Specific profiles of neurocognitive and reading functions in a sample of 42 Italian boys with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

A group of 42 Italian boys with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy was compared with a control group of 10 boys with Spinal Muscular Atrophy and Osteogenesis Imperfecta on tests assessing general intellectual ability, language, neuropsychological functions, and reading skills with the aim of describing a comprehensive profile of the various functions and investigating their interrelationships. The influence of general intellectual level on performance was analyzed. Further, correlations between various neuropsychological measures and language performances were computed for the group with Duchenne Mus

Tourette's syndrome (TS): inhibitory performance in adults with uncomplicated TS.

Tourette's syndrome (TS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder linked with frontostriatal dysfunction. Previous work has shown some evidence of mild performance deficits on a range of different tasks that involve inhibitory processes. The present study evaluated this in adult participants with uncomplicated TS. Interference control was measured using the Stroop and flanker tasks and a Stroop-flanker task that combined the inhibitory demands of both. Motor inhibition was measured using a letter continuous performance test (CPT) task and word CPT tasks that manipulated the inhibitory demands using co

Proofreading using an assistive software homophone tool: compensatory and remedial effects on the literacy skills of students with reading difficulties.

The present study investigated the effects of using an assistive software homophone tool on the assisted proofreading performance and unassisted basic skills of secondary-level students with reading difficulties. Students aged 13 to 15 years proofread passages for homophonic errors under three conditions: with the homophone tool, with homophones highlighted only, or with no help. The group using the homophone tool significantly outperformed the other two groups on assisted proofreading and outperformed the others on unassisted spelling, although not significantly. Remedial (unassisted) improve

Correlations between reading, phonological awareness and auditory temporal processing.

BACKGROUND: Auditory temporal processing and reading. AIM: To analyse the potential correlations between reading acquisition, phonological awareness, and auditory temporal processing in Brazilian children with dyslexia. METHOD: This study evaluated sixty children, nine to twelve years of age, divided into two groups: a control group of twenty seven children without dyslexia and a study group of thirty three children with dyslexia. The children in both groups were submitted to tests designed to assess reading skills, phonological awareness, and auditory temporal processing. RESULTS: In the r

Second language learning difficulties in Chinese children with dyslexia: what are the reading-related cognitive skills that contribute to English and Chinese word reading?

This study examined the relations between reading-related cognitive skills and word reading development of Chinese children with dyslexia in their Chinese language (L1) and in English (L2). A total of 84 bilingual children-28 with dyslexia, 28 chronological age (CA) controls, and 28 reading-level (RL) controls-participated and were administered measures of word reading, rapid naming, visual-orthographic skills, and phonological and morphological awareness in both L1 and L2. Children with dyslexia showed weaker performance than CA controls in both languages and had more difficulties in phonolog

High cognitive function of an ALS patient in the totally locked-in state.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a motor neuron disease characterized by progressive degeneration of upper and lower motor neurons. Patients with ALS progressively lose their ability to control voluntary movements and occasionally enter the totally locked-in state (TLS), in which they cannot move any part of their bodies including the eyes. In this study, we clarified the preserved abilities and reorganization of the motor system of a 73-year-old patient with ALS in the TLS using optical topography, a recently developed extension of near-infrared spectroscopy. The patient performed four

Cognitive profile in young Icelandic children with cerebral palsy.

We describe the cognitive profile in a complete national cohort of children with cerebral palsy (CP). One hundred and twenty-seven Icelandic children (67 females, 60 males) with CP, born between 1985 and 2000 and assessed between the ages of 4 and 6 years 6 months (mean age 5y 5mo, SD 6mo), were included in the study. IQ was measured using the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence (WPPSI) and developmental quotient (DQ) was obtained using various developmental scales. Physiological classification of CP in the children was: spasticity, n=104 (82%); dyskinesia, n=14 (11%); ataxia,

Predicting generalization in the training of irregular-word spelling: treating lexical spelling deficits in a child.

This paper presents a single case study investigating the mechanisms underlying generalization of treatment benefits to untrained words in spelling. Brunsdon, Coltheart, and Nickels (2005) observed that untreated words that improved tended to be those whose errors were closest to being correct prior to treatment. These words also tended to be high in written frequency. The present study employed the same treatment techniques as those used by Brunsdon et al. with K.M., a developmental surface dysgraphic. During a first treatment the characteristics of words whose spelling improved without speci

Factors affecting vocabulary acquisition at age 2 in children born between 23 and 28 weeks' gestation.

Language development is often slower in preterm children compared with their term peers. We investigated factors associated with vocabulary acquisition at 2 years in a cohort of children born at 28 weeks' gestation or less. For children entered into the United Kingdom Oscillation Study, language development was evaluated by using the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventories score, completed by parents as part of a developmental questionnaire. The effect of demographic, neonatal, socioeconomic factors, growth, and disability were investigated using multifactorial random effects mod

Processing of derived forms in high-functioning dyslexics.

