Devastating yet treatable complication of tuberculous meningitis: the resistant TB abscess.

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculous abscesses may be resistant to medical treatment and may cause devastating complications. CASE REPORT: Such a lesion persisted in a child treated for tuberculous meningitis and resulted in a seizure with prolonged anoxic damage to the brain. The imaging findings are typical and these lesions should be considered for surgical management.

Disseminated nocardiosis with thyroid involvement: a case report.

Nocardiosis is a life-threatening infection that affects the lungs, skin, and central nervous system, particularly in immune-compromised patients. We report a case of disseminated nocardiosis with pneumonia, brain abscesses, meningitis, and thyroiditis, for an individual with recent steroid therapy. Recovery was uneventful with a 4-month course of sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim.

A Case of Disseminated Infection due to Actinomyces meyeri Involving Lung and Brain.

Actinomyces meyeri is rarely isolated in cases of actinomycosis. The identification of A. meyeri had historically been difficult and unreliable. With the recent development of 16S ribosomal RNA (16S rRNA) sequencing, Actinomyces species such as A. meyeri can be isolated much more reliably. A. meyeri often causes disseminated disease, which can be secondary to frequent pulmonary infections. A penicillin-based regimen is the mainstay of A. meyeri treatment, with a prolonged course usually required. Here, we report a case of pulmonary actinomycosis with brain abscess caused by A. meyeri that was …

Imaging of actinomycosis in various organs: a comprehensive review.

Actinomycosis is a chronic suppurative bacterial infection caused by Actinomyces species. Actinomyces israelii is the organism most commonly … ass, and extensive inflammatory extensions. Actinomycosis in the central nervous system may produce brain abscess, meningitis, subdural empyema, actinomycetoma, and spinal and cranial epidural abscess. In general, actinomycosis responds well to antibiotic therapy, but long-term follow-up after treatment is needed because of frequent relapses.

A Rare Primary Pituitary Abscess Caused by Cutibacterium Acnes.

INTRODUCTION: Pituitary abscess is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition with an incidence of 0.2 to 1.1% of operative pituitary lesions. Preoperative diagnosis is difficult because it shares many similarities with other pituitary lesions in terms of signs and symptoms and radiographic findings. The author would like to share a case of primary pituitary abscess due to Cutibacterium acnes infection, which is probably the first case reported in an adult patient. CASE PRESENTATION: A 60-year-old woman with having medical history of diabetes mellitus who suffered from severe headache,

Case Report of a Primary Pituitary Abscess and Systematic Literature Review of Pituitary Abscess with a Focus on Patient Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Pituitary abscess is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition with an incidence of 0.2%-1.1% of operative pituitary lesions. Diagnosis can be challenging, because this disorder shares many similarities with other pituitary lesions in terms of signs and symptoms and radiographic findings. Most pituitary abscesses are categorized as secondary, arising from preexisting pituitary lesions or in conjunction with transsphenoidal surgery, sepsis, meningitis, or sinusitis. There have been only a few reports of primary pituitary abscess, which occurs without any of the aforementione

Cerebral chromoblastomicosis--a rare case report of cerebral abscess and brief review of literature--a case report.

A rare case of Cerebral Chromomycosis caused by chromogenic fungus Cladosporium trichoides in a 35 year old male with classical presentation of cerebral abscess is being presented. The case report lays emphasis on the histological diagnosis of chromogenic fungus in the wall of the abscess cavity, surgically removed from a well delineated circumscribed lesion in the frontal lobe of the cerebrum. The causative fungus could be detected even in unstained paraffin sections. The diagnosis could be made only after surgical removal and histopathological examination. The mycological culture could not b

Acute Bacterial Meningitis and Systemic Abscesses due to Streptococcus dysgalactiae subsp. equisimilis Infection.

Disseminated abscesses due to group G β-hemolytic Streptococcus dysgalactiae were observed in a 57-year-old cirrhotic patient with the skin being the putative way of entry for the pathogen. S. dysgalactiae is a rare agent in human infections responsible for acute pyogenic meningitis. The mortality rate associated with S. dysgalactiae bacteraemia and meningitis may be as high as 50%, particularly in the presence of endocarditis or brain abscesses. In our patient, main sites of infections were meningitis and ventriculitis, spondylodiscitis, septic arthritis, and soft-tissue infections. In contra…

Pitfalls in the diagnosis of brain tumours.

Establishing the diagnosis of a brain tumour is not always a straightforward process. Many non-neoplastic neurological diseases can mimic brain neoplasms on neuroimaging or on histological examination, including multiple sclerosis, stroke, pyogenic abscess, toxoplasmosis, tuberculosis, cysticercosis, fungal infections, syphilis, sarcoidosis, Behçet disease, radiation necrosis, venous thrombosis, and others. Conversely, several types of brain neoplasms, such as glioblastomas, low-grade gliomas, CNS lymphomas, and brain metastases, can present in the absence of typical tumefactive lesions, posin

Intracranial complications of acute and chronic mastoiditis: report of two cases in children.

OBJECTIVE: The clinical picture of mastoiditis, sigmoid sinus thrombosis and brain abscess has changed with the advent of antibiotics. A delay in the recognition of intracranial complications in children and in the institution of appropriate therapy may result in morbidity and mortality. Increased mortality of the children has been correlated with the neurological status of the patient on admission to hospital. METHOD: A retrospective study was made of two children with acute mastoiditis and sigmoid sinus thrombosis and chronic mastoiditis with cerebellar abscess treated in 1997 in the ENT De…

Novel presentation and approach to management of hepatopulmonary syndrome with use of antimicrobial agents.

A 44-year-old man with hepatitis C-associated liver cirrhosis, cyanosis, digital clubbing, and platypnea presented with left-side hemiplegia found to be due to a brain abscess. Hepatopulmonary syndrome was diagnosed after demonstration of the presence of a massive intrapulmonary shunt. Although the anomalous vascular channel never was defined anatomically, follow-up studies confirmed the presence of a functional shunt. Culture of a sample from the abscess yielded Streptococcus intermedius. It was hypothesized that the patient's pulmonary vascular pathology was due, in large part, to chronic el…
