Comparison of achilles tendon loading between male and female recreational runners.

Recreational running is an activity with multiple reported health benefits for both sexes, however, chronic injuries caused by excessive and/or repetitive loading of the Achilles tendon are common. Males have been identified as being at an increased risk of suffering an injury to the Achilles tendon and as such, knowledge of differences in loading between the sexes may provide further information to better understand why this is the case. The aim of the current investigation was to determine whether gender differences in the Achilles tendon load exist in recreational runners. Fifteen male (age

Functionally distinct tendon fascicles exhibit different creep and stress relaxation behaviour.

Most overuse tendinopathies are thought to be associated with repeated microstrain below the failure threshold, analogous to the fatigue failure that affects materials placed under repetitive loading. Investigating the progression of fatigue damage within tendons is therefore of critical importance. There are obvious challenges associated with the sourcing of human tendon samples for in vitro analysis so animal models are regularly adopted. However, data indicates that fatigue life varies significantly between tendons of different species and with different stresses in life. Positional tendons

Effect of elbow position on canine flexor digitorum profundus tendon tension.

Tendon injury in the finger remains a clinical challenge to hand surgeons. A canine model is commonly used to study biological effects of tendon injuries and their treatment. There is an important anatomical difference between human and canine anatomy that may be overlooked, however, namely that most of the flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) muscle in dogs takes its origin from the medial epicondyle of the humerus, whereas in humans this muscle arises purely from the forearm. Therefore, elbow position can affect the tension of this muscle in dogs, while having no effect in humans. The purpose of…

Tendon adhesion after percutaneous repair of the Achilles tendon: a case report.

Percutaneous repair of the Achilles tendon is known to minimize tendon adhesions and wound complication through a minimally invasive technique. The usually reported complications are sural nerve injury and inadequate contact of the tendon stumps, which can lead to rerupture or tendon lengthening. We experienced an interesting case of Achilles tendon adhesion after percutaneous repair, which had been initially misdiagnosed as a rerupture. To our knowledge, this is the only report of Achilles tendon adhesion as a complication after percutaneous repair, which stresses the importance of functional

Fascicles and the interfascicular matrix show adaptation for fatigue resistance in energy storing tendons.

UNLABELLED: Tendon is composed of rope-like fascicles, bound together by interfascicular matrix (IFM). Our previous work shows that the IFM is critical for tendon function, facilitating sliding between fascicles to allow tendons to stretch. This function is particularly important in energy storing tendons, which experience extremely high strains during exercise, and therefore require the capacity for considerable inter-fascicular sliding and recoil. This capacity is not required in positional tendons. Whilst we have previously described the quasi-static properties of the IFM, the fatigue resis

Posteromedial Corner Injuries of the Knee: Imaging Findings.

The posteromedial corner (PMC) of the knee is an anatomical region formed by ligamentous structures (medial collateral ligament, posterior oblique ligament, oblique popliteal ligament), the semimembranosus tendon and its expansions, the posteromedial joint capsule, and the posterior horn of the medial meniscus. Injuries to the structures of the PMC frequently occur in acute knee trauma in association with other ligamentous or meniscal tears. The correct assessment of PMC injuries is crucial because the deficiency of these supporting structures can lead to anteromedial rotation instability or t

Management of Posttraumatic Pseudotelecanthus.

Injuries to the nose and perinasal region are common. Though the nasal fractures are commonly recognized and properly addressed, injuries to adjacent structures such as the orbit, medial canthus, and midface skeleton can be missed or misdiagnosed leading to improper primary treatment and subsequent secondary deformities. In this discussion, we focus on secondary deformities of the medial canthal region injuries that result from inadequate primary repair of the displaced medial canthal tendon apparatus in naso-orbital-ethmoid fractures. Emphasis is placed on the difference in complexity of the

Wrist injuries: a comparison between high- and low-impact sports.

Wrist injuries can be categorized as those caused by high- or low-impact sports. High-impact sports include auto racing, motorcross or bicycle racing, in-line skating, gymnastics, football, soccer, ice skating, snowboarding, and alpine skiing. Low-impact sports include tennis, track and field, and golf. High-impact injuries of the wrist range from displaced fractures and dislocations to ligamentous and acute tendinous tears. Low-impact sports typically result in nondisplaced or occult fractures, contusions, stress reaction, ligamentous sprain, tendinopathy, tenosynovitis, or tendon subluxation

[Catalog of direct eye muscle injuries].

