[Aplasia cutis congenita and antithyroid drugs during pregnancy: Case series and literature review].

BACKGROUND: Aplasia cutis congenita (ACC) following in utero exposure to antithyroid drugs such as methimazole/carbimazole (MTZ/CMZ) has been reported since 1972. Though currently included in MTZ/CMZ embryopathy, it remains poorly characterized and is little discussed. Having seen two cases within a short period of time, we carried out a literature review and searched the French pharmacovigilance database for notification of cases. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We performed a search of the literature in the Medline database using the following keywords: "aplasia cutis congenita", "birth skin defects"

Unique variant of Adams-Oliver syndrome with dilated cardiomyopathy and heart block.

Reported herein is the case of a 2-year-old boy with Adams-Oliver syndrome who presented with dilated cardiomyopathy and complete atrioventricular block. The patient had aplasia cutis congenita with partial aplasia of the skull bones, and terminal transverse limb malformations characteristic of the disease. Although congenital cardiac malformations may be associated with the syndrome, dilated cardiomyopathy has not been previously reported to be associated with the syndrome.

Aplasia cutis congenita: approach to evaluation and management.

Aplasia cutis congenita (ACC) refers to any condition in which there is absence of skin at birth. This can be isolated ACC occurring on the scalp, with or without underlying ectopic neural tissue, or ACC can be associated with other conditions such as Adams-Oliver syndrome or epidermolysis bullosa. We discuss the different types of ACC and associated anomalies along with an approach to diagnosis and management.

Aplasia cutis congenita of the trunk associated with fetus papyraceous.

Aplasia cutis congenita is failure of development of all layers of the skin. This condition most commonly affects the scalp and is typically an isolated finding. In rare instances, it can affect other anatomic sites and may be associated with syndromes or other causes. We discuss an infant born with extensive aplasia cutis congenita of the trunk related to twin fetal demise (fetus papyraceous). Conservative management with moist dressings led to satisfactory healing.

A case of extensive Aplasia Cutis Congenita with underlying skull defect and central nervous system malformation: discussion of large skin defects, complications, treatment and outcome.

Aplasia Cutis Congenita (ACC) is a rare condition characterized by the absence of a portion of skin at birth. Skin defects are usually small (0.5 to 3 cm) and located on the scalp. Although there can be other physical or genetic abnormalities, ACC is most often a benign isolated condition. Rarely is an underlying bony defect present, and this association increases the rate of complications. We report a case of a newborn male with ACC of the entire crown and vertex scalp, non-ossified parietal skull and dysplastic corpus callosum. The patient's skull and skin defects were treated non-surgically

The genetic basis of inherited anomalies of the teeth. Part 2: syndromes with significant dental involvement.

Teeth are specialized structural components of the craniofacial skeleton. Developmental defects occur either alone or in combination with other birth defects. In this paper, we review the dental anomalies in several multiple congenital anomaly (MCA) syndromes, in which the dental component is pivotal in the recognition of the phenotype and/or the molecular basis of the disorder is known. We will consider successively syndromic forms of amelogenesis imperfecta or enamel defects, dentinogenesis imperfecta (i.e. osteogenesis imperfecta) and other dentine anomalies. Focusing on dental aspects, we

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia in a child with the CHIME neuroectodermal dysplasia syndrome.

The "CHIME" syndrome (MIM#280000) is a rare neuroectodermal disorder comprised of Colobomas of the eye, Heart defects, Ichthyosiform dermatosis, Mental retardation, and Ear defects. We report on the sixth child with this syndrome and the first of these to develop acute lymphoblastic leukemia at age 4 1/2 years. Her major problems included a migratory ichthyosiform dermatosis, multiple skin infections and infestations, bilateral retinal coloboma, developmental delay, seizures, infantile macrosomia, facial anomalies, a duplicated renal collecting system, and conductive hearing loss. Histologic e

Aplasia cutis congenita associated with epidermolysis bullosa and pyloric atresia: the diagnostic role of prenatal ultrasonography.

Aplasia cutis congenita associated with epidermolysis bullosa and pyloric atresia is a rare congenital disease in which localized or widespread areas of skin are absent at birth. Alphafetoprotein (AFP) and skin biopsy have been used for prenatal diagnosis of this condition. A patient in whom normal levels of amniotic AFP at 16 weeks' gestation presumably excluded the disease and who was at risk for aplasia cutis congenita associated with epidermolysis bullosa and pyloric atresia is described. However, 10 weeks later, ultrasonographic examination revealed hydramnios, a dilated stomach, a deform

Overdentures in partial anodontia: simple solutions for complex problems.

Congenital defects in children and adolescents can present complex and challenging dental problems, including arch discrepancies, palatal defects, and malposed or otherwise disrupted dentition. Traditional treatment is often time-consuming, expensive, and in extensive defects, frequently compromised at best. The overdenture prosthesis, often overlooked, is a relatively simple and expedient solution to many of these severe problems, and the prosthetic techniques are familiar and readily employed by dentists without specialized training. This article reviews the general principles employed in th
