Finding Wolbachia in Filarial larvae and Culicidae Mosquitoes in Upper Egypt Governorate.

Wolbachia is an obligatory intracellular endosymbiotic bacterium, present in over 20% of all insects altering insect reproductive capabilities and in a wide range of filarial worms which is essential for worm survival and reproduction. In Egypt, no available data were found about Wolbachia searching for it in either mosquitoes or filarial worms. Thus, we aimed to identify the possible concurrent presence of Wolbachia within different mosquitoes and filarial parasites, in Assiut Governorate, Egypt using multiplex PCR. Initially, 6 pools were detected positive for Wolbachia by single PCR. The si

Development of wiring specificity in the olfactory system.

The olfactory system discriminates a large number of odorants using precisely wired neural circuits. It offers an excellent opportunity to study mechanisms of neuronal wiring specificity at the single synapse level. Each olfactory receptor neuron typically expresses only one olfactory receptor from many receptor genes (1000 in mice). In mice, this striking singularity appears to be ensured by a negative feedback mechanism. Olfactory receptor neurons expressing the same receptor converge their axons to stereotypical positions with high precision, a feature that is conserved from insects to mamm

Mycoviruses: Environmental Variables, Vector-Mediated Transmission and Use as a Biocontrol.

Mycoviruses, or fungal viruses, are widespread throughout the fungal kingdom. This study aimed to identify environmental factors associated with mycoviruses, explore their transmission mechanisms, including vector-mediated transmission, and assess their potential practical applications. A systematic, retrospective, and cross-sectional bibliographic review was conducted. These viruses are closely linked to their fungal hosts, thus developing a symbiotic relationship. Among environmental variables, temperature appears to play a more significant role in limiting fungal virulence than other factor

Identification and evaluation of two testis-specific serine/threonine kinase genes from multi-tissue transcriptomes as potential genetic targets of sterile insect technique in Zeugodacus tau.

BACKGROUND: Zeugodacus tau (Walker) is a notorious agricultural pest causing significant economic losses in vegetable production for many years. Sterile insect technique (SIT) has emerged as an environmentally sustainable pest management strategy. However, discovery of molecular targets applicable for SIT implementation in Z. tau still constitutes a significant research gap. RESULTS: We conducted comparative transcriptome analysis of four male tissues (midgut, Malpighian tubules, fat body, and testis), identifying 9653 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) with predominant testis enrichment.

The effectiveness of long-lasting spatial repellent emanators against malaria in humanitarian crisis settings in northern Nigeria: a two-arm pragmatic, open-label, controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: In 2025, the UN estimated that 305 million people would need humanitarian aid, and by 2030, two-thirds of the poorest populations will reside in areas of fragility, conflict, and violence. When individuals are forcibly displaced into malaria endemic areas, the risk of severe disease and mortality can be high. Novel vector control tools suited to the emergency context, for which conventional interventions suffer from biological and operational limitations, are urgently needed to interrupt vector-borne disease transmission among the world's most vulnerable. This study aimed to evalua

Repellency and toxicity of long-lasting insecticide-treated bed nets (LLINs) to bed bugs.

Vector control is essential for eliminating malaria, a vector-borne parasitic disease responsible for over half a million deaths annually. Success of vector control programs hinges on community acceptance of products like long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs). Communities in malaria-endemic regions often link LLIN efficacy to their ability to control indoor pests such as bed bugs (Cimex lectularius L. and Cimex hemipterus (F.)) (Hemiptera: Cimicidae). Despite this, little is known about the potential repellent effects and toxicity of LLINs to bed bugs. Herein, we demonstrate for the fi

An approach for ambrosia beetle (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) management: can low-cost detectors effectively identify ethanol emissions in flood-stressed trees?

Ambrosia beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) are small fungus-farming beetles that damage stressed nursery trees directly through tunneling and structural weakening, and indirectly by introducing pathogenic fungi. Stressed trees emit ethanol, which is the primary host-locating cue for ambrosia beetles. This study evaluated the efficacy of low-cost ethanol detectors as a solution for the early detection of flood-stressed trees susceptible to ambrosia beetle infestation. Experiments were conducted using 48 native dogwoods (Cornus florida L.) subjected to flooded or non-flooded condit

Practical resistance to spinosad in an onion maggot (Diptera: Anthomyiidae) population in New York.

Onion maggot, Delia antiqua (Meigen), is a significant constraint on onion production across the temperate regions of North America. Early season infestations can reduce plant stands up to 75% if untreated. Effective management of D. antiqua has historically relied on insecticide seed treatments, with spinosad being among the most commonly used options. However, declining control efficacy observed on a New York onion farm over several years raised concerns about the potential development of insecticide resistance. The purpose of this research was to (i) evaluate the efficacy of spinosad seed t

Field evaluation of ethnomedicinal plants' smoke knockdown and repellent efficacy against pre-bedtime biting malaria vectors in Mazowe district, Zimbabwe.

