BACKGROUND: If 'passenger lymphocyte syndrome' (PLS) is a well-recognized complication in ABO-mismatched solid organ transplantation, the coexistence of this reaction with recipient's alloimmunization against multiple antigens expressed on the residual red blood cells in the graft is less common and unpredictable.
METHODS: The receiver of an ABO minor-mismatch liver graft from a cadaveric donor developed haemolytic anaemia within 2 weeks after transplantation. The organ donor was of blood group O D+C+c+E+e+ K+k+ Le(a+b-) and the recipient, A1 D-C-c+E-e+ K-k+ Le(a-b-). The donor and recipient

INTRODUCTION: Correct donor selection in living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) is essential not only to decrease the risks of complications for the donors but also to increase the survival of both the graft and the recipient. Knowing their most frequent reasons of donor elimination is so important for transplantation centers to gain time. In this study we evaluated the effectiveness of potential donors in LDLT and studied the reasons for nonmaturation of potential liver donors at our transplantation center.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We studied the outcomes of 342 potential living donor candid

INTRODUCTION: The shortage of cadaver organs has led to expansion of living donor kidney transplantations with, 30% increase among ABO-incompatible cases in Japan and the use of marginal extended donors. Herein we have reported the outcome after an ABO-incompatible kidney transplantation from an aged living-related donor who suffered from mild diabetes mellitus and hypertension.
CASE REPORT: A 48-year-old man underwent ABO-incompatible kidney transplantation from his 76-year-old father, using anti-CD20 antibody induction, followed by cyclosporine (CsA), mycophenolate mofetil (MMF), and predni

We report a case of an epidermolysis bullosa acquisita (EBA) patient with a unique immunofluorescence pattern. The patient had pruritic erythematous plaques and tense blisters. Histopathological examination showed a subepidermal blister without acantholysis. Salt-split direct immunofluorescence demonstrated clear linear IgG and C3 deposition along the dermal side of the basement membrane zone; this deposition is characteristic of EBA. Indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) using monkey esophagus mucosa as substrate showed intercellular IgG deposition throughout the epidermis, which suggested pemphi

Based on data reported to the OPTN/UNOS Liver Transplant Registry between 1988-2004: 1. There was a very small difference in 5-year graft survival rates comparing living and deceased donors in adult (4.3%) and pediatric patients (2.4%). 2. Although graft survival rates of split liver transplants were lower than whole liver grafts before 1998, 5-year graft survival results of more recent split grafts (65.8%) have become comparable to those of whole liver grafts (66.5%). Among recipients in good condition, split (67.7%) and whole grafts (70.0%) yielded equivalent survival rates. 3. Lower graft s

BACKGROUND: It is believed that the development of gastric cancer (GC) before the age of 50 has a hereditary basis. Blood group A and history of gastric cancer in first-degree relatives have been shown to be risk factors for GC.
METHODS: In this case-control study, we enrolled patients with GC who were diagnosed before the age of 50. Patients who were diagnosed as having GC were selected. A total of 534 cases were found; of these, 44 diagnosed before the age of 50 were included in the case group. For the control group, 22 males and 22 females were randomly selected from the remaining subjects

Valved allografts are frequently used in the repair of congenital heart defects in children. Although the longevity of these grafts is generally very good, there continue to be ongoing problems with allograft stenosis, allograft valve insufficiency, and subsequent allograft failure, particularly in younger children. This review presents data on the immunologic and nonimmunologic risk factors implicated in valved allograft failure, in addition to ongoing investigation into the improvement of allograft function.

In a population-based case-control study of stomach cancer conducted in Warsaw, Poland, 464 cases and 480 controls were interviewed to evaluate the role of family history and other risk factors. A greater than threefold increase in risk was associated with a history of stomach cancer in a first degree relative (OR = 3.5; 95% Cl = 2.0-6.2), but no excess risk was seen with other forms of cancer. The risk associated with familial occurrence was not significantly modified by gender, age or ABO blood type, and did not vary with Laurén histologic classification. Our findings add to evidence for a f

Expression of A, B and H isoantigens in cervical mucosa was demonstrated by specific red cell adherence test in 92 cervical lesions (40 chronic cervicitis, 12 dysplasia and 40 carcinoma cervix). Eighty percent cases of chronic cervicitis showed a moderate reaction. On the contrary, in carcinoma cervix, 75% cases were found to be SRCA negative. In dysplasia, the intensity of red blood cell adherence was found to be directly related to the degree of cellular differentiation. Study of A, B and H isoantigens might help in deciding the prognosis of dysplasia and/or early detection of malignancy.

We report the successful HLA-identical sibling bone marrow transplantation (BMT) of a 12-year-old boy with chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis (CMC) syndrome who also had Coomb's positive haemolytic anaemia and recurrent bronchopneumonia with resulting bronchiectasis. Conditioning was with busulfan and cyclophosphamide. Engraftment was slow but complete. Selective red cell haemopoietic failure was encountered soon after transplantation but resolved spontaneously. The patient remains alive 3 years after transplantation and now has normal immune, haemopoeitic and pulmonary functions. No manifestat

Anti-B antibody causing sever hemolytic anemia and renal failure was found in the serum of a blood group B patient who had received a bilateral lung transplant from a blood group O donor. Although the donor origin of the antibody was not confirmed, it is likely that the anti-B antibody was produced by donor passenger B lymphocytes.

In the past five years 12 patients have been identified presenting with chronic duodenal ulcer (DU) disease and with no evidence of current or recent Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) infection. Four of them were taking regular non-steroidal anti inflammatory agents, one was subsequently found to have Crohn's disease of the duodenum, and one to have the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. The remaining six patients with idiopathic DU disease were remarkable for their absence of the A1 blood antigen gene. Detailed studies of gastric function were performed in these six patients and compared with H pylori

Wide variation has been observed in the natural history of human and murine giardiasis, which could be due to factors associated with the parasite or with the host. In humans, prolonged infections with Giardia duodenalis have been associated with hypogammaglobulinemia, protein-calorie malnutrition, and prior gastrectomy. The duration of infection or severity of symptoms may also be influenced by the humoral immune response and by other factors such as ABO blood group and HLA antigen type. Elimination of Giardia muris is impaired in hypothymic mice, B-cell-deficient mice expressing the xid gene

A variety of helminth parasites have A and B blood group antigens on their surface. These antigens may cross-react with elevated concentrations of A and B isohemagglutinins in some patients and give false-positive results in the serologic diagnosis of visceral larva migrans caused by T. canis. To clarify this point, serum from patients with visceral larva migrans and elevated T. canis antibody titers as determined by ELISA were absorbed with AB blood cells and retested by ELISA without a demonstrable decline in T. canis antibody titers. Similarly, absorption with T. canis embryonated egg antig

HLA antigens were determined in 25 Finnish patients with both Reiter's disease and skin lesions identical with psoriasis vulgaris. HLA B27 was found in 23 cases (92%) B13 was found in one case, Bw17 and Bw37 were not found at all. The absence of these three "psoriatic" HLA antigens in the present series indicates that the psoriasis-like skin lesions belong to the varying clinical picture of Reiter's disease and not to the HLA linked psoriasis vulgaris.
