Feline dental disease.

Periodontal disease and chronic gingivitis/stomatitis are the most common feline dental diseases. With routine dental care and increased emphasis on home oral hygiene, these diseases can be controlled. Cats can be seen with a number of other dental disorders, and improved treatment methods such as restorations of early subgingival resorptive lesions, endodontic therapy, and orthodontic therapy can be performed successfully. More study and research are necessary about the gingivitis/stomatitis syndrome and subgingival resorptive lesions so that improved prevention and treatment recommendations

A review of forensic analysis of dental and maxillofacial skeletal trauma.

Dental and maxillofacial trauma analysis in the forensic context, includes assessment of both living and deceased persons. It is required in all cases where human abuse is suspected and where signs of skeletal trauma are detected in human remains. Skeletal trauma refers to the damage inflicted to bone, teeth and other hard tissues. An accurate analysis of the dental and maxillofacial trauma is achieved by the assessment of the remains by forensic pathologists, anthropologists and odontologists. This paper aims to review dental and maxillofacial skeletal trauma in the scope of forensic science.

Is it necessary to remove bone-impacted teeth? A retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: In clinical practice, it is risky to extract bone-impacted teeth and they're prone to a variety of complications, such as pathological fracture, adjacent tooth fracture, maxillary sinus perforation, and so on, making it difficult for clinicians to decide whether to extract them. PURPOSE: In order to illustrate our opinions on the possibility of extracting full third molars (M3), 360 examples of complete third molars were analyzed in this study. MATERIALS AND METHOD: We investigated 2189 patients, and 261 of them provided CBCT images of 360 teeth. assessing the degree of second mo

Diagnosis of osteoporosis in dental patients.

Osteoporosis is a severe skeletal disease that leads to bone fractures, even disability, if it remains undetected. However, osteoporosis remains frequently unnoticed until a fracture occurs. It is possible for dental practitioners to screen patients at risk of osteoporosis and refer them for an osteoporosis evaluation. Screening can be achieved mainly through dental radiographs and especially panoramic x-rays, where several radiographic indices, such as Mandibular Cortical Width (MCW), Mandibular Cortical Index (MCI), Gonial Index (GI), Antigonial Index (AI), Panoramic Mandibular Index (PMI) a

Summers' technique modification for sinus floor elevation using a connective tissue graft. A case report.

The sinus floor elevation technique with Summers' osteotome is simpler and less invasive than access through the lateral wall of the sinus; however, it is susceptible to a higher level of sinusal membrane rupture. The objective of the present study was to display a modification of the osteotomy technique by connective tissue interposition in order to weaken the impact of sinus cortical fracture, and therefore prevent perforations in the sinusal membrane. A case is reported in which a patient presented with an absent tooth #4 for osseointegrated implant rehabilitation. Maxillary sinus elevation

Biometric analysis of furcation area of molar teeth and its relationship with instrumentation.

The anatomy of furcation favours the bacterial retention and makes periodontal debridement as well as oral hygiene procedures difficult. Teeth that have lost attachment to a level of the furcation are said to have a furcal invasion or furcation involved.Involvement of furcation in a multi-rooted tooth poses a very different type of clinical situation in terms of establishment of diagnosis, determination of prognosis and of course planning the treatment modality. The present study was carried out on 200 selected extracted human first and second permanent molar teeth based on a predefined criteri

Minimizing MRONJ after Tooth Extraction in Cancer Patients Receiving Bone-Modifying Agents.

BACKGROUND: Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ) is a mucosal lesion of the maxillofacial region with necrotic bone exposure. MRONJ is believed to be multifactorial. Tooth extraction is debatably a risk factor for MRONJ. The targets of the present study were to examine MRONJ occurrence in patients using bone modifying agents (BMAs) for oncology indications and undergoing a dental extraction, and to assess whether suspected predisposing factors can predict MRONJ. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective, cohort study included all patients fitting the inclusion criteria and a l

Combined effect of anterior malocclusion and inadequate lip coverage on dental trauma in primary teeth.

OBJECTIVES: The main objective of this study was to investigate whether the interaction of malocclusion (open bite or increased overjet) combined with inadequate lip coverage strengthens its association with traumatic dental injury (TDI) in the primary teeth of preschool children compared to the presence of malocclusion alone. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 376 children aged 36-59 months who attended the National Day of Children's Vaccination. Presence of TDI, tooth discoloration, and sinus tract were evaluated in the children. Variables associated with occl

The in vitro effect of pH on osteoclasts and bone resorption in the cat: implications for the pathogenesis of FORL.

Dental disease due to osteoclast over-activity reaches epidemic proportions in older domestic cats and has also been reported in wild cats. Feline osteoclastic resorptive lesions (FORL) involve extensive resorption of the tooth leaving it liable to root fracture and subsequent tooth loss. The aetio-pathogenesis of FORL is not known. Recent work has shown that systemic acidosis causes increased osteoclast activation and that loci of infection or inflammation in cat mouth are likely to be acidotic. To investigate this, we generated osteoclasts from cat blood and found that they formed in large n

Single tooth replacement by Morse taper connection implants: a retrospective study of 80 implants.

The goal of this study was to provide data relative to the use of a new implant system (Mac System, Cabon, Milan, Italy) with a Morse taper implant-abutment connection for single implant restorations. The implant system is composed of an endosseous screw made of commercially pure titanium grade 2, while the abutment is titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V). A total of 80 single implants were placed in 69 patients (36 women and 33 men, mean age 42 years, range 16 to 61). All patients gave their informed consent and received a thorough clinical and radiographic examination. Smokers and diabetics were exclu

Diagnostic Performance of Iterative Reconstruction of Cone-beam Computed Tomography for Detecting Vertical Root Fractures in the Presence of Metal Artifacts.

INTRODUCTION: Vertical root fractures (VRFs) are challenging to detect, especially in endodontically treated teeth. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) has improved VRF detection over periapical radiography but is limited by metal artifacts. Iterative Reconstruction (IR) algorithms are an alternative to the traditional Filtered-Back Projection (FBP) and have been shown to reduce image noise due to metal artifacts. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of IR on VRF detection in the presence of metal artifacts from intracanal materials and/or adjacent implants. METHODS: This ex-vivo study in
