Children's well-being 11 years after the Chornobyl catastrophe.

BACKGROUND: The psychological effects of technological disasters have rarely been studied in children. This study assessed the aftermath of the 1986 Chornobyl disaster in children evacuated to Kyiv from the contaminated zone surrounding the nuclear power facility. METHODS: In 1997, we evaluated three hundred 10- to 12-year-old children in Kyiv who were in utero or infants at the time of the disaster and who had resided near Chornobyl (evacuees) and 300 sex-matched homeroom classmates who had never lived in a radiation-contaminated area. Response rates were 92% (evacuees) and 85% (classmates).

Addressing the between-group comparison problem: Detecting differences between correlation matrix populations due to single-variable perturbations for resting state fMRI.

Resting-state fMRI (RS-fMRI) has been known for decades as a promising method for evaluating cognitive and mental states, both in health and especially in disease, due to its ease of implementation as a short, standard MRI protocol. In clinical settings, a group of patients with a given disorder is typically compared to a group of healthy controls. This poses an inherent challenge of between-group comparison. We propose a new efficient model for characterizing changes to the temporal synchronization of brain activity measured using RS-fMRI between groups, summarized as individual correlation m

Perceived stress as mediator on the relationship between emotional intelligence and life satisfaction among low-income Malaysians.

Perceived stress is one of the key psychological factors that influence overall life satisfaction. Low-income individuals are among those who consistently face stress. Emotional intelligence is known to reduce stress and improved wellbeing, yet limited research has been done among low-income populations. This study examined whether perceived stress mediates the relationship between emotional intelligence and life satisfaction among low-income adults in Malaysia. A cross-sectional study was conducted among participants recruited from a public primary healthcare clinic. The study inclusion crite

A Substance Abuse, Violence and Unhealthy Alcohol Use Syndemic Predicts Depression: A Longitudinal Study of Black Women Living With HIV in Four US Cities.

OBJECTIVE: Black women living with HIV (BWLH) have a heightened susceptibility to depression due to factors such as intimate partner violence (IPV), alcohol use, and substance abuse. This study examined the relationship between Substance Abuse, Violence, and Heavy Alcohol use (SAVA) among BWLH to determine whether this relationship creates distinct syndemic classes and whether class membership was associated with depressive symptoms. METHODS: Data for this study were drawn from the WAVE sub-study, which included women enrolled in the WIHS (n = 363) collected between April 2016 and April 2017

Attention Regulation Among Sleep-Deprived Air-Force Pilots.

Short sleep duration is associated with adverse physical and mental events. However, it is quite challenging to objectively quantify its impact on human cognitive performance. Thus, we aim to examine the effects of sleep deprivation on physiological measures of emotional and attention regulation, in terms of recovery dynamics among sleep-deprived air force pilots. Ninety-one pilots participated in a sleep deprivation workshop held by an aeromedical center. The Auditory Sustained Attention Test (ASAT) and the Psychomotor Vigilance Test were applied to evaluate emotional and attention performanc

Membrane Partition and Structural Reorganization Induced by Antipsychotics with Distinct Clinical Profiles.

Antipsychotics (APs) are used in the treatment of severe mental disorders. Their mechanism of action involves interaction with multiple brain targets, notably the dopamine D2 receptor (D2R), where they compete with dopamine. Due to their lipophilic nature, APs also partition and accumulate in lipid membranes, particularly around the D2R and in synaptic vesicles. When intercalated into brain membranes, APs slowly accumulate and act as reservoirs, allowing their rapid release on demand to modulate neurotransmitter signaling. They also modify the physicochemical and mechanical properties of the l

The influence of sex and gender factors on the modulation of vulnerability to addictions: a narrative review.

This narrative review identifies the sex- and gender-related factors that influence individual vulnerability to developing addictive disorders. Addiction arises from the complex interaction between neurobiological and psychosocial factors. Sex-based brain dimorphisms, shaped by genetic, hormonal, and epigenetic influences, lead to differences in neural circuits involved in reward, emotional regulation, and executive functioning. Pharmacokinetic differences, such as higher blood alcohol levels, faster nicotine metabolism, and slower μ-opioid receptor internalization in women, contribute to earl

Adolescent social isolation induces sex-specific behavioral and neural alterations.

Adversities associated with isolation during adolescence, including the lack of appropriate emotional and social experiences, can jeopardize the individual development leading to the onset of mental illnesses such as major depressive disorder. Girls have higher rates of depression compared to boys; however, the relative contribution of biological and cultural factors to such a gender-dependent difference remains unclear. To identify the role of biological factors in this distinct susceptibility, we exposed adolescent C57BL/6 male and female mice (n = 12-14) to social isolation and we evaluated

Training Needs Analysis for Medical Students in Assessing Cognitive Functioning: An Observational Study.

BACKGROUNDS: Research shows that medical students' knowledge and skills concerning the assessment of cognition in various neuropsychiatric conditions (e.g., Alzheimer's disease and schizophrenia) are unsatisfactory. This research aims to conduct a training needs analysis (TNA) for medical students to identify and refer patients with neuropsychiatric conditions. METHODS: The study comprised two phases. First, developing a TNA toolkit to assess training needs in clinical tasks related to cognitive function assessment (by adopting the Hennessy-Hicks TNA toolkit); and second, through a self-repor

School-based prevention of teacher and parental violence against children: Study protocol of a cluster-randomized controlled trial in Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Violence against children at home and at school is particularly prevalent in Africa and is associated with adverse and persistent health effects on children. The violence prevention intervention Interaction Competencies with Children - for Teachers (ICC-T) is an effective tool to reduce violence against children by fostering teachers' non-violent communication and interaction skills. To enhance these effects, in the present study, ICC-T will be extended to parents (ICC-P) aiming to increase children's experience of consistent behavior and application of non-violent discipline strat

A longitudinal study of gambling motives, problem gambling and need frustration.

Gambling motives are an important element in understanding the development of problem gambling, yet most of the recent studies investigating their role in problem gambling have been cross-sectional. This study analyzed the links between gambling motives and problem gambling using a longitudinal study design. The moderating effect of the frustration of basic psychological needs was also assessed. The study sample with 1,022 participants (48.43% female, Mage = 49.50 years) was surveyed at three timepoints (T1-T3) in 6-month intervals. The Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI) was used to measur

More is more: Evidence for the incremental value of the SCID-II/SCID-5-PD specific factors over and above a general personality disorder factor.

Currently, 3 competing conceptualizations of personality dysfunction can be distinguished: the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) categorical model delineating 10 distinct types of personality disorders (PDs); the alternative model for PDs (DSM-5 Section III), which assesses personality functioning and traits separately; and the International Classification of Diseases, 11th Version conceptualization, which provides 1 single code for the presence of a PD (which is based on problems in functioning) as well as codes that specify the level of the disorder

Taking Care Triple P for Foster Parents With Young Children in Foster Care: Results of a 1-Year Randomized Trial.

Young children with a history of maltreatment or neglect in foster families often confront their caregivers with particularly challenging behaviors. This may lead to more parenting stress, an increased risk for the child in foster care to experience further maltreatment, and placement disruptions. We conducted a randomized controlled trial to investigate the efficacy of a parent group training tailored to the special needs of foster families. We hypothesized significant short- and long-term improvements regarding foster parents' parenting competencies, child mental health problems, and related
