Neighborhood Socioeconomic Disadvantage and the Neurobiology of Uncertainty in Traumatically Injured Adults.

BACKGROUND: Individuals residing in more socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhoods experience greater uncertainty through insecurity of basic needs such as food, employment, and housing, compared with more advantaged neighborhoods. Although the neurobiology of uncertainty has been less frequently examined in relation to neighborhood disadvantage, there is evidence that neighborhood disadvantage is associated with widespread neural alterations. METHODS: Recently traumatically injured participants (n = 90) completed a picture anticipation task in the magnetic resonance imaging scanner, in w

"It's not just injecting drugs": Supervised consumption sites and the social determinants of health.

BACKGROUND: People who inject drugs are highly vulnerable to social determinants of health (SDOH) inequities, such as homelessness, food insecurity, lack of social support, and poor access to healthcare. Supervised consumption sites (SCSs) have been developed to reduce harms associated with injection drug use but their social impacts remain largely unknown. This study explored service users' experiences with SCSs and how their service use affected their SDOH. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive study design was used. Participants were recruited from an SCS in Ottawa, Canada. Data were collecte…

Racial and ethnic differences in the prevalence of adverse childhood experiences: Findings from a low-income sample of U.S. women.

Despite great interest in adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), there has been limited research on racial and ethnic differences in their pr … sed to create a composite ACE score. Five other potential childhood adversities were also assessed: food insecurity, homelessness, prolonged parental absence, peer victimization, and violent crime victimization. Results from bivariate and multivariate analyses revealed that, while rates of adversity were high overall, there were significant racial/ethnic differen …

Effectiveness of Community-Led Complementary Feeding and Learning Sessions on Child Diet and Nutritional Status in Oromia, Ethiopia: A Quasi-experimental Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity and child undernutrition remain critical challenges in Ethiopia. Recent humanitarian financing reductions have increased interest in low-cost, scalable approaches for preventing acute malnutrition before treatment is required. To prevent acute malnutrition, the community-led complementary feeding and learning sessions (CCFLS) approach targets children at risk of wasting through nutrition education, behavior change, and promotion of locally available foods. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to assess the effectiveness of CCFLS on improving child feeding practices and redu…

Metacognitive Interpersonal Therapy - Eating Disorders (MIT-ED) in the Case of an 18-Year-Old Girl With Avoidant and Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorders, Binge Eating Disorder and Obesity.

Personality disorders (PD) in adolescents are a significant risk factor in the development and maintenance of eating disorders (ED). Comorbid PD and ED can influence each other and significantly impact on the young person's well-being, worsening interpersonal relationships and social functioning. Patients with ED often use coping mechanisms related to food and body shape as maladaptive attempts to manage PD-related problems, like negative ideas about self and others. We describe the case of an 18-year-old adolescent presenting with binge eating disorder (BED), stage I obesity, and Avoidant and

Edible caterpillars (Gonimbrasia belina and Gynanisa maja) as emerging source of nutrients and bioactive compounds.

Globally, despite the commercial and cultural importance of edible caterpillars (Gynanisa maja and Gonimbrasia belina), comprehensive information on their dietary and therapeutic benefits has not been fully explored. The study was aimed at evaluating the nutritional composition and bioactive compounds profile of two important edible caterpillars (Gonimbrasia belina and Gynanisa maja) in Africa. Our results demonstrated that G. belina and G. maja are capable of amplifying host plant protein (17 %) by 4.3-folds [72.8 %] and 3.6-folds [61.3 %], respectively. Lysine (32.6 mg/g), methionine (12.5-2