The study investigated the knockdown and repellent efficacy of smoke from native plants, Vitex payos (Lour.) Merr., Peltophorum africanum Sond., and Adansonia digitata L., against malaria vectors in Bare ward, Mazowe district, Zimbabwe. Three to five-day-old An. gambiae sensu lato (s.l.) were exposed to smoke from the three plants over 150 minutes during knockdown tests. Mortality was scored after 24 hours. A randomized 4 x 4 Latin square design was used to assign plant smoke and control treatments to huts and nights during repellency tests. Repellency was estimated as percentage reduction in

Exploring the impact of a chemical disinfectant and an antiviral drug for RNA virus management in the Mediterranean fruit fly mass-rearing.

The Mediterranean fruit fly is an agricultural pest of a wide variety of fruit crops. An effective method to counteract them in the field is through the application of the sterile insect technique, which requires the mass-production of sterile males. The presence of pathogens, and specifically viruses, threatens the well-being of mass-reared insects generating an interest on the development of strategies for viral elimination or containment. Thirteen RNA viruses have been described in the medfly although so far only one of them, Ceratitis capitata nora virus, has been associated with detriment

Methyl salicylate improves the effectiveness of the odor-baited trap tree approach for adult plum curculio, Conotrachelus nenuphar (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), monitoring and attract-and-kill.

In commercial apple orchards, the odor-baited trap tree approach involving the synergistic lure composed of benzaldehyde (BEN) and the PC aggregation pheromone grandisoic acid (GA) serves as an effective monitoring tool as well as an attract-and-kill strategy for plum curculio (PC), Conotrachelus nenuphar Herbst. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), management. However, the relatively high cost of the lure and the degradation of commercial BEN lures by UV light and heat discourage its adoption by growers. Over a 3-yr period, we compared the attractiveness of methyl salicylate (MeSA), either alone or i

Evaluation of a Methoprene Aerial Application for the Control of Culiseta melanura (Diptera: Culicidae) in Wetland Larval Habitats.

Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV) is an arbovirus endemic to the eastern United States. Human cases are rare but can be serious. The primary enzootic vector is Culiseta melanura (Coquillett) (Diptera: Culicidae), an ornithophagic mosquito. We conducted an aerial application of a granular methoprene formulation in Hockomock Swamp (Massachusetts), which represents a focus of EEEV transmission. Water collected from inside and outside Cs. melanura crypts was evaluated in bioassays of early fourth instar Cs. melanura larvae using treated and untreated water. Adult eclosion rates were 36% sig

Anopheles metabolic proteins in malaria transmission, prevention and control: a review.

The increasing resistance to currently available insecticides in the malaria vector, Anopheles mosquitoes, hampers their use as an effective vector control strategy for the prevention of malaria transmission. Therefore, there is need for new insecticides and/or alternative vector control strategies, the development of which relies on the identification of possible targets in Anopheles. Some known and promising targets for the prevention or control of malaria transmission exist among Anopheles metabolic proteins. This review aims to elucidate the current and potential contribution of Anopheles

Semi-field evaluation of freestanding transfluthrin passive emanators and the BG sentinel trap as a "push-pull control strategy" against Aedes aegypti mosquitoes.

BACKGROUND: Spatial repellents that drive mosquitoes away from treated areas, and odour-baited traps, that attract and kill mosquitoes, can be combined and work synergistically in a push-pull system. Push-pull systems have been shown to reduce house entry and outdoor biting rates of malaria vectors and so have the potential to control other outdoor biting mosquitoes such as Aedes aegypti that transmit arboviral diseases. In this study, semi-field experiments were conducted to evaluate whether a push-pull system could be used to reduce bites from Aedes mosquitoes. METHODS: The push and pull un

Preferences of Pet Owners in Regard to the Use of Insecticides for Flea Control.

A survey conducted from 2002 to 2012 of 759 customers from 84 veterinary practices allows us to examine the habits of dog and cat owners regarding the use of insecticides for flea control. The results indicate that the percentage of animals treated during the 12 mo prior to the survey was not very high (71% in dogs and 50% in cats), considering that 100% of animals included in the study were flea-infested. Statistical analysis shows that animals older than 4 mo are treated more frequently and that dogs are more likely to be treated than cats. Among cats, those living in houses with gardens or

Assessment of a Density-Based Action Threshold for Suppression of Sugarcane Aphids, (Hemiptera: Aphididae), in the Southern High Plains.

In the High Plains, sugarcane aphid, Melanaphis sacchari Zehntner (Hemiptera: Aphididae), colonize grain sorghum, Sorghum bicolor (L) Moench (Cyperales: Poaceae), when it is in reproductive stages and aphid populations increase rapidly. Sugarcane aphid management recommendations based on aphid densities have been implemented in southern United States, but have not been assessed in the High Plains. Therefore, the goal of this work was to validate whether these guidelines can provide effective suppression of the aphids and improve yield. In a 2-y field experiment, sorghum susceptible (DKS44-20)

Most outdoor malaria transmission by behaviourally-resistant Anopheles arabiensis is mediated by mosquitoes that have previously been inside houses.

BACKGROUND: Anopheles arabiensis is stereotypical of diverse vectors that mediate residual malaria transmission globally, because it can feed outdoors upon humans or cattle, or enter but then rapidly exit houses without fatal exposure to insecticidal nets or sprays. METHODS: Life histories of a well-characterized An. arabiensis population were simulated with a simple but process-explicit deterministic model and relevance to other vectors examined through sensitivity analysis. RESULTS: Where most humans use bed nets, two thirds of An. arabiensis blood feeds and half of malaria transmission ev
