The aim of the present study was to determine the association between the severity of temporomandibular disorder (TMD) and mandibular range of motion (ROM). For such, a cross-sectional study was carried out with a sample of 92 women from the university community. The Fonseca's anamnestic index (FAI) was used to determine the severity of TMD, as follows: without TMD (n = 23), mild TMD (n = 23), moderate TMD (n = 23), and severe TMD (n = 23). Mouth opening, lateral excursion and protrusion of the mandible were measured. Spearman's correlation coefficients were calculated to determine the associa…

In this paper I describe the key features of optic flow processing in pigeons. Optic flow is the visual motion that occurs across the entire retina as a result of self-motion and is processed by subcortical visual pathways that project to the cerebellum. These pathways originate in two retinal-recipient nuclei, the nucleus of the basal optic root (nBOR) and the nucleus lentiformis mesencephali, which project to the vestibulocerebellum (VbC) (folia IXcd and X), directly as mossy fibers, and indirectly as climbing fibers from the inferior olive. Optic flow information is integrated with vestibul…

BACKGROUND: Knee stiffness or limited range of motion (ROM) after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) may compromise patient function. Patients with stiffness are usually managed with manipulation under anesthesia (MUA) to improve ROM. However, the final ROM obtained is multifactorial and may depend on factors such as comorbidities, implant type, or the timing of MUA.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We asked whether diabetes mellitus, implant type, and the interval between TKA and MUA influenced post-MUA ROM.
METHODS: From a group of 2462 patients with 3224 TKAs performed between 1999 and 2007 we retrospectiv…

Two identified locust neurons, the lobula giant movement detector (LGMD) and its postsynaptic partner, the descending contralateral movement detector (DCMD), constitute one motion-sensitive pathway in the visual system that responds preferentially to objects that approach on a direct collision course and are implicated in collision-avoidance behavior. Previously described responses to the approach of paired objects and approaches at different time intervals (Guest BB, Gray JR. J Neurophysiol 95: 1428-1441, 2006) suggest that this pathway may also be affected by more complicated movements in th…

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have demonstrated that the humerus slides along the long head of the biceps tendon (LHBT). Blocking this motion may result in decreased glenohumeral (GH) range of motion (ROM). The goal of the study was to characterize the excursion of the LHBT and measure the effect of biceps adhesions on GH ROM.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A custom biomechanical testing setup was used to measure the excursion of the LHBT and rotation of the humerus at 0°, 15°, 30°, 60°, and 90° of GH abduction in the scapular plane. An in situ biceps tenodesis with the biceps anchor still intact, thu…

Several tendencies found in explicit judgments about object motion have been interpreted as evidence that people possess a naive theory of impetus. The theory states that objects that are caused to move by other objects acquire force that determines the kind of motion exhibited by the object, and that this force gradually dissipates over time. I argue that the findings can better be understood as manifestations of a general understanding of externally caused motion based on experiences of acting on objects. Experiences of acting on objects yield the idea that properties of the cause of motion …

Helicases are motor proteins that play a central role in the metabolism of DNA and RNA in biological cells. Using the energy of ATP molecule … echanical perturbations are analyzed. This enables us to identify robust and ordered conformational motions which may underlie the functional activity of these proteins. As we show, such motions are well-organized and have large amplitudes. Their possible roles in the processing of nucleic substrate are discussed.

The trackball has been widely employed as a control/command input device on moving vehicles, but few studies have explored the effects of platform motion on its manipulation. Fewer still have considered this issue in designing the user interface and the arrangement of console location and orientation simultaneously. This work describes an experiment carried out to investigate the performance of trackball users on a simple point-and-click task in a motion simulator. By varying the orientation of onscreen targets, the effect of cursor movement direction on performance is investigated. The result…

Motion sickness (MS) has been identified as a non-thermal factor that can moderate autonomic thermoregulatory responses. It has been shown that MS exaggerates core cooling during immersion in cold (15 °C) and luke-warm (28 °C) water by attenuating cold-induced vasoconstriction. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether MS affects thermal balance in a thermoneutral air environment. Eleven subjects were exposed to rotation in two conditions, control (CN) and MS. In the CN condition subjects refrained from head movements, whereas in the MS condition they performed a sequence of maxi…

A common plantar pressure analysis technique requires dividing the pressure distribution into regions based on key landmarks of the foot. Typically, this is done using visual inspection of the footprint and is subject to error when there is abnormal foot contact. A novel, robust method of synchronizing motion capture and plantar pressure data was created that allows for motion capture markers to be projected onto the plantar pressure mat for accurate subdivision of the foot. Validation studies showed that spatial synchronization of the plantar pressure and motion capture systems was determined…

Multipeaked waves (MPW) in the distal esophagus occur frequently in patients with esophageal spastic motor disorders and diabetes mellitus and are thought to represent repetitive esophageal contractions. We aimed to investigate whether the relative motion between a stationary pressure sensor and contracted peristaltic esophageal segment that moves with respiration leads to the formation of MPW. We mathematically modeled the effect of relative movement between a moving pressure segment and a fixed pressure sensor on the pressure waveform morphology. We conducted retrospective analysis of 100 sw…

BACKGROUND: Reduced ankle dorsiflexion range of motion, or ankle equinus, is a common and disabling problem for patients with neuromuscular disease. Clinicians devote considerable time and resources implementing interventions to correct this problem although few of these interventions have been subject to rigorous empirical investigation.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effect of interventions to reduce or resolve ankle equinus in people with neuromuscular disease.
SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Neuromuscular Disease Group Trials Specialized Register (August 2009), Cochrane Central Regi…
