Adipose-derived stem cell sheet under an elastic patch improves cardiac function in rats after myocardial infarction.

OBJECTIVES: Although adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) have shown promise in cardiac regeneration, stable engraftment is still challenging. Acellular bioengineered cardiac patches have shown promise in positively altering ventricular remodeling in ischemic cardiomyopathy. We hypothesized that combining an ADSC sheet approach with a bioengineered patch would enhance ADSC engraftment and positively promote cardiac function compared with either therapy alone in a rat ischemic cardiomyopathy model. METHODS: Cardiac patches were generated from poly(ester carbonate urethane) urea and porcine decel

Pharyngeal dimensional changes in class II malocclusion treatment when using Forsus® or intermaxillary elastics - An exploratory study.

OBJECTIVE: Pharyngeal airway obstruction can facilitate some forms of sleep disorder breathing (SDB) in susceptible children, especially in those having class II malocclusion. Changes in the anatomic areas surrounding the pharyngeal region during orthodontic treatment could hypothetically impact the pharyngeal airway dimensions. Management of a class II malocclusion on a growing individual with either intermaxillary elastics or different removable or fixed class II appliance designs have been proposed over the last century. The objective of this retrospective exploratory cohort study is to inv

Influence of elastic lumbar support belts on trunk muscle function in patients with non-specific acute lumbar back pain.

BACKGROUND: A well-known supportive treatment for acute nonspecific back pain, elastic back support belts, are valued for their ability to accelerate natural self-healing, but there are concerns of a deconditioning effect due to their reliance on passive stabilization. METHODS: To evaluate the systematic effects of elastic abdominal belts on the trunk musculature, a total of 36 persons with acute lumbar back pain (no longer than one week) were divided into two groups: an abdominal belt wearing group (B) and a non-abdominal belt wearing control group (C). All were examined over a period of thr

Propagation-based phase-contrast synchrotron imaging of aortic dissection in mice: from individual elastic lamella to 3D analysis.

In order to show the advantage and potential of propagation-based phase-contrast synchrotron imaging in vascular pathology research, we analyzed aortic medial ruptures in BAPN/AngII-infused mice, a mouse model for aortic dissection. Ascending and thoraco-abdominal samples from n = 3 control animals and n = 10 BAPN/AngII-infused mice (after 3, 7 and 14 days of infusion, total of 24 samples) were scanned. A steep increase in the number of ruptures was already noted after 3 days of BAPN/AngII-infusion. The largest ruptures were found at the latest time points. 133 ruptures affected only the first

Effects of elastic band exercise on lean mass and physical capacity in older women with sarcopenic obesity: A randomized controlled trial.

Sarcopenia is associated with loss of muscle mass as well as an increased risk of physical disability in elderly people. This study was aimed to investigate the effect of elastic band resistance training (ERT) on muscle mass and physical function in older women with sarcopenic obesity. A randomized controlled trial with an intention-to-treat analysis was conducted. A total of 56 women (mean ± SD age 67.3 ± 5.1 years) were randomly assigned to the experimental group receiving 12 weeks of ERT and to the control group receiving no exercise intervention. Lean mass (measured using a dual-energy X-r

Effects of High Velocity Elastic Band versus Heavy Resistance Training on Hamstring Strength, Activation, and Sprint Running Performance.

Hamstring muscle injuries occur during high-speed activities, which suggests that muscular strength at high velocities may be more important than maximal strength. This study examined hamstring adaptations to training for maximal strength and for strength at high velocities. Physically active men (n = 25; age, 23.0 ± 3.2 years) were randomly divided into: (1) a resistance training (RT, n = 8) group, which performed high-load, low-velocity concentric-eccentric hamstring contractions; (2) a resistance training concentric (RTC; n = 9) group, which performed high-load, low-velocity concentric-only

Low complication rate of elastic stable intramedullary nailing (ESIN) of pediatric forearm fractures: A retrospective study of 202 cases.

Elastic stable intramedullary nailing (ESIN) has been established as state of the art treatment for forearm fractures in children, if operative stabilization is required. Their use has been expanded to single bone shaft fractures, and also more complex injuries such as Monteggia fractures or Monteggia-like lesions. A wide range of complications has been reported in the literature, up to 70% in certain investigations. The purpose of this study was to assess the complication rate after ESIN treatment of forearm fractures in children and adolescents in a representative cohort of patients from a l

Multiple-joint exercises using elastic resistance bands vs. conventional resistance-training equipment: A cross-over study.

