Laryngeal behavior in unilateral superior laryngeal nerve (SLN) paralysis was investigated in animal models and clinical cases. The occurrence of an oblique glottis caused by rotation of the posterior glottis to the paralytic side was the main focus of this study. The animal model study employed live dogs. When the SLN on one side was sectioned, spontaneous phonation did not cause a significantly oblique glottis. When the unaffected SLN was electrically stimulated during spontaneous phonation, an oblique glottis occurred. When the SLN was unilaterally stimulated during spontaneous phonation wi

Upper airway pressure was measured during maximal exercise in 10 Thoroughbred racehorses with naturally occurring upper airway obstruction. Left laryngeal hemiplegia and arytenoid chondropathy resulted in substantial increases (30-40 cm H2O) in inspiratory upper airway pressure (Pl), whereas complicated aryepiglottic entrapment and subepiglottic cysts produced only modest increases (15 cm H2O) in Pl. Uncomplicated aryepiglottic entrapment and grade IV pharyngeal lymphoid hyperplasia produced only slight increases (3-5 cm H2O). In general, surgical procedures restored airway pressures to within

Experimental reinnervation of the equine larynx in healthy ponies was studied after the recurrent laryngeal nerve was crushed, using endoscopic, electromyographic, and microscopic techniques. In 12 ponies, the recurrent laryngeal nerve was crushed unilaterally in the midcervical area. All showed postoperative paralysis of the larynx on the operated side. In 8 ponies, recovery of movement of the vocal folds occurred at different times (2.5 to 8 months) after surgical operation was done. These movements, which were often abnormal, included trembling and asynchronism. In 2 of these ponies, comple

Surgery for unilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis, which is caused by thyroid cancer, appearing within the past six months, should be aimed at improvement of the asymmetrical vocal cord and preservation of the stiffness and the mass of the vocal fold. To accomplish these aims, reconstructive surgery of the neuromuscular systems is available and it should be performed at the same time as thyroidectomy. Our surgical procedures for unilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis caused by thyroid cancer are reported along with some experimental investigations in dogs. Experimentally, musc

The CO2 surgical laser was found to be a useful tool for the performance of endoscopic arytenoidectomy for bilateral vocal cord paralysis. The dog was found to be a less-than-perfect experimental model for human bilateral abductor vocal cord paralysis. Documentation by measurements of arterial blood gases and direct in vivo measurements of airway resistance following bilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve section and endoscopic arytenoidectomy was attempted.

Long Evans (LE), Sprague-Dawley (SD) and Wistar (WU) are outbred rat stocks, which differ in terms of brain, physiology, pharmacological reactivity and behavior. Extending our previous work with males from these stocks, we here report the analysis of ultrasonic vocalizations (USV) in females. Identical to our previous studies, we tested them as pups for 40-kHz calls during short-term isolation, as juveniles for appetitive 50-kHz calls during a cage test or when being tickled, and finally as adults for 22-kHz calls in a fear conditioning paradigm. Stock differences were obtained in all four tes

Early life adversity (ELA), such as childhood neglect, is a significant risk factor for the development of anxiety and other disorders characterized by affective dysfunction, with worse outcomes in women/girls. Rodent models of ELA, such as maternal separation, show comparable behavioral and neural correlates to patient populations. Despite this, many behavioral assays aimed at understanding affective processing in rodents lack species-specific relevance and are therefore limited in translational application. To address this, we utilized an ethologically relevant rat-specific cue of potential

Strain differences in temperament and physiology have been reported for several animal species, but nonhuman primates have not been well studied in this regard. We assessed behavioral and physiology in Chinese-Indian hybrid (n = 13) and Indian-origin (n = 29) nursery-reared rhesus monkey infants. Previous data indicate that Chinese-origin and Chinese-Indian hybrid rhesus exhibit more aggression directed toward humans and conspecifics and are more irritable in response to neonatal assessment procedures than are Indian-derived rhesus. In addition, in rhesus adults, low levels of cerebrospinal fl

Developmental exposures to PCBs are implicated in the etiology of neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs). This observation is concerning given the continued presence of PCBs in the human environment and the increasing incidence of NDDs. Previous studies reported that developmental exposure to legacy commercial PCB mixtures (Aroclors) or single PCB congeners found in Aroclors caused NDD-relevant behavioral phenotypes in animal models. However, the PCB congener profile in contemporary human samples is dissimilar to that of the legacy Aroclors, raising the question of whether human-relevant PCB mixt

Early weaning is used to advance postpartum ovulation in beef cows, but triggers a stress response, affecting cows' and calves' welfare. Our aim was to compare the response to early weaning in multiparous and primiparous cows. Seventy-one days after birth, calves from 14 primiparous and 11 multiparous cows were weaned. Since birth, cow's body weight (BW), body condition (BC), milk yield and calves' BW were recorded. Basophil/neutrophil relationship, total protein and albumin concentrations were measured before and after weaning. The distance between each cow and its calf before weaning, as wel

