Computer-assisted analysis of Mycobacterium avium fingerprints using insertion elements IS1245 and IS1311 in a Caribbean setting.

A total of 33 clinical isolates of the Mycobacterium avium complex from 25 patients, identified by means of biochemical and cultural characteristics, the Accuprobe system and DT1/DT6 PCR, were further analysed using novel insertion elements IS1245 and IS1311 in a French Caribbean setting. PvuII-cleaved DNA and non-radioactive Southern hybridization and detection systems were used for fingerprinting with both IS elements. The data confirmed the specificity of the two probes for M. avium in our setting and highlighted a significant proportion of M. intracellulare-infected patients in this region

Analysis of flow acceleration during erythrocyte filtration: dependence of hematocrit and cell rigidity.

At flow onset the blood filtration rate accelerates to a steady state, this may affect the interpretation of red blood cell (RBC) filterability. We studied the acceleration of flow while the pressure is built up across the filter to analyse effects of various hematocrits and RBC rigidity by glutaraldehyde (GA) hardening. This was analysed by a new filtration system with high time resolution and unlimited filtration volume. The system uses a digital balance that samples the accumulated weight (e.g., filtration rate through 5 microns Nucleopore membranes) with on-line computer communication. The

Potential for improvement in radiation therapy.

A successful strategy for improving the efficacy of radiation therapy has been to improve dose distribution, that is, reduce treatment volume toward target volume. This is so as the smaller treatment volume has permitted a higher dose to the target (hence a high tumor control probability) and a lesser volume of non-target tissues being irradiated (consequently a reduced frequency and severity of treatment related morbidity). There are in place several important means for further improvements in dose distributions. These include: (a) 3D graphic reconstruction of the affected part with definitio

Mass transfer in the cornea. II. Ion transport and electrical properties of a series membrane tissue.

The electrical and active transport properties of isolated rabbit cornea are investigated by computer experimentation. The tissue is modeled as a series membrane system and the passive ion fluxes through it are described by the frictional formulation of irreversible thermodynamics. From short-circuit current (SCC) data, it is found that the epithelial sodium pump rate (P) is not appreciably changed when much of the sodium in the solution bathing the anterior corneal surface (concentration = c(11)) is replaced by choline, with choline-free medium posteriorly. Simulations of open-circuited corne

Trueness of 3-dimensionally printed complete arch implant analog casts.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Although a completely digital workflow has numerous advantages, a physical definitive cast may be especially helpful for the accurate assembly of components of complex complete arch-fixed prostheses, the evaluation of esthetic and occlusion features, or prosthesis fabrication. Research on the accuracy of additive complete arch casts with implants positioned with a large anterior-posterior (A-P) spread is sparse. PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the trueness of complete arch 4-implant analog casts with a large A-P distribution fabricated with di

MetaIDNet: A Fast Brain-Computer Interface for Color Vision Assessment.

Our laboratory has recently demonstrated objective, quantitative, and precise brain-computer interface (BCI)-based color vision (CV) assessment. During assessment, participants look at a flashing stimulus that alternates between two light sources. Light sources that appear to be different colors elicit larger steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEPs); those that appear to be similar colors elicit smaller SSVEPs. Thus, the stimulus-evoked responses depend on an individual's CV. BCI-based CV assessments evaluate CV by observing SSVEP sizes elicited over a color space; their accuracy depends

Pushing the boundaries of robotic computed tomography: automated twin-robot CT scan with maximum reachability.

Computed tomography is a widely used imaging method for non-destructive testing. However, standard CT systems face fundamental limitations when scanning large objects such as car bodies, which must fit between the X-ray source and detector, both of which need freedom of movement around the specimen. Twin-robotic CT systems with high degrees of freedom address these limitations by enabling free positioning of the X-ray source and detector in space, making non-destructive CT testing of large objects feasible. However, achieving collision-free positioning of the robots is a challenging problem th

EEG vs. Hybrid EEG-fNIRS BCI for FES Control in Healthy Subjects: A Blind Randomized Study and an Open Dataset.

Among the various brain-computer interface (BCI) modifications used in post-stroke rehabilitation, BCI systems combined with functional electrical stimulation (FES) are considered the most effective. As a preliminary step toward optimizing such systems for clinical application, it remains unclear whether using electroencephalography (EEG) alone versus a hybrid EEG and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) approach affects real-time three-class BCI-FES control performance in healthy individuals. In a blind randomized study, 16 healthy volunteers completed five BCI-FES training sessions

Microneedle drug delivery carriers capable of achieving sustained and controlled release function.

