Dihydroxyphenylalanine (dopa), the metabolic precursor of dopamine, was administered to 10 parkinsonian patients in oral doses of 1-5 g. and intravenous doses of 0.2-0.5 g. Increases in dopamine excretion of 100- to 1000-fold following the dopa administration indicated that dopa was being absorbed and metabolized. Only two of the 10 patients showed any objective improvement on this treatment. Snake envenomation, a neglected tropical disease, presents complex and species-dependent systemic pathophysiology. Here, we conduct an integrated proteomic and in vivo toxicological assessment of venoms from ten medically significant Chinese snakes. HISTORY: A 32-year-old woman was admitted to the emergency department because of acute dyspnea and syncope. A few minutes before the onset of symptoms, she had self-administered an intravenous injection of one gram of heroin combined with grinded flunitrazepam tablets.
INVESTIGATIONS: Signs of acute cor pulmonale were detected on transthoracic echocardiography despite lack of pulmonary embolism in computed tomography. It was assumed that microembolisms were the cause of acute pulmonary hypertension after intravenous injection of heroin and flunitrazepam.

Twenty-three pigs, 1-3 mo of age, were fitted variously with intraperitoneal, intrajugular, intraportal, and intraduodenal catheters. After a 4-h fast, porcine cholecystokinin (CCK), 5-40 Ivy dog units/kg body wt (IDU/kg); caerulein, 0.25-2 micrograms/kg; or the octapeptide of cholecystokinin (CCK-OP), 5-40 IDU/kg, was given parenterally; or 2-5% sodium oleate or 5% protein hydrolysate (5 ml/kg) was injected intraduodenally. Pelleted feed intake was then measured for 10 min. Food intake was depressed in a dose-related fashion in all instances as compared to after 0.9% NaCl control injections.