Eye muscle injuries may occur in isolation or concomitantly with orbital fractures. Depending on their mechanical cause they may be encountered in the form of contusions, overextensions or injuries caused by stabbing or cutting. The authors present case histories from their own patient collective in this order, supplemented by a number of cases described in the literature. Particular attention is paid to the superior oblique, injuries to which are almost without exception trochlear or pretrochlear. The special anatomy of the tendon is a factor that may explain restrictions in motility in upwar

Hybrid Achilles tendon repair with gastrocnemius fascia turn-down flap for fracture of ossified Achilles tendon.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Fractures of ossified Achilles tendons are rare and often associated with repetitive jumping and sprinting in young athletes. Although the exact cause of Achilles tendon ossification is unclear, prior trauma and surgery are common contributing factors. CASE PRESENTATION: A 47-year-old male recreational athlete experienced acute pain in his right heel after a football game. Imaging revealed two calcified fragments within the Achilles tendon (proximal: 3.0 × 1.0 × 1.0 cm; distal: 1.5 × 1.0 × 0.5 cm) and a 2.7 cm tendon gap. Surgical debridement and repair were perfo

Successful Surgical Repair of Acute Quadriceps Tendon Rupture Utilizing Cortical Button Fixation: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Timely diagnosis and surgical treatment are often needed to restore function of the extensor mechanism after rupture of the quadriceps tendon. Several techniques for quadriceps tendon repair have been reported, including suture anchors and bone tunnels. Cortical button fixation, or the use of an adjustable cortical fixation device, is a local and biomechanically strong internal brace technique used to treat ligament and tendon injuries. This report is of a 69-year-old man who experienced a quadriceps tendon rupture while golfing and underwent a successful surgical repair using corti…

Simultaneous acute rotator cuff tear and distal biceps rupture in a strongman competitor.

Acute rotator cuff tear is commonly associated with tearing of the proximal biceps tendon, but has never been reported to occur simultaneously with a distal biceps tendon rupture. A 38-year-old right-hand-dominant strongman competitor attempted a 300-pound overhead axle press and experienced immediate pain in the right shoulder and elbow. He had no known systemic risk factors for tendon ruptures including hyperparathyroidism, hemodialysis, alcoholism, rheumatoid arthritis, statin medications, fluoroquinolones, and steroid use.Right shoulder magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a full-thickn

Flexor Pollicis Longus Reconstruction After Rupture Following Distal Radius Fixation With Volar Locking Plate: A Technique Guide.

Flexor pollicis longus rupture is an uncommon but potentially debilitating complication after volar locking plate fixation of distal radius fractures, occurring secondary to tendon attrition against the implant. This nature of tendon injury typically precludes primary repair. This paper will illustrate 2 reconstruction techniques, an interpositional tendon graft and a tendon transfer, that have been utilized successfully by the authors.

Repair of Pronator Quadratus With Partial Muscle Split and Distal Transfer for Volar Plating of Distal Radius Fractures.

Flexor tendon injury is a rare, but serious, complication after volar plate fixation for distal radius fractures. The plate position and prominence at the watershed line are contributing factors that cause flexor tendon injury. With the standard volar approach, the pronator quadratus (PQ) is typically elevated off the radial attachment. The distal part of the plate is often visible after repair of the PQ. We describe a "PQ-splitting" technique for covering the distal edge of the plate if primary PQ repair cannot completely cover the distal part of the plate. We also report the outcome of our s

Laceration of tibialis anterior tendon complicating a closed tibial fracture: a case report.

Traumatic laceration of the tibialis anterior tendon complicating a closed tibial shaft fracture is a rare injury pattern. Only 3 such cases have been reported to date in the English literature and all were missed on initial examination. A case of a 17-year-old motorcyclist with an acute laceration of the tibialis anterior tendon resulting from a closed oblique tibial shaft fracture is presented. The tendon laceration was suspected preoperatively because of the patient's inability to actively dorsiflex his ankle joint and the existence of a palpable gap in the soft tissues over the anterolater
