BACKGROUND: Menkes disease is an X-linked neurodegenerative disease caused by mutation in ATP7A gene, which codes for copper-transporting ATPase. It usually presents in early infancy with neuro-regression, hypotonia, seizures, and kinky hair. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain shows cerebral atrophy, subdural effusions, and tortuous cerebral blood vessels.
CASE CHARACTERISTICS: We report the case of a 7-month-old boy who presented with global developmental delay, seizures, and increasing head size since 2 months of age and history of sibling death. He had macrocephaly, sparse, hypo

Richner-Hanhart syndrome (tyrosinemia type II) is a rare autosomal recessive disease associated with high serum tyrosine levels caused by the deficiency of tyrosine aminotransferase enzyme. We report a 15-year-old female patient with complaints of bilateral photophobia and tearing, which started during the infancy period. Biomicroscopic examination revealed bilateral circular corneal opacities on the inferior quadrant and small dendritic lesions at the center of the circular opacities. Blood tests showed a tyrosine level of 508 micromol/L (normal range: 30-150). On her dermatologic examination

Because of impaired host defenses and a favorable environment at specific anatomic sites, there is an increased prevalence of seborrheic dermatitis, mucosal and cutaneous candidiasis, tinea pedis, and onychomycosis in the geriatric population compared with other age groups. Both KOH and fungal culture are timely, convenient, and cost-effective methods of diagnosis. Sensitivity of these tests depends on proper technique for specimen collection and experience. KOH 20% with DMSO and DTM are highly recommended. Treatment should be tailored to the diagnosis and the individual patient. This includes

Psoriasis is still a relatively poorly understood inflammatory dermatosis that is resistant to many therapies. Because the pathogenesis is poorly understood, rational treatment is elusive. Until recently, the North American public was able to achieve successful resolution with an over-the-counter topical preparation marketed for dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis called SkinCap, which has now been withdrawn from the market. The purpose of this study was to examine the histologic changes induced by this preparation in a well-developed psoriatic plaque. Serial punch biopsies were taken over a 2-

The evidence base for routine therapeutic decisions in dermatological out-patients was studied in a random sample of the case-notes from 115 out-patients. The evidence base of therapy prescribed when the diagnosis was ascertained was studied in literature searches in MEDLINE and EMBASE. Evidence was structured into primary evidence consisting of randomised controlled trials, and secondary evidence consisting of follow-up studies or applying trial results from clinical analogies, e.g. atopic and seborrheic dermatitis treatment. Randomised controlled trials could be found describing 38% (95% con

Dandruff is a clinical alteration of the skin that consists histologically of orthokeratotic clumps with minute parakeratotic foci found in inflammatory pathologies such as seborrheic dermatitis and psoriasis. Therefore, some nucleated cells should be found in dandruff and hence there is a possibility that forensically typeable DNA could be extracted from dandruff. Because of a particular case in which we were involved, a study was carried out to determine whether or not DNA could be extracted from dandruff, and if the two most widely used extraction techniques (Chelex and organic) would be ap

BACKGROUND: The presence of dermatoses is very common in Acquired Human Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). The present study was undertaken to correlate the various dermatoses with the evolutionary phases of AIDS.
METHODS: We examined 223 HIV-infected patients older than 13 seen at the University of São Paulo, Faculty of Medicine of Ribeirão Preto, from 1989 to 1993. Patients were divided according to the CDC classification and assigned to groups I, II and III (initial stages of AIDS) and to group IV (fully symptomatic stage of AIDS).
RESULTS: The mean frequency of dermatoses detected in pati

Many nondermatologist physicians have become skilled at identifying and treating certain human immunodeficiency virus-related skin diseases. They are reserving referrals primarily for diagnostically or therapeutically challenging skin disorders. Our purpose was to study the reasons for referral of human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients, and to review the management of select diseases. One-hundred and fifty human immunodeficiency virus-positive outpatients were evaluated consecutively for cutaneous diseases that prompted their referrals by nondermatologist physicians. The three most com

Of the 1124 human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients studied, one or more cutaneous lesions were found in 113 (98.3%) of the 115 patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and in 541 (53.6%) of 1009 patients with AIDS-related complex (ARC). Kaposi's sarcoma, multidermatomal, necrotic herpes zoster, and pruritic maculopapular rashes are common cutaneous manifestations of AIDS and its related complex (ARC) in Zambia. The maculopapular rash results from a lymphoplasmacytic angiitis in the dermis, possibly in response to the presence of HIV in the dermis. Candidiasis, seve

Pseudohypoaldosteronism is a rare syndrome occurring during early infancy, which is mainly characterized by salt-depletion crises. Sodium chloride is lost via the kidneys resulting in a reduced sodium level and raised potassium level in the serum, leading to life-threatening disturbances of water and acid-base concentration. The excessive sodium loss seems to be caused by an unresponsiveness of the renal tubules to endogenous and exogenous mineralocorticoids. The colon, salivary and sweat glands, which are also involved in sodium reabsorption, may likewise be affected by the disease. We descri

BACKGROUND: Seborrhoeic dermatitis (SD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder associated with Malassezia species, immune dysregulation and potential oxidative stress. While previous studies have explored general inflammatory and oxidative mechanisms, specific biomarkers such as raftlin and 8-isoprostaglandin F2α (8-iso-PGF2α) have not yet been investigated in SD.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate serum raftlin and 8-iso-PGF2α levels in patients with SD and to determine their relationship with disease severity.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 50 patients with SD and 50 age- and sex-match

The critical CO2 hydration reaction to bicarbonate and protons is catalyzed by carbonic anhydrases (CAs, EC 4.2.1.1). Their physiological role is to assist the transport of the CO2 and HCO3- at the cellular level, which will not be ensured by the low velocity of the uncatalyzed reaction. CA inhibition may impair the growth of microorganisms. In the yeasts, Candida albicans and Malassezia globosa, the activity of the unique β-CA identified in their genomes was demonstrated to be essential for growth of the pathogen. Here, we decided to investigate the sulfonamide inhibition profile of the homol

BACKGROUND: Studies on the pathophysiology and comorbidities associated with lichen planopilaris (LPP) and frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA) are limited.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of androgen excess in the postmenopausal LPP population, in relation to demographics and comorbidities.
METHODS: A retrospective data analysis of 413 patients with LPP, FFA, and LPP/FFA seen in the Department of Dermatology at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Ohio between 2005 and 2015 was conducted. Of this cohort, 168 patients met the inclusion criteria.
RESULTS: Andro

Henna is a traditional cosmetic agent and is used worldwide. It is used worldwide not only as a cosmetic agent to stain the hair, skin and nails but also is applied to the body on lesions in the treatment of seborrheic dermatitis or fungal infections. Different pathologies have been described as caused by henna. The aim of this study is to draw attention to the adverse effects of henna, applied over the whole body, observed in glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) enzyme deficient siblings. In the present paper, we report on two siblings with G6PD deficiency who developed haemolytic anaemia

Over the last twelve years, only three cases of a dissiminated form of histiocytosis X, in infancy, have been treated at the Institute for Mother and Child Health Care in Novi Sad. The clinical picture exhibits a very characteristic, prolonged (from two to nine months) first stage of the illness. Its general symptoms are: fever, general decline of the infant, seborrheic dermatitis, coughing and recurrent purulent otitis. In the second stage the symptoms are even more pronounced but they depend on localization and the functional deterioration of the organs involved: the lungs, liver, pancreas,
