Act No. 8/1988 on infractions and sanctions in the social order, 7 April 1988.

This Act sets forth infractions and sanctions with respect to labor and social security. Among other things, it classifies the following as very serious offenses: 1) unilateral decisions of employers involving discrimination, either favorable or adverse, in the matter of compensation, hours, training, promotion, and other labor conditions with respect to sex and kinship with other workers; and 2) establishment of conditions through advertising, offers of work, or any other means that constitute discrimination, either favorable or adverse, with respect to access to employment for reasons of sex

Bayesian network modelling to identify on-ramps to childhood obesity.

BACKGROUND: When tackling complex public health challenges such as childhood obesity, interventions focused on immediate causes, such as poor diet and physical inactivity, have had limited success, largely because upstream root causes remain unresolved. A priority is to develop new modelling frameworks to infer the causal structure of complex chronic disease networks, allowing disease "on-ramps" to be identified and targeted. METHODS: The system surrounding childhood obesity was modelled as a Bayesian network, using data from The Longitudinal Study of Australian Children. The existence and di

Thinking out of the (Olympic) box: is it time to reconsider permanent hosting for sustainable Olympics? A conceptual review.

Final Revised AbstractThe modern Olympic Games confront a sustainability crisis that a half-century of incremental reforms has failed to resolve. This conceptual paper questions the entrenched "business-as-usual" logic of rotational Olympic hosting-a model established over a century ago under vastly different economic and environmental realities-and invites academic and policy communities to reconsider structural alternatives. Drawing on Rittel and Webber's (1973) framework, we characterize Olympic sustainability as a "wicked problem" whose complexity, stakeholder pluralism, and structural con

Socioeconomic status and economic hardship attenuated the associations between early tobacco or nicotine use and brain outcomes in preadolescent children.

OBJECTIVES: Early tobacco use (before age 11) is linked to poorer cognition and reduced cortical surface area and volume in young adolescents. This study examined how socioeconomic status (SES) factors - parental education, household income, and economic hardships - influenced these associations. METHODS: Using baseline (N=11,876) and year 3 (N=10,414) datasets from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study, we assessed the impact of baseline tobacco/nicotine use initiation on cognitive scores, cortical volume, thickness, and surface area across the entire cohort and in propensity-matc

Evaluation of different strategies for swine house exhaust odor mitigation.

Air pollution and odor nuisance are critical challenges for the sustainable development of the swine industry. Several mitigation technologies have been studied to reduce odors from swine facilities. However, existing technologies continue to face issues such as low removal efficiency, secondary pollution, and high cost, while existing practical evaluations in swine farms remain inadequate. This study evaluated six different synergistic air pollution mitigation strategies for exhaust odor from an intensive swine farm by focusing on ammonia (NH3), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and particul

A Student-Led Patient Navigation Program: Assessing the Goals of Individuals Experiencing Homelessness.

INTRODUCTION: Homeless populations face higher barriers to health care access. A student-led patient navigation program (PNP) was established pairing groups of trained medical students, who serve as patient navigators, together with an individual experiencing homelessness (IEH) to develop goals tailored to each IEH's needs. The purpose of this study was to collect data pertaining to the goals of IEH centered on the social determinants of health (SDH) domains. METHODS: IEH were invited to voluntarily participate in the program and patient navigators met with IEH weekly for a 12-week period to

Family environment and self-esteem development: A longitudinal study from age 10 to 16.

In this study, we examined the effect of family environment on self-esteem development from late childhood (age 10) through adolescence (age 16), using 4-wave longitudinal data from 674 Mexican-origin families living in the United States. To assess family environment, a multi-informant approach was used (i.e., mother, father, and child) to construct latent variables that minimize the influence of response biases. Using cross-lagged panel models (CLPMs) and random intercepts cross-lagged panel models (RI-CLPMs), we tested the prospective effects of parenting behaviors (warmth, hostility, monito

Proposed Conceptual and Experience-Based Framework for Reaching an Optimal Vaccine Launch Strategy.

Obtaining market approval and reimbursement are necessary but not sufficient conditions for the implementation of new vaccines in high-income countries to maximize their long-term preventative value. Comprehensive pre-launch and launch-phase economic evaluations of the disease and the vaccine are necessary to support long-term public health improvement by the vaccination program. This review highlights the construction of these evaluations conceived as a plan, methods, and a tool. They can be generated by different stakeholders (e.g., payers, producers, target groups) interested in the value s

Global and high-income regional burden and healthcare costs of musculoskeletal diseases, 1990-2023.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to clarify the latest epidemiologic trends, economic costs, and key drivers of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) … sify, driven primarily by ageing, obesity, and occupational factors, and has not been alleviated by economic development. Future prevention and control efforts should focus on weight management and occupational ergonomic interventions to curb the growth of the disease and mitigate the substantial economic pressure.

The impact of non-pharmaceutical interventions on the socio-economic and demographic determinants of COVID-19 incidence: A spatial analysis of the pandemic in Toronto, Canada.

Socio-economic and demographic variables have been identified as determinants of transmission of, and susceptibility to, COVID-19. In this study, we analyse the heterogeneous impacts of non-pharmaceutical interventions on the socio-economic and demographic (SED) variables driving COVID-19 incidence in Toronto during the 2nd, 3rd and 4th waves of the pandemic. Spatial autoregressive models were used to explore associations between COVID-19 incidence and SED variables at neighborhood scale, accounting for vaccination levels. This approach helps clarify how SED factors and vaccine coverage drive

A synthesis of dimensions of wellbeing among adolescents and young people living with HIV from Sub-Saharan Africa for measurement in economic evaluation: a qualitative overview of reviews.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents and young people living with HIV (AYPLHIV) in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) face intersecting structural and psychosocial challenges that compromise their wellbeing, yet these realities are poorly captured by generic wellbeing measures used in economic evaluations. This overview of reviews synthesised evidence from SSA to identify key determinants of social wellbeing to inform the co-development of a contextually relevant wellbeing scale suitable for economic evaluations in the region. METHODS: We searched reviews published between January 2000 and September 2023 across ten