OBJECTIVE: Unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP) due to recurrent laryngeal nerve injury (RLN) is a major cause of voice disorders. We have recently identified three biomolecules (agrin, acetylcholine, and neuregulin) with the potential to promote reinnervation after RLN injury. This study aimed to determine if a gelatin injectable with the reinnervating biomolecules will induce site-specific amplification of neurotrophic factor release and reinnervation after RLN injury in unilateral vocal fold paralysis.
METHODS: C57BL/6 mice underwent RLN transection with the following treatment allocatio

Maternal immune activation (MIA) induced by lipopolysaccharides or polyinosinic:polycytidylic acid injections can induce behavioral abnormalities in adult mouse offspring. Here, we used the soluble tachyzoite antigen from Toxoplasma gondii, a parasite that infects approximately two billion people, to induce MIA in mice. The adult male offspring showed autism-relevant behaviors and abnormal brain microstructure, along with a pro-inflammatory T-cell immune profile in the periphery and upregulation of interleukin-6 in brain astrocytes. We show that adoptive transfer of regulatory T (Treg) cells l

High level of positive affectivity acts as a protective factor against adverse effects of stress and decreases vulnerability to mood disorders and drug abuse. Fifty-kHz ultrasonic vocalizations (50-kHz USV) index the level of positive affect in the rat, whereas stable, trait-like inter-individual differences in terms of vocalization activity exist. Previously we have demonstrated that chronic stress can alter the effect of repeated amphetamine administration on 50-kHz vocalizations, and this effect is different in rats with high and low positive affectivity. In the present study it was tested

BACKGROUND: The potential adverse effect of mobile phone radiation is currently an area of great concern in the field of public health. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the effect of mobile phone radiation (900 MHz radiofrequency) during hatching on postnatal social behaviors in chicks, as well as the effect on brain size and structural maturity estimated using 3.0 T magnetic resonance imaging. At day 4 of incubation, 76 normally developing chick embryos were divided into the control group (n = 39) and the radiation group (n = 37). Eggs in the radiation group were exposed to mobil

UNLABELLED: Central pattern generators (CPGs) in the brain stem are considered to underlie vocalizations in many vertebrate species, but the detailed mechanisms underlying how motor rhythms are generated, coordinated, and initiated remain unclear. We addressed these issues using isolated brain preparations of Xenopus laevis from which fictive vocalizations can be elicited. Advertisement calls of male X. laevis that consist of fast and slow trills are generated by vocal CPGs contained in the brain stem. Brain stem central vocal pathways consist of a premotor nucleus [dorsal tegmental area of me

Limited previous evidence suggests that killer whales (Orcinus orca) are capable of vocal production learning. However, vocal contextual learning has not been studied, nor the factors promoting learning. Vocalizations were collected from three killer whales with a history of exposure to bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) and compared with data from seven killer whales held with conspecifics and nine bottlenose dolphins. The three whales' repertoires were distinguishable by a higher proportion of click trains and whistles. Time-domain features of click trains were intermediate between tho

Vocal control nuclei in songbirds display seasonal changes in volume that are regulated by testosterone (T) and its androgenic (5α-dihydrotestosterone; DHT) or estrogenic (17β-estradiol; E(2)) metabolites. In male canaries, T regulates expression of the microtubule-associated protein doublecortin (DCX), a marker of neurogenesis. We examined the effect of T and its two metabolites alone or in combination on DCX expression in adult female canaries. Treatment with T or with DHT+E(2) increased HVC volume and neuron numbers as well as the total numbers of fusiform (migrating) and round (differentia

We localized the motoneurons and occipital and true spinal innervation of sound-producing organs in pimelodid catfish. Pimelodids have a stridulatory organ composed of the pectoral girdle and the first pectoral fin ray, a swimbladder with extrinsic muscles to produce drumming sounds, and a tensor tripodis (TT) muscle that inserts on the swimbladder. Sonic muscles are innervated by three branches (rostral, dorsal and caudal) of the occipital nerve (Oc) and the first two true spinal nerves (S1 and 2): pectoral spine muscles (abductor, adductor and ventral rotator) by the rostral branch of Oc and

Rat pups emit a highly stereotyped and well-characterized distress call in the ultrasonic range when socially isolated. We compared the modulatory influence of catecholamines and indoleamines on rat pup ultrasonic calls using pharmacologic probes. Administration of low doses of monoamine reuptake inhibitors produced significant, selective changes in the calls emitted by isolated 10-day-old pups. Acute administration of clomipramine (CMI; relatively 5-HT specific) reduced the rate of calling at low doses (1.0 and 5.0 mg/kg [3.2 and 18.0 mmol/kg] SC) but had reduced efficacy at higher doses (10

1. In the unanaesthetized cat, an injection of 0.75 mg of morphine into a lateral cerebral ventricle produced strong hyperglycaemia; on intravenous injection, 10 to 30 times larger doses were required. Other effects produced with both injections were shivering, pupillary dilatation, opening of the eyes, miaowing, periods of excitation, and analgesia. Between the periods of excitation the cat did not react to objects moving in front of its eyes and it had a vacant stare.2. Noradrenaline, adrenaline, and 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) injected intraventricularly (250 mug, twice) depressed the hyperg
