Treatment of Vestibular Disorders (Inner Ear Balance Problems): How Does Your Physical Therapist Treat Dizziness Related to Inner Ear Balance Problems?

Dizziness is very common, but it is never normal. Dizziness can make performing daily activities, work, and walking difficult. Inner ear balance problems can make people dizzy when they turn their head, which can cause problems during walking and make people more likely to fall. Most of the time dizziness is not from a life-threatening disease. Often, dizziness is related to a problem of the vestibular (or inner ear balance) system. Vestibular disorders can be caused by infections in the ear, problems with the immune system, medications that harm the inner ear, and rarely from diabetes or stro…

Evaluation of effectiveness of three-dimensional printed ear splint therapy following ear elevation surgery in microtia patients: A randomized controlled trial.

AIM: This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of a 3D-printed ear splint with that of a conventional thermoplastic ear splint after microtia reconstruction. METHODS: Patients who underwent ear elevation surgery with postauricular fascia coverage between October 2017 and October 2018 were included. They were randomly divided into the experimental group (3D-printed ear splint) and the control group (thermoplastic ear splint) and underwent routine postoperative rehabilitation and antiscar therapy. Splint therapy was initiated 4 weeks postoperatively and continued until 24 weeks postoperativ…

The Rolling Earlobe Flap for Dilated Ear Holes Following Ear Gauging: A Novel Approach to Aesthetically Preserving Earlobe Soft Tissue Volume.

Patients are increasingly seeking repair of their earlobes following ear gauging. Research has shown that current repair techniques either excessively reduce the lobular volume or leave an obvious scar along the free edge of the earlobe. In our case series, we describe the use of a novel technique for repairing earlobes following ear gauging using a rolling earlobe flap that preserves the lobular volume and avoids leaving a scar on the free edge of the lobule. The procedure was performed on 3 patients (6 earlobes) who had defects from ear gauging that ranged from 3.0 to 6.5 cm. There were no p…

Ossiculoplasty in the Setting of Erosive Middle Ear Disease.

Erosive middle ear disease (EMED) involves a spectrum of otologic conditions that involve chronic inflammatory processes, including chronic otitis media with or without cholesteatoma, that contribute to osseous erosion of the middle ear and ossicular chain. Treatment of EMED involves the eradication of the disease followed by ossicular chain reconstruction to optimize hearing outcomes. There are many challenges regarding ossiculoplasty in EMED, including the potential for microscopic residual disease, variability of ossicular chain status following disease eradication, and concern for recurren…

The UmboMic: Characterization and Testing of a Middle Ear Microphone.

PURPOSE: We report developments on the "UmboMic," a piezoelectric microphone for fully implanted cochlear implants. Internal implantation of the microphone for fully implantable cochlear implants is the goal of future technology, as it has the potential to significantly improve the device performance and user experience. METHODS: The UmboMic is designed for implantation in the middle ear cavity, where it detects the motion of the umbo via the piezoelectric effect. The UmboMic sensor is made from two layers of the piezoelectric material called polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF). Steps towards bi…

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the middle ear: a case report.

Primary mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the middle ear is a rare malignancy. We report a case of 58-year-old woman who presented with purulent discharge from the left ear for seven months, followed by bloody otorrhea for one month. She was diagnosed with mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the middle ear after mastoidectomy. Then, she received x-ray radiation therapy (total dose: 3,000 cGy). However, nine months later, she underwent a comprehensive surgical intervention, including subtotal temporal bone resection, partial parotidectomy, and neck dissection, due to local tumor recurrence. The patient succu…

Optogenetics for therapeutic use in the brain, eye, and ear.

Optogenetics is the process of photosensitizing cells and thereby controlling their activity with light. The discovery of channelrhodopsins … ntial treatments that can target and reverse pathologic pathways in the brain. Thus, in the recent years, there is a great interest in therapeutic optogenetics, centered mainly around restoration of the major senses of vision and hearing. This chapter will first highlight the ongoing evolution of optogenetics from an investigative tool to a therapeuti …

Urinalysis in the white-eared opossum (Didelphis albiventris).

To evaluate parameters and discuss findings of urinalysis conducted in non-captive, clinically healthy adult white-eared opossums (Didelphis albiventris). Twenty-five urine samples from different animals were analyzed: 15 from males and 10 from females, 14 obtained by spontaneous urination and 11 by cystocentesis. The analyses included physical, chemical, and sediment examinations. The results showed that 88% of the urine samples were citrine yellow, with urine specific gravity ranging from 1.019 to 1.084 and pH between 6 and 7. In the chemical analysis, there was no colorimetric reaction for …

Role of the Ear in Meningitis: A Narrative Review of Neuroimaging.

Background/Objectives: Meningitis is a life-threatening condition often associated with ear pathology. This narrative review explores the critical role of the ear in Meningitis, emphasizing neuroimaging findings. Methods: Congenital malformations of the inner ear may significantly increase the risk of recurrent Meningitis, especially in children. Otomastoiditis, through direct extension or bony erosion, is a frequent cause of otogenic Meningitis. Cholesteatoma can erode bone and lead to severe intracranial complications, including Meningitis. Imaging is essential for early detection of bone de…
