A comparison of digitized frozen section and smear preparations for intraoperative neurotelepathology.

BACKGROUND: Intraoperative consultations in neuropathology are often assessed by smear preparations rather than by frozen sections. Both techniques are standard practice for light microscopic examination on site, but there is little data comparing these techniques in a telepathology setting. METHODS: Thirty cases of brain tumours submitted for intraoperative consultation at our institution between July and December 2010 were identified in which both frozen section and tissue smear preparations were available for digitization at 20× magnification. Slides were digitized using a Hamamatsu Nanozo

Cor triatriatum dexter assessed by three-dimensional echocardiography reconstruction in two adult patients.

Cor triatriatum dexter is a rare congenital anomaly caused by persistence of the right valve of the embryonic sinus venosus, and this results in septation of the right atrium. Three-dimensional echocardiography is a novel technique that can be used to identify and characterize this entity. Here, we report two women with cor triatriatum dexter.

Imaging the neonatal heart--essentials for the radiologist.

Modern radiological imaging provides precise diagnosis in congenital heart disease (CHD). The most important and readily available radiological examination is still chest radiography. The diagnostically most important imaging method is echocardiography. Magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography have gained much ground over the more invasive cardiac catheter angiography, which is still needed in more complex conditions and for interventional procedures, which are performed more frequently. This article is focused on imaging of the neonatal heart. Basically, characteristics of the chest

Triploidy in rainbow trout determined by computer-assisted analysis.

This study was designed to assess the use of a computer-assisted system based on erythrocyte measurements as a possible alternative to flow cytometry for identifying triploid rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Blood smears were prepared from 26 triploid and 26 diploid specimens, as determined by flow cytometry after staining blood cells with propidium iodide. The cell and nucleus lengths of 10 erythrocytes were determined in each fish. This was followed by discriminatory analysis to distinguish between diploids and triploids based on their score profiles. Triploid trout showed significantly

Mathematical model for pre-operative planning of linear and closing-wedge metatarsal osteotomies for the correction of hallux valgus.

First-metatarsal osteotomy is performed for an abnormal intermetatarsal angle and severe hallux valgus deformity. The metatarsal head is slid along the osteotomy and fixed with a Kirschner wire to achieve angular and linear realignment with respect to the other metatarsals. When reduction of joint subluxation is also sought, a bone wedge is removed. A mathematical model and a corresponding computer-based tool were developed for pre-operative planning of the optimum surgical solution. Standard intermetatarsal angle correction, head-to-sesamoids re-alignment, joint subluxation reduction and meta

Improved determination of breast cancer size in mammography.

Breast cancer size determination in a preoperative stage is of great importance, as it is taking into account the classification of the tumour. In this paper a simple method of the improved determination of the actual tumour size is presented. The method is based on the calculation of correction factors taking into account the magnification of the tumour image during the mammographic examination. The method was applied for evaluation on forty cases of breast cancer. In all cases the final approximation of tumour maximum diameter with the presented method is almost equal to this obtained from t

ThyFusionNet: A CNN-transformer framework with spatial aware sparse attention for multi modal thyroid disease diagnosis.

In medical image analysis, accurately diagnosing complex lesions remains a formidable challenge, especially for thyroid disorders, which exhibit high incidence and intricate pathology. To enhance diagnostic precision and robustness, we assembled ThyM3, a large-scale multimodal dataset comprising thyroid computed tomography and ultrasound images. Building on this resource, we introduce ThyFusionNet, a novel deep-learning architecture that combines convolutional backbones with transformer modules and performs feature-level fusion to exploit complementary cues across modalities. To improve semant

The negative sigmoid loss for controlling false positive rate in osteolytic lesion segmentation.

Multiple Myeloma (MM) is a malignancy that is commonly associated with the development of osteolytic lesions. To support MM diagnosis, low-dose Computed Tomography (CT) is commonly used for lesion localization, but manually evaluating CT scans can be time-consuming and prone to error. Although deep learning methods have delivered promising results in supporting lesion detection, they are likely to produce false positive findings, hindering their usability in clinical practice. To address this, we trained a 2D U-Net on annotated lesions (positive patches) in combination with images of bone tiss

DeepOptimalNet: optimized deep learning model for early diagnosis of pancreatic tumor classification in CT imaging.

