Argon laser-assisted treatment of benign eyelid lesions.

We investigated the treatment of benign eyelid lesions with argon laser as an alternative therapy to surgical excision. The charts of 73 pat … in during laser application. All wounds epithelialized in 3-4 weeks with skin that appeared normal. Hypopigmentation of the treated areas were observed in three cases. No recurrence occurred during the follow-up period. Argon laser-assisted benign eyelid tumor excision is a useful, cheap, accessible, and well-tolerated alternative to traditional surgery.

Mosaic trisomy 18 in a five-month-old infant.

Individuals with mosaic trisomy 18, only approximately 5% of all trisomy 18 cases, carry both a trisomy 18 and an euploid cell line. Their clinical findings are highly variable, from the absence of dysmorphic features to the complete trisomy 18 syndrome. A five-month-old daughter of a 38-year-old mother, with vomiting and feeding problems, was referred to our department. She was undernourished and had axial hypotony and developmental delay, an irregular pattern of hypopigmentation on the right side of the abdomen, and moderate sagittal body asymmetry with left-side muscular hemihypotrophy. Mil…

Mapping of the domestic cat "SILVER" coat color locus identifies a unique genomic location for silver in mammals.

The SILVER locus has been mapped in the domestic cat, identifying a unique genomic location distinct from that of any known reported gene associated with silver or hypopigmentation in mammals. A demonstrated lack of linkage to SILV, the strong candidate gene for silver, led to the initiation of a genome scan utilizing 2 pedigrees segregating for silver coat color. Linkage mapping defined a genomic region for SILVER as a 3.3-Mb region, (95.87-99.21 Mb) on chromosome D2, (peak logarithm of the odds = 10.5, = 0), which displays conserved synteny to a genomic interval between 118.58 and 121.85 Mb …

Treatment of Becker's nevi with a long-pulse alexandrite laser.

BACKGROUND: Becker's nevus (BN) can be a distressing cosmetic handicap for patients and a treatment challenge for physicians. Various treatm … fair responses. Hair density simultaneously decreased with treatment in all patients. Although mild hypopigmentation was observed in some patients, and partial hypertrophic scarring was observed in one patient, the outcomes were cosmetically acceptable. No repigmentation was noted during the follow-up period. CONCLUSION: A long-pulsed alexandrite laser without cr …

Onchocerciasis--river blindness.

Onchocerciasis results from infestation by the nematode Onchocerca volvulus and is characterized by troublesome itching, skin lesions, and eye manifestations. Although partially controlled by international mass prevention programs, onchocerciasis remains a major health hazard and is endemic in Africa, Arabia, and the Americas. Onchocerciasis is spread by bites from infested black flies, which transmit larvae that subsequently develop into adult filariae. Skin symptoms are commonly nonspecific and include severe pruritus, acute and chronic dermatitis, vitiligo-like hypopigmentation, and atrophy…

Pigmentary mosaicism following the lines of Blaschko in a girl with a double aneuploidy mosaicism: (47,XX,+7/45,X).

We report on a 6-year-old girl with linear streaks of apparent hypopigmentation and hyperpigmentation following the Blaschko lines, growth retardation, bupthalmos of the left eye, and mild mental retardation. She had a 45,X karyotype in lymphocytes. In cultured fibroblasts a double aneuploidy mosaicism was detected, consisting of a cell line with trisomy for chromosome 7 and a cell line with monosomy for the X-chromosome and no cell line with a normal karyotype. Cutis tricolor or three levels of pigmentation in different skin areas suggested presence of a third, probably normal cell line. Doub…

Propionibacterium acnes and the pathogenesis of progressive macular hypomelanosis.