We report on an experiment designed to evaluate processing of derived forms in high-functioning dyslexics, defined as university students with a history of reading difficulties who have age-appropriate reading comprehension skills. We compared high-functioning dyslexics with a group of normal adult readers in their performance on a lexical decision task with derived items (such as cloudy and ably) and pseudo-derived items (such as belly and gravy). Some items contained an orthographic change (such as able-ably and gravy) and others did not (such as cloud - cloudy). The results indicated that a

[Phonological and orthographic processes of reading and spelling in young adolescents and adults with and without dyslexia in German and English: impact on foreign language learning].

BACKGROUND: Diethyl sulfate (DES) is a substance classified to the group of carcinogens. The value of maximum admissible concentration for this substance in workplace air is not specified in Poland. Due to the use of DES in domestic companies there is a need to develop a sensitive method for the determination of diethyl sulfate in the work environment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Studies were performed using gas chromatography (GC) technique. An Agilent Technologies chromatograph, series 7890A, with a mass selective detector (5975C, Agilent Technologies, USA) was used in the experiment. Separation

Working memory in mild Alzheimer's disease and early Parkinson's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD) impair working memory (WM). It is unclear, however, whether the deficits seen early in the course of these diseases are similar. To address this issue, the authors compared the performance of 22 patients with mild AD, 20 patients with early PD and without dementia, and 112 control participants on tests of inhibition, short-term memory, and 2 commonly administered tests of WM. The results suggest that although mild AD and early PD both impair WM, the deficits may be related to the interruption of different processes that contribute to WM per

Working memory deficit as a core neuropsychological dysfunction in schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE: This study tested the hypothesis that impaired working memory is a core deficit underlying multiple neuropsychological deficits in schizophrenia patients. METHOD: The subjects were 27 men with stable chronic schizophrenia treated with atypical antipsychotics and 38 normal participants. They were assessed with a battery of neuropsychological tests. Verbal working memory was measured with the WAIS digit span tests, and the Dot Test was used to test spatial working memory. RESULTS: In the patients, verbal working memory showed significant correlations with visual retention, visual or

H.M., word knowledge, and aging: support for a new theory of long-term retrograde amnesia.

This study develops a new theory of long-term retrograde amnesia that encompasses episodic and semantic memory, including word knowledge. Under the theory, retrograde amnesia in both normal individuals and hippocampal amnesics reflects transmission deficits caused by aging, nonrecent use of connections, and infrequent use of connections over the life span. However, transmission deficits cause severe and irreversible retrograde amnesia only in amnesics who (unlike normal persons) cannot readily form new connections to replace nonfunctioning ones. The results of this study are consistent with th

A strategy for screening memory functions in individuals with mental retardation.

In an attempt to develop a protocol for evaluating mentally retarded clients from a neurobehavioral perspective, a strategy for screening complex verbal, simple verbal, simple visual, and spatial working memory was developed. This strategy results in numeric values on each of the aspects of memory, and it can contribute to a "global index" of memory function. The strategy is described so that it might be adopted by other practitioners interested in screening their client's ability to store and retrieve newly acquired information. Descriptive data for 125 persons carrying diagnoses of mild, mod

Pure anomia with spared action naming due to a left temporal lesion.

We report the case of a patient who, after surgical ablation of an angioma in the depth of the left temporal lobe, developed a highly selective impairment of naming. A detailed investigation allowed to exclude a disorder of visual recognition or of semantic memory, and indicated the output lexicon as the most probable site of impairment. Grammatical class effects, with superior action naming, and a high consistency within and across output modalities further characterized the patient's performance. Together with some other recently reported cases, this patient suggests a correlation between te

Effects of community-based, videotape, and flash card instruction of community-referenced sight words on students with mental retardation.

Community-referenced sight words and phrases were taught to adolescents with mild and moderate mental retardation using three instructional methods in two locations. Words were presented on flash cards in a school setting, on videotape recordings in a school setting, and on naturally occurring signs in the community. During each session, participants were taught one third of the words in each of these conditions and were then tested at the community sites. A constant prompt delay procedure was used to promote stimulus control to the experimenter's cue initially and then to transfer control to

A comparison of the effects of lorazepam with those of propranolol on experimentally-induced anxiety and performance.

In a double-blind cross-over study the effects of propranolol (80 mg) and of lorazepam (1 or 2.5 mg) were assessed in normal student volunteers using a number of performance tests and mood-rating and bodily symptom questionnaires. Drug effects on experimentally-induced anxiety were also studied. The high dose of lorazepam impaired performance in digit-symbol substitution, symbol copying and verbal learning tests, and increased subjects' ratings of dizziness. Both lorazepam and propranolol increased simple reaction time. Lorazepam but not propranolol increased ratings of sedation. Although the …

How "flat' are normal ability profiles in 4-year-olds?

Group and individual ability profiles of 89 English 4-year-olds on the McCarthy scales of children's abilities (MSCA) are presented. The results suggest that at this age, there is a high expectation of obtaining at least one significant difference between a child's mean ability score and the individual ability of index scores. The direction of these significant differences in ability suggested that, in this age group, abilities measured by the MSCA verbal and perceptual performance indexes tend to be more advanced than abilities measured by the quantitative and memory indexes.