Computed Tomography (CT) imaging captures detailed cross-sectional images of the pancreas and surrounding structures and provides valuable information for medical professionals. The classification of pancreatic CT images presents significant challenges due to the complexities of pancreatic diseases, especially pancreatic cancer. These challenges include subtle variations in tumor characteristics, irregular tumor shapes, and intricate imaging features that hinder accurate and early diagnosis. Image noise and variations in image quality also complicate the analysis. To address these classificati

Acquisition and Reconstruction Techniques for Coronary CT Angiography: Current Status and Trends over the Past Decade.

Coronary CT angiography (CCTA) has been widely used as a noninvasive modality for accurate assessment of coronary artery disease (CAD) in clinical settings. However, the following limitations of CCTA remain issues of interest: motion, stair-step, and blooming artifacts; suboptimal image noise; ionizing radiation exposure; administration of contrast medium; and complex imaging workflow. Various acquisition and reconstruction techniques have been introduced over the past decade to overcome these limitations. Low-tube-voltage acquisition using a high-output x-ray tube can reasonably reduce the co

ProtoASNet: Comprehensive evaluation and enhanced performance with uncertainty estimation for aortic stenosis classification in echocardiography.

Aortic stenosis (AS) is a prevalent heart valve disease that requires accurate and timely diagnosis for effective treatment. Current methods for automated AS severity classification rely on black-box deep learning techniques, which suffer from a low level of trustworthiness and hinder clinical adoption. To tackle this challenge, we propose ProtoASNet, a prototype-based neural network designed to classify the severity of AS from B-mode echocardiography videos. ProtoASNet bases its predictions exclusively on the similarity scores between the input and a set of learned spatio-temporal prototypes,

Leveraging Vision Transformers in Multimodal Models for Retinal OCT Analysis.

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) has become an indispensable imaging modality in ophthalmology, providing high-resolution cross-sectional images of the retina. Accurate classification of OCT images is crucial for diagnosing retinal diseases such as Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and Diabetic Macular Edema (DME). This study explores the efficacy of various deep learning models, including convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and Vision Transformers (ViTs), in classifying OCT images. We also investigate the impact of integrating metadata (patient age, sex, eye laterality, and year) into

The Development and Evaluation of a Convolutional Neural Network for Cutaneous Melanoma Detection in Whole Slide Images.

CONTEXT.—: The current melanoma staging system does not account for 26% of the variance seen in melanoma-specific survival, therefore our ability to predict patient outcome is not fully elucidated. Morphology may be of greater significance than in other solid tumors, with Breslow thickness remaining the strongest prognostic indicator despite being subject to high levels of interobserver variation. The application of convolutional neural networks to whole slide images affords objective morphologic metrics, which may reveal new insights into patient prognosis. OBJECTIVE.—: To develop and evalua

Deep Rib Fracture Instance Segmentation and Classification From CT on the RibFrac Challenge.

Rib fractures are a common and potentially severe injury that can be challenging and labor-intensive to detect in CT scans. While there have been efforts to address this field, the lack of large-scale annotated datasets and evaluation benchmarks has hindered the development and validation of deep learning algorithms. To address this issue, the RibFrac Challenge was introduced, providing a benchmark dataset of over 5,000 rib fractures from 660 CT scans, with voxel-level instance mask annotations and diagnosis labels for four clinical categories (buckle, nondisplaced, displaced, or segmental). A Neural Network for Segmenting Tumours in Ultrasound Rectal Images.

Ultrasound imaging is the most cost-effective approach for the early detection of rectal cancer, which is a high-risk cancer. Our goal was to design an effective method that can accurately identify and segment rectal tumours in ultrasound images, thereby facilitating rectal cancer diagnoses for physicians. This would allow physicians to devote more time to determining whether the tumour is benign or malignant and whether it has metastasized rather than merely confirming its presence. Data originated from the Sichuan Province Cancer Hospital. The test, training, and validation sets were compose
