Knowledge and attitude of college students towards cannabis use in urban India: A comparative perspective of users and non-users.

Background We aimed to assess the knowledge and attitude about cannabis use among college students in India, compare the perspective among users and non-users and lay a framework for development of effective primary prevention strategies in future. Methods This cross-sectional study was done in different colleges of Mumbai. Two hundred and sixty students of both sexes aged between 18 and 25 years were selected by systematic random sampling. Participants had to fill a sociodemographic questionnaire and a self-administered questionnaire that was analysed using the Statistical Package for the Soc

Maladaptive defense mechanisms moderate treatment outcome in 6 months versus 12 months dialectical-behavior therapy for borderline personality disorder.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated whether defense mechanisms in patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) predict treatment response of dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and whether they moderate outcome in different treatment lengths. METHOD: We analyzed a subsample of 60 outpatients with BPD, randomized into either 6 (n = 30) or 12 (n = 30) months of DBT. The average level of defensive adaptiveness, assessed with observer-rated overall defensive functioning (ODF) and "immature" (i.e., maladaptive) defenses were used as predictors and moderators of self-reported frequency of self-harm. 'It brings light to what you really put into your body': a focus group study of reactions to messages about nicotine reduction in cigarettes.

OBJECTIVE: In 2017, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a proposed regulation to lower nicotine in cigarettes to minimally addictive levels to help smokers quit. We sought to explore effective message strategies communicating about nicotine reduction in cigarettes across the different key audiences that the regulation is most likely to influence. METHODS: We designed four types of messages: efficacy messages, risk messages, a message about alternative sources of nicotine and a compensation message. Sixteen virtual focus groups were conducted in Atlanta and San Francisco in Apr

Development and field testing of new tools to monitor and evaluate harms of continuing and discontinuing long-term opioid therapy.

Healthcare providers lack brief tools to monitor a broad range of harms related to long-term opioid therapy (LTOT) and to assess whether opioid tapering may be risky or difficult to initiate. We developed and field-tested 2 integrated tools to support clinical decision making around opioid continuation and tapering: Screen to Evaluate and Treat (SET) 1 and 2. SET1 assesses whether LTOT may be harmful to continue, and SET2 assesses whether an opioid taper may be difficult or harmful to initiate. Tool development included literature reviews to identify candidate items, refinement of item pools,

Pharmacovigilance in hospice/palliative care: net effect of pregabalin for neuropathic pain.

INTRODUCTION: Real-world effectiveness of many medications has been poorly researched, including in hospice/palliative care. Directly extrapolating findings from other clinical settings may not yield robust clinical advice. Pharmacovigilance studies provide an opportunity to understand better the net impact of medications. The study aimed to examine immediate and short-term benefits and harms of pregabalin in routine practice for neuropathic pain in hospice/palliative care. METHODS: A consecutive cohort of 155 patients from 62 centres in 5 countries was started on pregabalin and studied prosp

World Health Organization risk drinking level reductions as treatment outcomes in PTSD and substance use disorder trials.

OBJECTIVE: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) clinical trials have traditionally prioritized abstinence, and more recently, heavy drinking cessation as primary treatment endpoints. Reductions in World Health Organization (WHO) risk drinking levels may offer a viable harm reduction-aligned alternative. Despite evidence supporting WHO risk level reductions as meaningful indicators of AUD treatment response, their utility in individuals with co-occurring posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) remains unknown. The present study compared 1- and 2-level WHO risk drinking reductions with abstinence and heavy d…

Cardiovascular Nursing: From Florence to Melbourne.

This paper, based on the 2015 CSANZ Cardiovascular Nursing Lecture, takes its title from the invitation to give this lecture in Melbourne being received when the author was visiting Florence, after whom Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, is named. Her work has indirectly shaped and influenced cardiovascular nursing, which has developed over the past 50 years. Despite its relatively short history, cardiovascular nursing has made a major contribution to improving the cardiovascular health and well-being of patients and families through health promotion, risk reduction and disea

Female genital mutilation in the era of medicalization: A growing threat to global elimination efforts.

Female genital mutilation (FGM) remains a major global public health and human rights concern, with recent evidence highlighting a concerning shift toward medicalization. The involvement of health workers in performing FGM creates a false perception of safety, reinforces social acceptance, and threatens progress toward global elimination. This article discusses the drivers and consequences of medicalized FGM, including social pressures, misconceptions of harm reduction, weak enforcement, and professional ethical challenges. Although medicalization is sometimes promoted as a safer alternative, …

Severe floods increase long-term opioid overdose mortality.

The relationship between climate disasters and substance use-related harms has been understudied. This study employed a mixed methods resear … this increase in overdose mortality was perpetuated by decreased access to treatment, recovery, and harm reduction services; increased trauma; increased instability; and persistent stigma around help-seeking. Due to the predicted continuation of these disasters, understanding their impact on substance use-related harms is essential to mitigating future damage.

Formal and informal organizational activities of people who inject drugs in New York City: description and correlates.

Little is known about group memberships of people who inject drugs (PWID). Three hundred PWID were interviewed about formal and informal group participation and risk behaviors. Many took part in groups related to problems and resources associated with injecting drugs, religion, sports or gender. Harm reduction group and support group participation was associated with less risk behavior; sports groups participation with more risk behavior. Group involvement by PWID may be important to their lives and/or affect prevention or infectious disease transmission. More research is needed about determin…

Screening embryos for polygenic disease risk: a review of epidemiological, clinical, and ethical considerations.

BACKGROUND: The genetic composition of embryos generated by in vitro fertilization (IVF) can be examined with preimplantation genetic testing (PGT). Until recently, PGT was limited to detecting single-gene, high-risk pathogenic variants, large structural variants, and aneuploidy. Recent advances have made genome-wide genotyping of IVF embryos feasible and affordable, raising the possibility of screening embryos for their risk of polygenic diseases such as breast cancer, hypertension, diabetes, or schizophrenia. Despite a heated debate around this new technology, called polygenic embryo screeni

Health Promotion and Support Grounded in Interconnected Influences on Alcohol Use in Pregnancy.

There are a range of factors that influence alcohol use in pregnancy and create risk of fetal harm. However, limited research has articulated the multilevel nature of these influences and their entanglement. The purpose of this narrative review is to analyze the types of factors that influence alcohol use and consider what factors need to be addressed in future health promotion and intervention efforts. Six databases were searched using EBSCOhost articles published between January and December 2023 on alcohol use in pregnancy and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) prevention. English-langu
