OBJECTIVE: Condylar fractures remain the most controversial topic in maxillofacial trauma. Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) with use of an extraoral approach has certain benefits over the nonsurgical treatment. Concerns, however, remain about the risk of facial nerve injury, postoperative facial nerve weakness, and facial scarring when operating in this region despite the various extraoral approaches that have been developed. The recently popularized endoscope-assisted open reduction and internal fixation (EAORIF) is claimed to provide better results because it is minimally invasive

BACKGROUND: Impaction of mandibular second molars is uncommon, particularly when associated with severe root dilaceration and intimate proximity to the inferior alveolar canal. Such cases present considerable diagnostic and therapeutic challenges because surgical extraction may result in neurosensory injury. This case report describes the successful interdisciplinary management of a deeply impacted mandibular second molar using controlled orthodontic traction supported by skeletal anchorage.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 18-year-old female presented seeking orthodontic treatment because of dissatisfa

PURPOSE: The nerve sliding technique (NST) was introduced for repairing inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) defect and overcoming the disadvantages of conventional surgical treatment methods such as nerve graft. This study was conducted to identify factors associated with functional sensory recovery (FSR) following inferior alveolar nerve repair using the NST.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study including all patients who underwent IAN repair using the NST at Seoul National University Dental Hospital, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery from February 2009 to March 2

BACKGROUND: We hypothesized that trauma surgeons can safely selectively manage traumatic craniomaxillofacial injuries (CMF) without specialist consult, thereby decreasing the overall cost burden to patients.
METHODS: A 4-year retrospective analysis of all CMF fractures diagnosed on facial CT scans. CMF consultation was compared with no-CMF consultation. Demographics, injury severity, and specialty consultation charges were recorded. Penetrating injuries, skull fractures, or patients completing inpatient craniofacial surgery were excluded.
RESULTS: 303 patients were studied (124 CMF consultat…

BACKGROUND: Evidence shows neural involvement in bone remodeling; regulating maxillofacial nerve repair modulates jawbone. Neural stem cell (NSC) therapy is limited by sources/ethics, but neural crest-derived dental mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) like stem cells from the apical papilla (SCAPs) have strong neuroregenerative potential for NSC transdifferentiation. Schisantherin A (Sch-A), neuroprotective, enhances NSC proliferation/differentiation. This study explores optimal Sch-A concentration/duration for SCAP neural differentiation and effects on rat mental nerve repair/mandibular development

Mandibular fractures constitute a major portion of maxillofacial trauma and may lead to considerable functional and aesthetic sequelae if treatment is inadequate or delayed. An epidemiology study on mandibular fractures may guide the preventive efforts of the Taiwan public health care system. Therefore, a retrospective review was conducted at a medical center in central Taiwan to evaluate the current mandibular fracture epidemiology. The medical records and digitized radiographs of 198 patients who received treatment for mandibular fractures during a 3-year period (from October 2010 to Septembe

BACKGROUND: Trauma is among the main death causes and morbidity in the world and is often related to the use of alcohol and its abuse has reached massive proportions, no matter if the country is developed or not, being considered as public health problem. Since there are very few randomized and prospective studies in literature about the association of facial trauma and the use of alcohol, this study aims to investigate the impact of alcohol use in facial trauma.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was a prospective and cross sectional study, involving facial trauma patients attended at Oral Maxillofa

BACKGROUND: During the last 2 decades, many studies on the treatment of mandibular condyle fracture have been published. The incidence of mandibular condyle fractures is variable, ranging from 17.5% to 52% of all mandibular fractures. This retrospective study evaluated the long-term clinical and radiological outcomes after surgical treatment of 25 patients with a total of 26 extracapsular condyle fractures.
METHODS: We used 2 types of surgical approaches, the retromandibular retroparotid or preauricular approach. Three kinds of rigid internal fixation plates were used-single plate, double pla

PURPOSE: Interfacility hospital transfer for isolated midfacial fractures is common but rarely clinically necessary. The purpose of this study was to generate nationally representative estimates regarding the incidence, risk factors, and cost of transfer for isolated midface fractures.
METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study using the Nationwide Emergency Department Sample 2018 to identify patients with isolated midface fractures. The primary predictor variable was hospital trauma center designation (Level I, Level II, Level III, and nontrauma center). The primary outcome variable was