Traditional injection methods such as subcutaneous (SC) and intramuscular (IM) injections are commonly used in clinical settings for their rapid therapeutic effects. However, these methods can cause additional pain to patients and may lead to infections and nerve damage. Oral administration and other forms of drug delivery are susceptible to the first-pass effect, resulting in low bioavailability and systemic side effects. In recent years, with the advancement of material and computer sciences, a novel drug delivery method known as microneedles has emerged. Microneedle drug delivery systems co

Hamiltonian simulation-based quantum-selected configuration interaction for large-scale electronic structure calculations with a quantum computer.

Quantum-selected configuration interaction (QSCI) is an approach for quantum chemical calculations using current quantum computers. In conventional QSCI, Slater determinants used for the wave function expansion are sampled by iteratively performing approximate wave function preparation and subsequent measurement in the computational basis, and then the subspace Hamiltonian matrix is diagonalized on a classical computer. In this approach, preparation of a high-quality approximate wave function is necessary to accurately compute total energies. Here we propose a Hamiltonian simulation-based QSCI

Compare the accuracy and performance of two different types of CAD-CAM surgical guides for maxillary positioning in orthognathic surgery.

Three-dimensional computer-aided design/manufacturing (CAD/CAM) maxillary guides have been developed to enhance surgical predictability, reducing mandibular interference and improving planning accuracy, especially in asymmetrical cases. This study aimed to compare the accuracy of two types of CAD/CAM guides used for maxillary positioning in orthognathic surgery. In this retrospective cohort study, 38 patients who underwent bimaxillary orthognathic surgery by the same surgeon were divided into two groups. Group 1 (n = 21) used a tooth-bone-supported guide with dual functionality for maxillary p

IMU/UWB Fusion Method Using a Complementary Filter and a Kalman Filter for Hybrid Upper Limb Motion Estimation.

Motion capture systems have enormously benefited the research into human-computer interaction in the aerospace field. Given the high cost and susceptibility to lighting conditions of optical motion capture systems, as well as considering the drift in IMU sensors, this paper utilizes a fusion approach with low-cost wearable sensors for hybrid upper limb motion tracking. We propose a novel algorithm that combines the fourth-order Runge-Kutta (RK4) Madgwick complementary orientation filter and the Kalman filter for motion estimation through the data fusion of an inertial measurement unit (IMU) an

A Review of Computer-Aided Breast Cancer Diagnosis Using Sequential Mammograms.

Radiologists assess the results of mammography, the key screening tool for the detection of breast cancer, to determine the presence of malignancy. They, routinely, compare recent and prior mammographic views to identify changes between the screenings. In case a new lesion appears in a mammogram, or a region is changing rapidly, it is more likely to be suspicious, compared to a lesion that remains unchanged and it is usually benign. However, visual evaluation of mammograms is challenging even for expert radiologists. For this reason, various Computer-Aided Diagnosis (CAD) algorithms are being

Decoding Covert Speech From EEG-A Comprehensive Review.

Over the past decade, many researchers have come up with different implementations of systems for decoding covert or imagined speech from EEG (electroencephalogram). They differ from each other in several aspects, from data acquisition to machine learning algorithms, due to which, a comparison between different implementations is often difficult. This review article puts together all the relevant works published in the last decade on decoding imagined speech from EEG into a single framework. Every important aspect of designing such a system, such as selection of words to be imagined, number of

Validation of CE modeling with a contactless conductivity array detector.

Dynamic computer simulation data are compared for the first time with CE data obtained with a laboratory made system comprising an array of 8 contactless conductivity detectors (C(4) Ds). The experimental setup featured a 50 μm id linear polyacrylamide (LPA) coated fused-silica capillary of 70 cm length and a purpose built sequential injection analysis manifold for fluid handling of continuous or discontinuous buffer configurations and sample injection. The LPA coated capillary exhibits a low EOF and the manifold allows the placement of the first detector at about 2.7 cm from the sample inlet.

An open-access, mobile compatible, electronic patient register for rheumatic heart disease ('eRegister') based on the World Heart Federation's framework for patient registers.

BACKGROUND: Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) remains a major disease burden in low-resource settings globally. Patient registers have long been recognised to be an essential instrument in RHD control and elimination programmes, yet to date rely heavily on paper-based data collection and non-networked data-management systems, which limit their functionality. OBJECTIVES: To assess the feasibility and potential benefits of producing an electronic RHD patient register. METHODS: We developed an eRegister based on the World Heart Federation's framework for RHD patient registers using CommCare, an ope
