Is Demodex folliculorum an aetiological factor in seborrhoeic dermatitis?

BACKGROUND: Seborrhoeic dermatitis (SD) is a common inflammatory skin disease for which no single cause has been found, although many factors have been implicated. The mite Demodex folliculorum (DF) is most commonly seen in the pilosebaceous unit in humans. SD is located in areas that are rich in sebaceous glands, which are also preferred by DF. AIMS: To compare the number of DF parasites in patients with clinical SD and in healthy controls, and to investigate any possible relationship between the number of DF mites and the presence of SD. METHODS: The study comprised 38 patients with SD and

Feather mites and internal parasites in small ground finches (Geospiza fuliginosa, Emberizidae) from the Galapagos Islands (Equador).

During a parasite survey, we collected data on the presence and distribution of feather mites, intestinal parasites, and blood parasites of small ground finches (Geospiza fuliginosa) from 4 islands in the Galapagos. We recorded 4 species of feather mites, with the most common species, Trouessartia geospiza, present on the majority (77% [308/400]) of individuals. Birds with high loads of T. geospiza came from larger islands and had higher body masses. We identified 3 species of intestinal Isospora (Isospora fragmenta, Isospora temeraria, and Isospora exigua) in fecal samples that showed a diurn

Faecal and protozoan parasite contamination of water spinach (Ipomoea aquatica) cultivated in urban wastewater in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the level of contamination with thermotolerant coliforms (ThC), intestinal helminth eggs and protozoan parasites in water spinach (Ipomoea aquatica) cultivated in a wastewater-fed lake in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. METHODS: The investigation was carried out from July 2004 to May 2005 in Boeng Cheung Ek lake, a main recipient of wastewater from the city of Phnom Penh. Water spinach samples were collected near two wastewater entry points in the northern part of the lake and near a wastewater exit point in the southern part of the lake, where water is discharged from the lake i

Electron microscopic observations of Orientia tsutsugamushi in salivary gland cells of naturally Infected Leptotrombidium pallidum larvae during feeding.

We performed a detailed electron microscopic observation on the escaping process of Orientia tsutsugamushi from the salivary gland cells of naturally infected trombiculid larvae into the acinar lumen of the gland during feeding on mice. In unfed larvae, many O. tsutsugamushi were intermingled with secretory granules in the cytoplasm of the salivary gland cell. O. tsutsugamushi was neither found in the acinar lumen nor observed escaping from the apical surface of the gland cell. In contrast, in the larvae fed on mice, many O. tsutsugamushi were observable in the acinar lumen. They were envelope

Cutaneous xanthomas with concurrent demodicosis and dermatophytosis in a cat.

Multiple cutaneous xanthomas, associated with fasting hyperlipidaemia, are described in a 9-month-old domestic long-haired cat. A severely pruritic, papular, and crusting dermatitis affecting the head and neck, initially diagnosed as lesions of the eosinophilic granuloma complex, progressively developed on the head and pinnae. Pruritus was controlled with administration of prednisolone and chlorambucil. Repeat histological examination confirmed the diagnosis of cutaneous xanthoma and concurrent mild demodicosis. Marked fasting hypercholesterolaemia, hypertriglyceridaemia and transient hypergly

SCA-MobiPlant: smartphone-deployed multistage attention fusion model for accurate field detection of chili leaf curl complex.

BACKGROUND: Field-scale assessment of chili leaf curl complex presents a significant diagnostic challenge, as both chili leaf curl virus (ChiLCV) and mite infestations produce visually overlapping symptoms difficult to distinguish by untrained personnel. This diagnostic confusion frequently leads to inappropriate application of either insecticides or acaricides, resulting in economic losses and environmental concerns. To address this issue, we propose SCA-MobiPlant, an improved MobileNetV3-Small model integrated with a novel multistage Squeeze-and-Excitation Coordinate Attention (SCA) fusion m…

Factors affecting patterns of Amblyomma triste (Acari: Ixodidae) parasitism in a rodent host.