BACKGROUND: The oral cavity poses challenges in surgical interventions due to its microbial flora. Maxillofacial trauma surgeries are vulnerable to infections, complicating recovery. Traditional methods, including antibiotic prophylaxis, have limitations, highlighting the need for complementary strategies.
OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the impact of professional oral hygiene protocol on infection rates, mucosal health, and pain levels in maxillofacial trauma patients.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective study analyzed 529 patients treated for maxillofacial trauma at the Maxillo-Facial Su

Our goal was to test the predictive value of high-attenuation material within the maxillary sinus for adjacent facial bone fracture. After IRB approval, all blunt trauma facial CTs performed over a 5-month period at a level II trauma center were reviewed in consensus by three radiologists for the presence of facial fractures or high attenuation maxillary sinus opacity (≥30HU, ≥40HU, or ≥50HU). Three classes of fractures were analyzed: any fracture, any fracture contiguous with the maxillary sinus, and only fractures not contiguous with the maxillary sinus. Statistics were calculated using two-

BACKGROUND: Pediatric facial fractures, although uncommon, have a significant impact on public health and the US economy by the coexistence of other injuries and developmental deformities. Violence is one of the most frequent mechanisms leading to facial fracture. Teaching hospitals, while educating future medical professionals, have been linked to greater resource utilization in differing scenarios. This study was designed to compare the differences in patient characteristics and outcomes between teaching and non-teaching hospitals for violence-related pediatric facial fractures.
METHODS: Us

This report is a retrospective review of 74 cases of mandibular fractures managed in a craniomaxillofacial trauma centre between January 1994 and May 1998. Demographic data revealed that 85% of the patient population were male, with a mean age of 27.5 years. The commonest causes of injury were motor vehicle accidents (48.6%), followed by assault (16.2%) and accidental falls (17.6%). In 25 patients (33.8%) the fractures were single. Of these, fractures of the condylar region were the most common (8 patients). The remaining patients sustained fractures in two or more anatomic sites. There were o

Severe facial injuries are becoming more and more common, -either facial injuries alone or associated with other injuries, -or facial deformities due to cancer which has required radical surgical operation. The authors analyse the cases of 26 patients with trauma and 24 with neoplastic radical surgical modifications. In the first group, pre-operative resuscitation is often an emergency, e.g. tracheotomy to restore or maintain vital respiratory functions. In the second group, the patients are often elderly and undernourished and they require intensive care before operation. In both groups there

BACKGROUND: Though the epidemiology of craniomaxillofacial (CMF) fractures has been well documented at urban hospitals, the characteristics of these fractures in rural hospitals have not been well studied.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to report on the epidemiology of CMF fractures at a regional Level 1 trauma center serving a large rural population in central Illinois.
STUDY DESIGN, SETTING, SAMPLE: This is a retrospective cohort study at a community-based regional tertiary referral center that serves a predominantly rural population. Inclusion criteria comprised patients with radio

Biomaterials for reconstruction of bony defects of the skull comprise of osteosynthetic materials applied after osteotomies or traumatic fractures and materials to fill bony defects which result from malformations, traumata or tumor resections. Other applications concern functional augmentations for dental implants or asthetic augmentations in the region of the face. For ostheosynthesis, mini- and microplates from titanium alloys provide major advantages concerning biocompatibility, stability and individual fitting to the implant bed. The necessity of removal of asymptomatic plates and screws

A prospective evaluation of patients who had sustained midfacial trauma was carried out in order to determine the prevalence of impaired convergence and accommodation and to establish the risk factors for such defects. Of 52 patients in this study, 11 suffered accommodation and/or convergence disturbances. They included 6 males (17% of the male population) and 5 females (29% of the female population). Nine of these 11 patients sustained their injuries due to alleged assaults (24.3% of all assaulted patients) and 2 following simple falls (25% of all fall victims). Five patients complained of do

Three-dimensional (3-D) computed tomographic (CT) scans of 72 adult patients were evaluated by two observers in a blinded fashion by comparing the 3-D images with the two-dimensional (axial and coronal) CT scans. With 3-D CT, the observers found improved visualization of facial anatomy in certain patients (i.e., asymmetries of the whole face and skull, large defects of the midface and skull vault, and fractures with major dislocation). In these defects, the information can be assimilated more rapidly. The documentation of effects of cranial surgery on craniofacial growth and resorption after r
