Assessment of the natural history of forefoot bursae using ultrasonography in patients with rheumatoid arthritis: a twelve-month investigation.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the natural history and clinical significance of forefoot bursae over a 12-month period in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). METHODS: Patients with RA (n=149) attending rheumatology outpatient clinics were assessed at baseline. A total of 120 participants, mean±SD age 60.7±12.1 years and mean±SD disease duration 12.99±10.4 years, completed the 12-month followup (98 women, 22 men, 93 rheumatoid factor positive, 24 rheumatoid factor negative, and 3 unknown). Musculoskeletal ultrasound (US) was used to identify forefoot bursae in all of the participants. Clinical m

[Sonographic criteria of omarthritis].

The sonographic examination of the shoulder has established itself in the diagnostic variety of imaging methods. Especially the results of the rotator cuff have contributed to the fact that arthrosonography is now indispensable for the shoulder examination. In this paper, another scan--the examination of the fossa axillaris--is added to the standard ones to find the early changes in the shoulder capsule in order to obtain efficient results in discovering the omarthritis.

Popliteal cysts (Baker's cysts) in adults. I. Clinical and roentgenological results of operative excision.

Forty patients were re-examined between 6 months and 15 years (mean 4 years) after excision of a popliteal cyst. Forty-six operations had been performed, including one bilateral cyst and five recurrent cysts. The history was reviewed with respect to the preoperative symptoms, clinical and roentgenological signs, the operative and histopathological findings and the postoperative course. Fifteen operations were followed by wound healing complications or tense swelling of the calf simulating deep venous thrombosis. At clinical follow-up a reccurent cyst was found in 63 per cent of the knees. A si

A Novel Ultrasound-Guided Injection Strategy for Rapid Functional Recovery in Frozen Shoulder: A Multicenter Randomized Trial.

BACKGROUND: Current frozen shoulder (FS) therapies present a clinical dilemma: although intra-articular corticosteroids with home exercise provide proven medium-term (3-month) benefits, they lack short-term (<4-week) efficacy for rapid recovery; conversely, manipulative treatments achieve faster outcomes but carry invasiveness risks. These limitations highlight the urgent need for developing and validating novel noninvasive approaches with prompt therapeutic effects. PURPOSE: To compare the efficacy and safety of ultrasound-guided tendon surface (UGTS) injection versus manipulation under loca

A comprehensive scoring system for the diagnosis and staging of adhesive capsulitis: development, application, and implications.

INTRODUCTION: Adhesive capsulitis (AC), often referred to as frozen shoulder, presents a diagnostic challenge due to its insidious onset and progressive nature. The condition is characterized by pain and restricted motion in the shoulder, with a predilection for individuals between 40 and 60 years of age. A novel scoring system was developed to enhance the accuracy of diagnosing AC and distinguishing between its stages, aiming to streamline clinical decision-making and treatment planning. METHODS: A cohort of patients with symptoms suggestive of AC was assessed using the new scoring system, w

Changes in the mean incidence and variance of orthopedic diseases before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in Korea: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: During the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, the amount of moderate- to high-intensity physical activity significantly decreased. Therefore, the epidemiology of musculoskeletal diseases could possibly have changed. We assessed changes in the incidence of and variance in non-traumatic orthopedic diseases before and after the COVID-19 pandemic in Korea. METHODS: This study included data from the Korea National Health Insurance Service, which covers the entire Korean population (approximately 50 million), from January 2018 to June 2021. Using International Classification of Di

A genome-wide association study identifies 5 loci associated with frozen shoulder and implicates diabetes as a causal risk factor.

Frozen shoulder is a painful condition that often requires surgery and affects up to 5% of individuals aged 40-60 years. Little is known about the causes of the condition, but diabetes is a strong risk factor. To begin to understand the biological mechanisms involved, we aimed to identify genetic variants associated with frozen shoulder and to use Mendelian randomization to test the causal role of diabetes. We performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of frozen shoulder in the UK Biobank using data from 10,104 cases identified from inpatient, surgical and primary care codes. We used dat

Adhesive Capsulitis of the Shoulder: Evaluation With US-Arthrography Using a Sonographic Contrast Agent.

Adhesive capsulitis (AC) is a painful and disabling disorder, which caused restricted motion and chronic pain of shoulder. Intracavitary contrast-enhanced ultrasound has been recently applied to assess obstructive bile duct diseases, tubal patency, vesicoureteric reflux and so on. The aim of this study was to detect the value of US-arthrography by injecting the contrast agent SonoVue into glenohumeral joint compared with US in diagnosing AC. Utrasound (US) and US-arthrography images of 45 patients with AC were compared with that of 45 control subjects without AC with MRI as a gold standard. Pa

The presence and influence of posterior capsule tightness on different shoulder problems.

BACKGROUND: In the literature it has been shown that posterior capsule flexibility is a precursor to shoulder problems. However, no study thus far has shown the influence of the flexibility of posterior capsule in different shoulder pathologies. OBJECTIVE: This study set about to compare the role of posterior capsule tightness in different shoulder problems. METHODS: One-hundred-twenty-five patients diagnosed with shoulder subacromial impingement syndrome (n= 52), partial rotator cuff tear (n= 31) or frozen shoulder (n= 42) and 30 asymptomatic peers participated in the study. Association of MMP3 genotype with susceptibility to frozen shoulder: a case-control study in a Chinese Han population.

Genetic factors may play an important role in frozen shoulder etiology, which may involve matrix metalloproteinase-3 (MMP3) gene polymorphisms. In this study, we examined single nucleotide polymorphisms in MMP3 for their association with frozen shoulder susceptibility in a Chinese Han population. The rs591058, rs650108, and rs679620 polymorphisms in the MMP3 gene were genotyped in 112 subjects diagnosed as having frozen shoulder and in 143 healthy controls. rs650108 was found to be significantly associated with an increased risk of frozen shoulder. For other single nucleotide polymorphisms, no
