BACKGROUND: Targeting interventions where most needed and effective is crucial for public health. Malaria control and elimination strategies increasingly rely on stratification to guide surveillance, to allocate vector control campaigns, and to prioritize access to community-based early diagnosis and treatment (EDT). We developed an original approach of dynamic clustering to improve local discrimination between heterogeneous malaria transmission settings.
METHODS: We analysed weekly malaria incidence records obtained from community-based EDT (malaria posts) in Karen/Kayin state, Myanmar. We s

Analysis of imaging mass cytometry (IMC) data and other low-resolution multiplexed tissue imaging technologies is often confounded by poor single-cell segmentation and suboptimal approaches for data visualization and exploration. This can lead to inaccurate identification of cell phenotypes, states, or spatial relationships compared to reference data from single-cell suspension technologies. To this end we have developed the "OPTimized Imaging Mass cytometry AnaLysis (OPTIMAL)" framework to benchmark any approaches for cell segmentation, parameter transformation, batch effect correction, data

Parkinson's disease (PD) is one of the most widespread neurological disorders associated with nerve damage without definitive treatment. Impairments, such as trembling and slowing down in hand movements are among the first symptoms. For this purpose, in this study, machine learning (ML)-based models were developed by using keyboard keystroke dynamics. According to patients' drug use status, disease severity, and gender, we created 14 different sub-datasets and extracted 378 features using raw keystroke data. We developed alternative models with Support Vector Machines (SVM), k-Nearest Neighbor

Malfunctions in the immune system cause multiple sclerosis (MS), which initiates mild to severe nerve damage. MS will disturb the signal communication between the brain and other body parts, and early diagnosis will help reduce the harshness of MS in humankind. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) supported MS detection is a standard clinical procedure in which the bio-image recorded with a chosen modality is considered to assess the severity of the disease. The proposed research aims to implement a convolutional neural network (CNN) supported scheme to detect MS lesions in the chosen brain MRI sl

Smart card data are widely used in generating the origin and destination (O-D) matrix for public transit, which contains important information for transportation planning and operation. However, the generation of the O-D matrix is limited by the smart card data information that includes the boarding (origin) information without the alighting (destination) information. To solve this problem, trip chain methods have been proposed, thereby greatly contributing in estimating the destination using the smart card data. Nevertheless, unlinked trips, that is, trips with unknown destinations, are a per

BACKGROUND: The prediction of bone disorders varies between ortho-physicians. A precise bone disorder cataloging system is proposed based on a renewed method for estimating calcium value from a radiological image of the bone.
METHODS: A deliberate method was employed, the binning technique, for the input image which divides the input image into non-overlapping blocks to obtain accurate calcium volume estimation. In this proposed approach, the input image undergoes two stages of the process. In stage 1, input image preprocessing is accomplished with median filtering to eliminate the unwanted n

AIMS: The dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) phenotype is the result of combined genetic and acquired triggers. Until now, clinical decision-making in DCM has mainly been based on ejection fraction (EF) and NYHA classification, not considering the DCM heterogenicity. The present study aimed to identify patient subgroups by phenotypic clustering integrating aetiologies, comorbidities, and cardiac function along cardiac transcript levels, to unveil pathophysiological differences between DCM subgroups.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We included 795 consecutive DCM patients from the Maastricht Cardiomyopathy Reg

BACKGROUND: Facial activity during pain is composed of varying combinations of a few elementary facial responses (so-called Action Units). A previous study of experimental pain showed that these varying combinations can be clustered into distinct facial activity patterns of pain. In the present study, we examined whether comparable facial activity patterns can also be identified among people suffering from clinical pain; namely, shoulder pain.
METHODS: Facial expressions of patients suffering from shoulder pain (N = 126) were recorded while twice undergoing a battery of passive range-of-motio

Yaws, a non-venereal treponemal disease, is targeted for eradication by 2020 but accurate epidemiological data to guide control programs remain sparse. The Solomon Islands reports the second highest number of cases of yaws worldwide. We conducted a cluster randomized survey of yaws in two provinces of the Solomon Islands. One thousand four hundred and ninety-seven (1,497) children 5-14 years of age were examined. Clinical signs of active yaws were found in 79 children (5.5%), whereas 140 children (9.4%) had evidence of healed yaws lesions. Four hundred and seventy (470) (31.4%) children had a

Falls represent an important health problem for older adults. This issue continues to generate interest in the research and development of fall detection systems. In previous work we proposed an acoustic fall detection system (acoustic-FADE) that employs an 8-microphone circular array to automatically detect falls. Acoustic-FADE has achieved encouraging results: 100% detection at 3% false alarm rate in laboratory tests. In this paper, we use a dataset from previous work to investigate how to further improve AFADE performance. To analyze the relationship between fall and non-fall signatures we

Epidemiological studies of Paget's disease of bone (PDB) suggest a pronounced geographical variation in the prevalence of the disease and a decrease in prevalence and clinical severity over time. To analyze epidemiological and clinical features of PDB in Italy, we recently established a registry of Italian PDB cases and performed radiological, biochemical, and bone scan surveys in the towns of Siena and Turin. The overall prevalence of PDB in Italy varied between 0.7% and 2.4%. Prevalence rates increased with age and were higher in men than in women. We observed clinically confirmed familial a

The authors describe the mass incidence of haemolytic-uraemic syndrome (HUS) in five children from one community. They draw attention to the importance of collaboration with communal hygienists and food hygienists in epidemiological investigations of haemolytic-uraemic syndrome. In view of the necessity of early collection of biological material, specimens and examination of contacts, the authors draw attention to the importance of adhering to compulsory notification of HUS.

It is discussed why some, but not all HLA-B27-positive persons get disease when triggered by certain infections. The conclusions are that a possible modifying gene may be found on the other HLA haplotype or outside the HLA complex. Given an epidemic infection afflicting a family, it is the possible differences of other environmental factors which may be of interest, not a further description of the infection initially recognized. The familial clustering of disease is based upon modifying genetic factor(s) and/or environmental factor(s) shared by the family members. Timing of the environmental

Hepatitis C is a liver infection triggered by the hepatitis C virus (HCV). The infection results in swelling and irritation of the liver, which is called inflammation. Prolonged untreated exposure to the virus can lead to chronic hepatitis C. This can result in serious health complications such as liver damage, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and potentially death. Therefore, rapid diagnosis and prompt treatment of HCV is crucial. This study utilizes machine learning (ML) to precisely identify hepatitis C in patients by analyzing parameters obtained from a standard biochemistry test. A hybrid
