Charlie Chaplin and gesture training in severe aphasia: A controlled double-blind single-case experimental design.

BACKGROUND: Aphasia following a stroke is a frequent and disabling condition that decreases quality of life. The use of gesture has been proposed as a way to enhance aphasia recovery. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to explore whether 2 types of gesture interventions could improve communication in individuals with severe aphasia. METHODS: This was a pilot study performed at home in routine care by an outreach team. The study had a controlled double-blind single-case experimental design (SCED): a controlled multiple baseline design across 3 participants and 2 behaviors (gesture and naming). Three male pa

Potential strategy for assessing QT/QTc interval for drugs that produce rapid changes in heart rate: Electrocardiographic assessment of the effects of intravenous remimazolam on cardiac repolarization.

AIMS: Remimazolam is a new, ultra-short-acting benzodiazepine developed for intravenous (IV) use during procedural sedation and in general anaesthesia. Two trials were conducted to characterize its effects on cardiac repolarization. METHODS: A thorough QT/QTc (TQT) study assessed electrocardiography effects of therapeutic and supratherapeutic doses of remimazolam and midazolam. To investigate whether RR-QT hysteresis effects due to rapid heart rate changes might have confounded the QTc assessments in the TQT trial, a second trial used continuous IV remimazolam infusion to achieve stable heart

Analgesic efficacy of ketamine and magnesium after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

Background Ketamine and magnesium are antagonists of the N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor, and are valuable adjuvants for multimodal analgesia and opioid sparing. Data are limited regarding the opioid sparing efficacy of the combined intraoperative application of these agents in laparoscopic bariatric surgery. The objective of this study was to compare the postoperative opioid sparing properties of a single intraoperative dose of ketamine versus a combination of single doses of ketamine and magnesium after laparoscopic gastric sleeve resection in bariatric patients. Methods One hundred and twenty

The effect of calcium supplementation on blood pressure in non-pregnant women with previous pre-eclampsia: A randomized placebo-controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Low dietary calcium is associated with the hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, and evidence suggests that the risks associated with pre-eclampsia are reduced by calcium supplementation. In the general (non-pregnant) population, low dietary calcium intake is associated with hypertension with inconsistent evidence that calcium supplementation may reduce blood pressure. Women with pre-eclampsia are also at risk of hypertension later in life. An exploratory sub-study among early participants enrolled in the WHO long-term calcium supplementation in women at high risk of pre-eclampsia (
