In Caiman crocodilus, identification of nuclei that comprise the dorsal thalamus was determined by: injections of retrograde tracers into cortex/pallium; injections of retrograde tracers into the noncortical telencephalon; and injections of anterograde tracers into thalamic nuclei. With the exception of nucleus dorsolateralis anterior, which has bilateral projections, all other dorsal thalamic nuclei send axons to terminate in the ipsilateral telencephalon. Nuclei that only projected to cortex/pallium were: dorsolateralis anterior; diagonalis; and dorsal geniculate. Neuronal aggregates that se

Human fMRI studies revealed involvement of the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) during memory retrieval. However, corresponding memory-related regions in macaque PPC have not been established. In this monkey fMRI study, comparisons of cortical activity during correct recognition of previously seen items and rejection of unseen items revealed two major PPC activation sites that were differentially characterized by a serial probe recognition paradigm: area PG/PGOp in inferior parietal lobule, along with the hippocampus, was more active for initial item retrieval, while area PEa/DIP in intrapariet

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive, neurodegenerative disease characterized by cell and synapse losses and the ensued network disconnections. Olfactory impairment is common and occurs early in AD patients, suggesting its potential role in the early diagnosis of AD. However, the functional connectivity of the olfactory system in AD has received little attention. Using local field potentials symmetrically recorded from the two olfactory bulbs in awake mice, we found that in AD model mice with robust amyloid-β burden, the coherence between the two bulbs for spontaneous activities was signi

The coding of stimulus information into patterns of spike times occurs widely in sensory systems. Determining how temporally coded information is decoded by central neurons is essential to understanding how brains process sensory stimuli. Mormyrid weakly electric fishes are experts at time coding, making them an exemplary organism for addressing this question. Mormyrids generate brief, stereotyped electric pulses. Pulse waveform carries information about sender identity, and it is encoded into submillisecond-to-millisecond differences in spike timing between receptors. Mormyrids vary the time

In the present study, we evaluated the contribution of the individual synaptic constituents of all assessed neurotransmitter systems by subjecting all available in vivo imaging studies on patients with unipolar major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar depression (BD) to a retrospective analysis. In acute MDD, findings revealed significant increases of prefrontal and frontal DA synthesis, decreases of thalamic and midbrain SERT, increases of insular SERT, decreases of midbrain 5-HT(1A) receptors and decreases of prefrontal, frontal, occipital and cingulate 5-HT(2A) receptors, whereas, in rem

No single model of migraine explains all of the known features of the disorder. Migraine has recently been characterized as an abnormality in pain-modulating circuits in the brainstem. The periaqueductal gray appears to have a critical role in migraine genesis and has been labeled the "migraine generator." The concept of a "pain matrix," rather than a specific locus of pain, is widely accepted in the pain literature and offers a new dimension to understanding migraine. Recent neuroimaging studies of migraineurs suggest altered functional connectivity between brainstem pain-modulating circuits

Defining the structural and functional connectivity of the human brain (the human "connectome") is a basic challenge in neuroscience. Recently, techniques for noninvasively characterizing structural connectivity networks in the adult brain have been developed using diffusion and high-resolution anatomic MRI. The purpose of this study was to establish a framework for assessing structural connectivity in the newborn brain at any stage of development and to show how network properties can be derived in a clinical cohort of six-month old infants sustaining perinatal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy

The cingulum bundle is a white matter fiber bundle in the human brain that is believed to be implicated in various neurological and psychiatric diseases. Subtle disease-related differences in metabolite concentrations in the cingulum tracts that may underlie these diseases may be detected using MR spectroscopic information. However, to date, limited signal to noise and lack of spatial resolution have prevented a reliable and reproducible measurement of metabolites in the cingulum bundle in vivo. Here we propose a new method that combines MR spectroscopic imaging at 7 T with fiber tracking to s

Recent morphological and physiological studies support the assumption that the extrageniculate ascending tectofugal pathways send visual projection to the caudate nucleus (CN) in amniotes. In the present study we investigate the anatomical connection between the visual associative cortex along the anterior ectosylvian sulcus (AES) and the CN in adult domestic cats. An anterograde tracer - fluoro-dextrane-amine - was injected into the AES cortex. The distribution of labeled axons was not uniform in the CN. The majority of labeled axons and terminal like puncta was found only in a limited area i

