Metal pollution levels in estuarine and coastal environments have been widely reported, but few documented reports exist of severe contamination in specific environments. Here, we report on a metal-contaminated estuary in Fujian Province, China, in which blue oysters (Crassostrea hongkongensis) and green oysters (Crassostrea angulata) were discovered to be contaminated with Cu and other metals. This study presents results of the application of two-one-dimensional/dynamic-deterministic models developed to evaluate and predict mercury contamination of a lowland river, the River Yare, Norfolk, UK. Strain AM105 was separated from mangrove sediment in the South China Sea in this research. The morphological and genomic data showed that the strain merits description as a novel species, proposed as Micromonospora rifamycinica. From the acetate ethyl extract of its fermentation broth, two antibiotics against Gram-positive bacteria (including MRSA), rifamycin S and its geometric isomer were isolated. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic analyzes. (1)H and (13)C NMR data of the isomer of rifamycin S were first described in this paper.

The mineralogical and elemental compositions of the martian soil are indicators of chemical and physical weathering processes. Using data from the Mars Exploration Rovers, we show that bright dust deposits on opposite sides of the planet are part of a global unit and not dominated by the composition of local rocks. Sorption interactions of three high-use tetracycline antibiotics (oxytetracycline, chlortetracycline, tetracycline) with montmorillonite and kaolinite clays were investigated undervaried pH and ionic strength conditions. Non-viable eggs of Morelet's crocodile (Crocodylus moreletii) were collected from Gold Button (GBL) and New River lagoons (NRL) in northern Belize and screened for organochlorine (OC) compounds using gas chromatography (GC) with electron capture detection (ECD). Mercury and other heavy metals have been monitored in the surface sediments of the Mersey Estuary in NW England for a period of 25 years, using a consistent methodology and sampling grid. This has produced one of the most comprehensive data sets available in the literature and demonstrated some of the difficulties associated with undertaking long-term environmental monitoring.
