Cercarial dermatitis, a neglected allergic disease.

Cercarial dermatitis (swimmer's itch) is a common non-communicable water-borne disease. It is caused by penetration of the skin by larvae (cercariae) of schistosomatid flukes and develops as a maculopapular skin eruption after repeated contacts with the parasites. The number of outbreaks of the disease is increasing, and cercarial dermatitis can therefore be considered as an emerging problem. Swimmer's itch is mostly associated with larvae of the bird schistosomes of Trichobilharzia spp. Recent results have shown that mammalian infections (including man) manifest themselves as an allergic reac…

Systemic contact dermatitis--kids and ketchup.

Systemic manifestations of allergic contact dermatitis due to consumption of foods containing balsam of Peru (Myroxylon pereirae)-associated chemicals have recently been reported in children. We present seven children with widespread, recalcitrant dermatitis who experienced 60-80% clearance after initiating a diet low in balsam of Peru, specifically the tomato product ketchup. Furthermore, because we have observed a high prevalence of ketchup in our pediatric patients' diets, we recommend consideration of moderate consumption of this product in patients with recalcitrant widespread dermatitis.

[Severe toxic dermatitis after injection lipolysis].

The subcutaneous injection of phosphatidylcholine-containing substances is a frequently used method to reduce small localized fat deposits. Even though injection lipolysis is generally safe and free of complications, there have been rare reports on poor results, hematoma, infection or localized skin and tissue necrosis. A 28-year-old woman presented with an extensive toxic dermatitis characterized by well defined, erythematous, partly livid plaques as well as severe edema and strong pain about eighteen days after injection lipolysis on the thighs and knees.

Contact dermatitis: from pathomechanisms to immunotoxicology.

Contact allergens are small reactive chemicals. They cause allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) by activating the innate and adaptive immune system. Contact allergens are very peculiar because of their built-in autoadjuvanticity that allows them to trigger sterile inflammation following skin penetration. The innate inflammatory response involves the triggering of pattern recognition receptors either by direct chemical interaction with such receptors or by induction of endogenous activators. I discuss here the recent findings regarding prevalence and predisposition, the identification of innate im…

Autoimmune progesterone dermatitis: a case report.

Background. Autoimmune progesterone dermatitis is a rare cyclic premenstrual allergic reaction to progesterone produced during the luteal phase of a woman's menstrual cycle. Patients present with a variety of conditions including erythema multiforme, eczema, urticaria, angioedema, and progesterone-induced anaphylaxis. Case. Thirty-eight-year-old woman G2P2002 presents with erythema multiforme and urticarial rash one week prior to her menses starting one year after menarche. She was treated with oral contraceptive pills and the symptoms resolved. Conclusion. This is a typical case of progestero…

Woringer-Kolopp disease mimicking foot dermatitis.

Woringer-Kolopp disease, also known as localized pagetoid reticulosis, is a rare cutaneous lymphoproliferative disorder classified as a solitary variant of mycosis fungoides (MF). Despite the indolent and benign nature of the disease, misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment may result in years of debilitating symptoms and even loss of function. We present the case of a patient with long-standing Woringer-Kolopp disease that mimicked foot dermatitis. Histopathologic examination demonstrated epidermotropic infiltration of atypical lymphocytes that were CD3+ CD4- CD8-. The patient was successful…

Platelet gel in cutaneous radiation dermatitis.

INTRODUCTION: Radiotherapy, alone or in combination with chemotherapy and/or surgery, is a fundamental and irreplaceable method of treating … s platelet gel, chosen for its limited cost and ease of preparation, in chronic cutaneous radiation dermatitis. METHODS: "Home-made" platelet gel was produced by treating platelets with autologous thrombin. The safety of the product was ensured by microbiological tests. The autologous platelet gel was applied topically once a week, for a mean duration of 35 …

Therapeutic strategies in allergic contact dermatitis.

Due to its high prevalence, allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) has an important economic and occupational health impact on society. ACD presents as an inflammatory response to small molecules and involves both skin resident cells and activated skin infiltrating T cells. Activation of skin resident cells plays an essential role in the initial sensitization phase. A number of different pathways are crucially involved in this phase including the activation of pattern recognition receptors such as TLR, inflammasome activation and production of reactive oxygen species all of which contribute to rele…

The etiology, epidemiology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, pathological diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of contact, allergic-contact, atopic, and seborrheic dermatitis of the vulva are described in details. Lichen simplex chronicus is additionally described as complication of chronic itching dermatitis.

[Henna symbolic tattoo and real dermatitis].

INTRODUCTION: Henna, or Lawsonia inermis, has been used since antiquity by women in the Orient for dyeing the hair, hands, and feet. Contact dermatitis to pure henna is very rare, most often caused by additives such as perfume oils or paraphenylenediamine (PPD). We report the case of a girl who presented contact dermatitis to henna associated with eczema to draw attention to the dangers related to its use. CASE REPORT: A 12-year-old girl developed erythematovesicular and edematous lesions with very itchy burning, suggestive of contact dermatitis, 48 hours after application of black henna. Les…

Irritant contact dermatitis: effect of age.

Knowledge on age-relationship to irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) remains of interest. We searched for articles and textbooks on age-relationship to ICD and evaluated relevant data. Irritant response may be enhanced in children and decline with increasing age. In general, older skin reacts more slowly and with less intensity to irritants when compared with young skin. Such age-related changes may depend: (i) on differences in percutaneous penetration in old and young skin, and/or on (ii) differences in the microcirculatory efficiency, which serves as the route by which inflammatory cells make…
