Primary care clinicians' perspectives on migraine management in Aotearoa New Zealand: a qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Despite being a common and disabling neurological disease, migraine is often underdiagnosed and undertreated. Although most patients with migraine can be effectively managed in primary care, people with migraine in Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ) report multiple barriers to care and negative impacts of migraine on physical and mental health, work and quality of life. AIM: This study aimed to describe the experience of primary care clinicians with managing migraine disease in NZ and identify enablers and barriers to effective care. METHODS: Clinicians were recruited through advertisem

#Yourpalaeolife: Interrogating the Status of Fieldwork Among Early Career Palaeontology Researchers.

It has been proposed that palaeontology as an academic discipline is facing an 'extinction of experience', whereby junior researchers are not gaining enough fieldwork expertise to be able to perpetuate the practice into the next generation, risking the discipline disconnecting from nature and impacting the acquisition of new data. So far, this idea has been based on anecdotes and without empirical evidence. This study attempts to gather quantitative and qualitative data on the current status of field skills and fieldwork among early career palaeontologists globally by inviting them to complete

Management of progressive joint disorders by non-physician healthcare providers in South Africa: A mapping study to inform pharmacist integration.

BACKGROUND: Progressive joint disorders (PJDs), including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and are leading causes of disability worldwide. Early multidisciplinary intervention is critical; however, delayed non-pharmacological management, fragmented referral pathways and limited integration of pharmacists, despite their potential role in medication management and early 'red flag' identification, remain common. AIM: To identify which PJDs are managed by which healthcare providers, to inform pharmacist referral pathways and promote integrated care. SETTING: Non-physician healthcare pro

The role of occupational therapy in the rehabilitation of adults with persistent post-concussion symptoms in Australia and New Zealand: A qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Following mild traumatic brain injury, people can experience persistent post-concussion symptoms (PPCS) that lead to the need for rehabilitation, including occupational therapy services, to support recovery. There is, however, limited literature documenting the occupational therapy role in adult PPCS rehabilitation. This study aimed to explore the role of occupational therapy, including the assessments and interventions used, in the rehabilitation of adults with PPCS in Australia and New Zealand. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive research design was employed. Occupational thera

For Whom Does Chemsex Increase Sexual Risk? Considering Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), Antiretroviral Therapy (ART), and the Dual Control Model.

Background: Chemsex, or the use of specific substances (e.g., methamphetamines, GHB/GBL) to enhance sexual experiences, is a well-documented risk factor for sexual risk behavior and subsequent HIV transmission among men who have sex with men (MSM). However, it is unclear why chemsex contributes to sexual risk and how HIV prevention measures, such as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and antiretroviral therapy (ART), impact this relationship. The present study sought to confirm the event-level association between chemsex engagement and sexual risk, examine how use of PrEP and ART, as well as sexu

Psychological Inflexibility, Cognitive Fusion, and Thought-Action Fusion as a Transdiagnostic Construct: Direct Comparisons Among Major Depressive Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, and Healthy Controls.

OBJECTIVE: Evidence suggests that acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) processes function as transdiagnostic factors in both major depressive disorder (MDD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) individually. However, few studies have directly compared these two clinical disorders. Therefore, this study aimed to identify potential transdiagnostic factors associated with ACT across MDD, OCD, and healthy control (HC) groups. METHODS: A total of 34 MDD patients, 43 OCD patients, and 46 HCs were recruited through subway advertisements and outpatient services at a university hospital. Partici

Breast cancer screening practices during a multifaceted crisis: Data from Lebanon.

Public health efforts towards breast cancer (BC) prevention have been largely absent from healthcare planning in modern-day Lebanon. Mammography screening campaigns have been present since 2002, but their implementation has been inconsistent in terms of pricing, locations, and the centers involved. In 2020, Lebanon was caught in the whirlwind of the Covid pandemic while facing a brewing economic crisis and a direct hit to the capital's center of commerce. The impact of the complex situation created by these crises on BC screening remains to be identified, given the high prevalence of BC and th

Rationale and design of the rheumatoid arthritis non-responders to treatment (RANT) study: Use of a bioinformatics platform and "decentralized" clinical recruitment design.

The Rheumatoid Arthritis Non-responders to Treatment (RANT) study (https://clinicaltrials.gov/study/NCT05447182) uses a novel bioinformatics platform to facilitate a "decentralized" patient oriented clinical study. The goal is to identify genetic factors associated with inadequate response to biologic and targeted synthetic rheumatoid arthritis (RA) medications. The study was advertised through social media, research website postings, and targeted recruitment of potentially eligible patients in academic practices and existing RA research registries. Interested RA patients who failed two or mor

Cross-cultural validation and measurement invariance of anxiety and depression symptoms: A study of the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) in 42 countries.

BACKGROUND: Depression and anxiety are among the most prevalent mental health issues experienced worldwide. However, whereas cross-cultural studies utilize psychometrically valid and reliable scales, fewer can meaningfully compare these conditions across different groups. To address this gap, the current study aimed to psychometrically assess the Brief Symptomatology Index (BSI) in 42 countries. METHODS: Using data from the International Sex Survey (N = 82,243; Mage = 32.39; SDage = 12.52; women: n = 46,874; 57 %), we examined the reliability of depression and anxiety symptom scores of the BS

Effects of Acute Aerobic Exercise Versus Acute Zolpidem Intake on Sleep in Individuals with Chronic Insomnia.

Introduction  Sleeping pills are assumed to be the most efficacious means of treating acute insomnia, but their use has associated risks. Exercise could provide a healthy alternative treatment for insomnia, particularly if it could be shown to have comparable efficacy to sleeping pills. Objective  The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of acute exercise versus zolpidem on chronic insomnia. Methods  Seventeen participants with chronic insomnia (recruited from advertisements) participated in a parallel randomized controlled trial (exercise, n  = 9; zolpidem, n  = 8). Participants i

Substantial non-compliance of online pharmacy catalogues with guidelines.

Online pharmacies are popular worldwide. In Germany, there were 150 active online pharmacies in 2022. As the competition is therefore fierce and new customers need to be acquired, some of these online pharmacies create catalogues that advertise products in self-medication to attract the interest of potential customers. This study analyzed the allergy, cold, and gastrointestinal tract categories from the summer/spring 2023 catalogues of two different online pharmacies in Germany. A comparison of the active ingredients in both catalogues and an analysis of the product's conformity with the Germa

Recruitment strategies for reaching adults aged 50 years and older with low socioeconomic status for participation in online physical activity interventions.

BACKGROUND: Generally, the health condition of those with higher socioeconomic status (SES) is better compared to those with lower SES. The application of appropriate strategies to reach low SES populations with electronic health (eHealth) interventions is thus of major importance to reduce health inequalities. eHealth-studies providing detailed information on recruitment strategies are scarce, despite the fact that this information is crucial for comparable research and implementation. OBJECTIVE: To provide insight into the reach, sample characteristics and costs of three pre-planned strateg