Previous studies indicate that elastic resistance bands (ERB) can be a viable option to conventional resistance-training equipment (CRE) during single-joint resistance exercises, but their efficacy has not been established for several commonly used multiple-joint resistance exercises. Thus, we compared muscular activation levels in four popular multiple-joint exercises performed with ERB (TheraBand®) vs. CRE (Olympic barbell or cable pulley machines). In a cross-over design, men and women (n = 29) performed squats, stiff-legged deadlifts, unilateral rows and lateral pulldown using both modalit

Computational comparison of tibial diaphyseal fractures fixed with various degrees of prebending of titanium elastic nails and with and without end caps.

INTRODUCTION: Elastic stable intramedullary nailing (ESIN) is a treatment strategy for the management of diaphyseal long-bone fractures in adolescents and children, but few studies have investigated the mechanical stability of tibial diaphyseal fractures treated with various degrees of prebending of the elastic nails. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare the mechanical stability, including the gap deformation and nail dropping, of a tibia fracture with various fracture sites and fixed with various degrees of prebending of the elastic nails by the finite element method. Furthermore,

Slow Recovery of Weight Bearing After Stabilization of Long-Bone Fractures Using Elastic Stable Intramedullary Nails in Children.

Stabilization of diaphyseal long-bone fractures using elastic stable intramedullary nails (ESIN) in children promises early mobilization and rapid resumption of full weight bearing. We evaluated the duration of postoperative functional rehabilitation after ESIN, measured by the time from stabilization until first partial weight bearing, full weight bearing, and resumption of school sports. Fifty children with unstable, displaced fractures of the femur or lower leg treated with ESIN between 2002 and 2012 were included in this retrospective analysis. We classified fractures according to the pedi

Incidence and Risk Factors for Extensor Pollicis Longus Rupture in Elastic Stable Intramedullary Nailing of Pediatric Forearm Shaft Fractures.

BACKGROUND: Elastic stable intramedullary nailing (ESIN) is an effective means of fixation for unstable, pediatric forearm shaft fractures with the benefit of smaller incisions, less soft tissue manipulation, and ease of removal. This study was designed to evaluate the incidence of and risk factors for extensor pollicis longus (EPL) rupture after fixation of pediatric radial shaft fractures with ESIN. METHODS: A retrospective review of all patients younger than 19 years who had a repair of a forearm fracture with flexible intramedullary nailing between 2006 and 2011 was performed. Nineteen co

Narrow elastic disposable tourniquet (Hemaclear®) vs. traditional wide pneumatic tourniquet for creation or revision of hemodialysis angioaccesses.

PURPOSE: To choose the best arterial tourniquet for angioaccess surgery. METHODS: Preventive hemostasis with an arterial tourniquet prevents bleeding and provides better visualization. The surgeon may currently use a traditional wide nonsterile inflatable pneumatic cuff after exsanguination with an Esmarch bandage or a disposable sterile narrow elastic silicone ring (HemaClear®), available in different sizes according to the patient's limb circumference and blood pressure. RESULTS: The latter is easily rolled up the upper limb after surgical draping, to achieve exsanguination and occlusion o

The surgical stabilization of multiple rib fractures using titanium elastic nail in blunt chest trauma with acute respiratory failure.

BACKGROUND: Blunt chest injuries are usually combined with multiple rib fractures and severe lung contusions. This can occasionally induce acute respiratory failure and prolong ventilations. In order to reduce the periods of ventilator dependency, we propose a less invasive method of fixing multiple rib fractures. METHODS: Since October 2009, we have developed a new method to fix fractured ribs caused by blunt trauma. Rib fixations were performed using 2.0- or 2.5-mm intramedullary titanium elastic nails (TEN), with the help of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) and minimal thoracic

Rates of elastic compression stockings prescription following the diagnosis of deep venous thrombosis among Canadian emergency physicians and trainees.

UNLABELLED: Introduction Postthrombotic syndrome (PTS) is a complication of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) characterized by chronic pain, swelling, and heaviness, and may result in ulceration. Elastic compression stockings (ECS) worn daily after DVT have been shown to reduce the incidence and severity of PTS. The aim of our study was to investigate practices and perceptions of physicians regarding adjunct therapies to anticoagulation in patients diagnosed with lower extremity DVT. METHODS: A national online survey was conducted of Canadian emergency medicine staff physicians and residents (n=471)

Management of Displaced Radial Neck Fractures with Closed Technique using Titanium Elastic Nail and Review of Literature: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Injuries around the elbow are common in pediatric population. Amongst them, most common is fractures of the supracondylar part of humerus, followed by condylar fractures. Fractures of the neck of the radius account for five-ten percent of the total injuries. Various techniques for closed reduction of the fracture have been described in literature. Open reduction and fixation is indicated when closed reduction fails to provide satisfactory results and the angulation remains more than 45-60 degrees. CASE REPORT: We present two cases of severely displaced radial neck fractures trea
