Reducing the overall use of broad-spectrum antibiotics in NICU is associated with less prevalence of multi-drug resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae isolation in premature infants.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of an antibiotic stewardship program on the resistance profiles of Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae) in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). This was achieved by examining changes in the antimicrobial resistance patterns of K. pneumoniae isolates collected from preterm infants in a level 3 NICU between 2013 and 2022. METHODS: We examined antibiotic resistance patterns in all isolated K. pneumoniae strains cultured from preterm infants (gestational age < 37 weeks, postnatal age > 3 days) admitted to our NICU between 2013 and

Multidrug-Resistant Proteus mirabilis and Other Gram-Negative Species Isolated from Native Egyptian Chicken Carcasses.

Poultry carcasses may be reservoirs for the zoonotic transmission of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria to humans and pose a major public health hazard. During the isolation of Salmonella from poultry and other foods, many of the presumptive typical Salmonella colonies on xylose lysine deoxycholate (XLD) agar were found to lack the invA gene, which is the specific target gene for Salmonella spp. Therefore, the current study aimed to estimate the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance profiles of extensively drug-resistant invA-negative non-Salmonella isolates recovered from native Egyptian chic

Molecular characterization of Escherichia coli producing extended-spectrum β-lactamase CTX-M-14 and CTX-M-28 in Mexico.

The spread of ESBL-producing Escherichia coli has constantly increased in both clinical and community infections. Actually, the main ESBL reported is the CTX-M family, which is widely disseminated between the Enterobacteriaceae family. The epidemiology of the CTX-M family shows the CTX-M-15 variant dominating worldwide, followed by CTX-M-14 and CTX-M-27. The specific ESBL-producing E. coli clones included mainly the sequence types ST131, ST405, and ST648. In this report, we present the molecular characterization of ESBL-producing E. coli clinical isolates from eight hospitals in Mexico. From a

Anomalous Hall conductivity in a honeycomb topological insulator under counter-rotating bicircular laser field.

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) caused by Escherichia coli (E. coli) are becoming increasingly difficult to treat due to rising antibiotic resistance, primarily driven by the production of β-lactamase enzymes such as TEM β-lactamase. Variations in the TEM gene can lead to reduced antibiotic efficacy; however, the specific effects of the resulting TEM protein variants on drug binding and enzyme stability remain largely underexplored. PURPOSE: In this study, we analyzed a single E. coli strain isolated from a UTI patient to characterize the interactions between its TEM β-lactamase a

Intraperitoneal vancomycin for peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis in children: Evaluation of loading dose guidelines.

BACKGROUND: Current pediatric International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis guidelines for initial treatment of peritoneal dialysis (PD)-associated peritonitis suggest either monotherapy with cefepime or double therapy with first-generation cephalosporin or glycopeptide and ceftazidime or aminoglycoside. When using vancomycin, the intraperitoneal (IP) recommended pediatric loading dosage is 1000 mg/L of dialysate. This is based on adult pharmacokinetic (PK) studies and roughly translates to the adult recommendation where 30 mg/kg in 2 L is approximately 1000 mg/L. However, since the dialysate