BACKGROUND: Progressive macular hypomelanosis is a common hypopigmentation mainly on the central parts of the trunk, predominantly in young adults, especially women. It is often mistaken for pityriasis versicolor and pityriasis alba. It occurs in all races and has been described in many parts of the world. We discovered follicular red fluorescence restricted to lesional skin. We suspected a relation with a porphyrin-producing bacteria residing in sebum of the pilosebaceous duct, and we therefore performed a study in 8 patients. Observation In all biopsy specimens taken from lesional skin of 8 …

Novel nonsense mutation of the endothelin-B receptor gene in a family with Waardenburg-Hirschsprung disease.

Waardenburg syndrome (WS) comprises sensorineural hearing loss, hypopigmentation of skin and hair, and pigmentary disturbances of the irides. Four types of WS have been classified to date; in WS type IV (WS4), patients additionally have colonic aganglionosis (Hirschsprung disease, HSCR). Mutations in the endothelin-3 (EDN3), endothelin-B receptor (EDNRB), and Sox10 genes have been identified as causative for WS type IV. We screened a family with a combined WS-HSCR phenotype for mutations in the EDNRB locus using standard DNA mutation analysis and sequencing techniques. We have identified a nov…

Xanthelasma palpebrarum: treatment with the ultrapulsed CO2 laser.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Due to its delicate location near the eye and the high recurrence rate, the therapy of xanthelasma palpebrarum is … laser treatment. As for side effects, only transient pigmental changes (4% hyperpigmentations, 13% hypopigmentations) and no visible scarring was observed. Three patients (13%) developed a recurrence of xanthelasma. CONCLUSIONS: The ultrapulsed CO2 laser is an effective and safe therapeutic alternative to the hitherto described approaches.

Mosaic loss of 15q11q13 in a patient with hypomelanosis of Ito: is there a role for the P gene?

We report a patient with mental retardation, behavioral disturbances, and pigmentary anomalies, consistent with the phenotype of hypomelanos … 13. Loss of this locus is believed to be associated with abnormalities of pigmentation, such as the hypopigmentation seen in patients with deletions of 15q11q13, and the Prader-Willi and Angelman syndromes. Mutations within the P gene have also been associated with tyrosinase-positive (type II) oculocutaneous albinism. Using fluorescence in situ hybridization, we …

Infantile sialic acid storage disease (ISSD). Report on first case in Czech Republic with biopsy and autopsy findings.

The first case of infantile sialic acid storage disease in Czech Republic is presented in a four-and-half year-old girl. The clinical phenotype consisted of moderate hepatosplenomegaly and skin hypopigmentation, early psychomotoric and developmental arrest, associated with truncal ataxia and lower extremities spasticity, extinguished acoustic and visual perception (optic atrophy without macular alteration) and remarkable automutilation phenomena. The appearance was normosomatic and there were minimal dysostotic changes. Skin and liver biopsy displayed moderate amount of lucent storage lysosome…

New variant in KITLG shapes the pathogenesis of familial progressive hyper- and hypo-pigmentation.

Familial progressive hyper- and hypo-pigmentation (FPHH) is a pigmentary disorder characterized by a mixture of hypo- and hyper-pigmentation lesions, brown spots, and hypo-pigmentation gray leaf spots. This disease had previously been reported to be associated with the KITLG gene. In this study, whole exome sequencing was performed to identify the gene mutation in two patients suspected with FPHH. Functional changes were explored at a cellular level with the help of adenine base editors, and the differentially expressed genes in the melanin pathway were detected through RNA-sequencing. Mutatio

Monogenic causes of pigmentary mosaicism.

Pigmentary mosaicism of the Ito type, also known as hypomelanosis of Ito, is a neurocutaneous syndrome considered to be predominantly caused by somatic chromosomal mosaicism. However, a few monogenic causes of pigmentary mosaicism have been recently reported. Eleven unrelated individuals with pigmentary mosaicism (mostly hypopigmented skin) were recruited for this study. Skin punch biopsies of the probands and trio-based blood samples (from probands and both biological parents) were collected, and genomic DNA was extracted and analyzed by exome sequencing. In all patients, plausible monogenic
