Benign lytic lesions of the femoral neck: mid-term results of extended curettage and sartorius muscle pedicle bone grafting.

INTRODUCTION: Benign lytic lesions of bone encompass a group of neoplastic or developmental disorders of human skeleton. They may involve different sites with varied clinical presentation and pattern of aggressiveness for which the treatment strategy needs to be tailored accordingly. Planning a treatment protocol for a lytic lesion in the femoral neck is a matter of concern for the operating surgeon with due consideration to the risks involved. PATIENTS AND METHOD: This prospective study comprised of 16 patients (9 females and 7 males) with an average age of 23.37 years (range 14 to 35) who p

Type VII All-epiphyseal Fractures of the Lateral Malleolus and the Origin of Subfibular Ossicles.

BACKGROUND: A subfibular ossicle (SO), also known as an os subfibulare, is present in ∼1% of the general population. Two theories have been proposed to explain the origin of SOs: (1) as a failure of fusion of a secondary center of ossification; (2) as a posttraumatic sequela. This report offers prospective, longitudinal radiographic evidence for the formation of SOs as a posttraumatic sequela of type VII transepiphyseal fractures of the lateral malleolus in children. METHODS: This Institutional Review Board-approved study was performed at a tertiary care pediatric hospital from March 2012 to

Outcomes of free vascularized fibular flaps for the treatment of radiation-associated femoral nonunions.

INTRODUCTION: Nonunion is a known complication following fracture in the setting of radiotherapy. Free vascularized fibular (FVF) flaps have been used successfully in the treatment of segmental bone defects; however, their efficacy in the treatment of radiated nonunions is limited. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the outcome following FVFG for radiation-associated femoral fracture nonunions. METHODS: 23 (11 male and 12 female; mean age 60 ± 12 years) patients underwent FVF for radiation-associated femoral fracture nonunions. The most common indication for radiotherapy was soft tissue

Osteolytic changes accompanying degradation of absorbable fracture fixation implants.

We analysed the radiographs of 67 patients with displaced malleolar fractures treated by open reduction and internal fixation using absorbable polyglycolide rods. Seventeen patients developed a discharging inflammatory foreign-body reaction, a complication unique to these fixation devices. In 34 patients ovoid osteolytic foci, usually 5 to 10 mm in diameter, appeared within the implant channels six to 12 weeks after the operation. The same lesion occurred in 14 of the 17 patients who developed a foreign-body reaction, whereas only 20 out of the 50 patients with an uneventful course showed oste

A Retrospective analysis of peri-implant fractures: insights from a large volume clinical Study.

PURPOSE: Peri-implant fractures (PIFs) are a concept in evolution for which different diagnostic criteria have been proposed and modified over time. They have not been extensively reported. PIFs are usually located in the distal part of previous osteosynthesis, where fragile bone is in contact with the rigid implant and are a significant complication after orthopaedic surgery, which requires careful management and treatment. This clinical study presents findings from a retrospective analysis of PIF's, providing description of characteristics and outcomes. They provide information about the ass

Use of Vascularized Myo-Osseous Fibula Free Flap to Reconstruct a Hemimandibular Defect With a Concomitant Skull Defect Arising From Stock Condylar Prosthesis Displacement Into the Middle Cranial Fossa.

Functional reconstruction of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a controversial topic among oral and maxillofacial surgeons; this controversy becomes more complicated when one dives into the dilemma of the ideal reconstructive modality. TMJ defects might result from various etiologies, such as blunt or penetrating traumatic injuries, advanced degenerative joint disease, or various pathologic conditions, including benign and malignant conditions, that might arise from the TMJ or adjacent tissues. Reconstruction of the TMJ is vital because of its essential function in mastication, articulation
