disposable VN (VN A and VN B) were inserted at 4 sites (9th intercostal space [ICS] and preumbilical, paraumbilical, and subumbilical sites) in dorsally recumbent dogs by using a hand-cranked jig. The VNPD was measured as the distance traveled by the VN between the subcutaneous tissue and the perforation of

Laryngeal mask airway and transient hypercapnic hyperpnea for video-endoscopic assessment of unilateral laryngeal paralysis in dogs.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the ability to assess laryngeal function and to diagnose unilateral laryngeal paralysis (uLP) via airway endoscopy and carbon dioxide (CO2 ) stimulation. STUDY DESIGN: Experimental study. ANIMALS: Six healthy, adult beagles. METHODS: Dogs were anesthetized with sevoflurane and dexmedetomidine. Laryngeal activity was observed via endoscopy placed through a laryngeal mask airway (LMA). The absolute and normalized glottic gap areas (AGGA and NGGA, respectively) and the glottic length (GL) were measured at inspiration and before and after surgically induced uLP. Measureme