Here we offer a multivariable analysis that explores associations of different factors (i.e., environmental, host parameters, presence of other ectoparasites) with the interaction of Amblyomma triste immature stages and one of its main hosts in Argentina, the rodent Akodon azarae. Monthly and for two years, we captured and sampled rodents at 16 points located at 4 different sites in the Parana River Delta region. The analyses were conducted with Generalized Linear Mixed Models with a negative binomial response (counts of larvae or nymphs). The independent variables assessed were: (a) environme

[Phthiriasis, the mysterious lousy disease of antiquity. Fact or fiction?].

The lousy disease (phthiriasis) and its potentially deadly consequences is well attested from antiquity until the 19th century. Intensely itching, vesicular or tumorous skin lesions defile the body and release swarms of insects spontaneously or after incision. Several well-known persons from antiquity and the early modern period are supposed to have died of the lousy disease. Both classicists and physicians have questioned the credibility of said accounts. By means of our interdisciplinary approach based on an analysis of different descriptions of the lousy disease from antiquity to the 19th c

Incidence of Demodex folliculorum in patients with end stage chronic renal failure.

BACKGROUND: Demodex folliculorum (DF), found in the pilosebaceous unit, is the most common ectoparasite in humans. It has been implicated in various clinical lesions such as pustular folliculitis, papulopustular scalp eruption, perioral dermatitis, and skin lesions of immunosuppressed patients on chemotherapy or with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). OBJECTIVE: We aimed to determine DF carriers and location of DF among patients on chronic dialysis because of end stage renal failure (ESRF), to compare them with healthy controls, and to examine the relationship between DF incidence and

Erythematotelangiectatic rosacea may be associated with a subclinical stage of demodicosis: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Facial densities of Demodex mites have been observed to be greater in patients with demodicosis and papulopustular rosacea than in healthy control patients. In patients with erythematotelangiectatic rosacea (ETR), this density has been observed to be similar to or greater than that of healthy controls. Erythema and telangiectasia, characteristics of ETR, are often observed among patients with pityriasis folliculorum, a discreet demodicosis, suggesting a possible link between these conditions. OBJECTIVES: To compare the facial Demodex densities of patients with clinical ETR and pat

Evaluation of three enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays for sarcoptic mange diagnosis and assessment in the Iberian ibex, Capra pyrenaica.

BACKGROUND: Sarcoptic mange is a contagious skin disease caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei, affecting different mammalian species worldwide including the Iberian ibex (Capra pyrenaica), in which mortalities over 90 % of the population have been reported. No efficient diagnostic methods are available for this disease, particularly when there are low mite numbers and mild or no clinical signs. In this study, three enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) developed for dog (ELISA A), Cantabrian chamois (Rupicapra pyrenaica parva) (ELISA B) and Alpine chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra) (ELISA C),

Bartonella Species Identified in Rodent and Feline Hosts from Island and Mainland Western Australia.

Bacteria of the genus Bartonella have been described in multiple mammalian hosts with many species capable of causing disease in humans. Cats and various species of rats have been reported to play a role as vertebrate hosts to a number of Bartonella spp. This study aimed to identify Bartonella spp. in Western Australia, Dirk Hartog Island (DHI), and Christmas Island (CI) and to investigate the presence of potential arthropod vectors. Feral cats were collected from CI (n = 35), DHI (n = 23) and southwest Western Australia (swWA; n = 58), and black rats were collected from CI (n = 48). Individua

Socialized medicine: individual and communal disease barriers in honey bees.

Honey bees are attacked by numerous parasites and pathogens toward which they present a variety of individual and group-level defenses. In this review, we briefly introduce the many pathogens and parasites afflicting honey bees, highlighting the biology of specific taxonomic groups mainly as they relate to virulence and possible defenses. Second, we describe physiological, immunological, and behavioral responses of individual bees toward pathogens and parasites. Third, bees also show behavioral mechanisms for reducing the disease risk of their nestmates. Accordingly, we discuss the dynamics of