The human amygdala is strongly embedded in numerous other structures of the limbic system, but is also a hub for a multitude of other brain regions it is connected with. Its major involvement in various kinds of integrative sensory and emotional functions makes it a cornerstone for self-relevant biological and social appraisals of the environment and consequently also for the processing of autobiographical events. Given its contribution to the integration of emotion, perception and cognition (including memory for past autobiographical events) the amygdala also forges the establishment and main

OBJECTIVE: To develop a series of experimental animal models of myoclonus with different origins consistent with myoclonus seizure in clinic setting.
METHODS: GABA(A) antagonist SR95531 was microinjected into the primary motor cortex (PMC), corpus striatum, nucleus reticular of the thalamus (NRT) to induce myoclonus (EMG burst of myoclonus <or= 400 ms). The behavior characteristics including latency, peak time, duration of seizure peak, maximal seizure frequency and total duration were observed. EMGs and ictal EEGs were recorded synchronously. The origin of myoclonus and its correlation with

Bilateral damage in the posterior cingulate region can induce anterograde amnesia. Identifying the potential contributions of the various areas within this heterogeneous region has, however, largely depended on animal research. Within the posterior cingulate region the retrosplenial cortex stands out by virtue of its dense interconnections with the hippocampal formation and anterior thalamic nuclei. Consistent with these connections is the finding from lesion studies in animals that the retrosplenial cortex is necessary for navigation and spatial learning, and that these functions occur in clo

Recent studies have demonstrated large amplitude spontaneous fluctuations in functional-MRI (fMRI) signals in humans in the resting state. Importantly, these spontaneous fluctuations in blood-oxygenation-level-dependent (BOLD) signal are often synchronized over distant parts of the brain, a phenomenon termed functional-connectivity. Functional-connectivity is widely assumed to reflect interregional coherence of fluctuations in activity of the underlying neuronal networks. Despite the large body of human imaging literature on spontaneous activity and functional-connectivity in the resting state

Motor deficit severity and the potential for recovery in patients with brain injury depend on the integrity of descending corticofugal projections. Clinical assessment of these conditions following subtotal brain trauma requires a comprehensive understanding of the anatomical structures involved in the lesion as well as those structures that are spared. To assist in this endeavor, we investigated motor fiber organization in the crus cerebri of the cerebral peduncle (ccCP) in the rhesus monkey. Fibers originating from the arm representations of the primary (M1), supplementary (M2), rostral cing

Recent studies have revealed that animal models of Huntington's disease and levodopa-induced dyskinesia show similar changes in corticostriatal transmission. In both conditions, corticostriatal long-term potentiation (LTP) is abnormally stable, causing persistent inhibition of the output nuclei of the basal ganglia, and involuntary movements. This finding has led to speculation that interventions that interfere with the maintenance of corticostriatal LTP might be useful as antidyskinetic treatments. One approach that is known to reduce cortical hyperexcitability in human disorders is the deliv

Rhythmic spontaneous bursting activity, which occurs in many developing neural circuits, has been considered to be important for the refinement of neural projections but not for early pathfinding decisions. However, the precise frequency of bursting activity differentially affects the two major pathfinding decisions made by chick lumbosacral motoneurons. Moderate slowing of burst frequency was shown previously to cause motoneurons to make dorsoventral (D-V) pathfinding errors and to alter the expression of molecules involved in that decision. Moderate speeding up of activity is shown here not

The origin of sensory nerves that innervate the submandibular salivary gland was investigated in the rat. After application of wheat germ agglutinin-horseradish peroxidase to the cut endings of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nerve branches at the hilus of the gland, labeled cells were mainly found in the dorsal root ganglia and the trigeminal ganglion, respectively. The labeled neurons in these ganglia were of various sizes compared to unlabeled neurons, suggesting that the sensory nerves of the gland conduct various modalities of sensory information.

The clinical signs grouped under the concept of apathy are a common feature of prefrontal and basal ganglia lesions or dysfunctions and can therefore help to improve our understanding of the functional anatomy of the prefrontal-basal ganglia system. Apathy is here defined as a quantitative reduction of voluntary, goal-directed behaviors. The underlying mechanisms responsible for apathy can be divided into three subtypes of disrupted processing: 'emotional-affective', 'cognitive' and 'auto-activation'. Apathy due to the disruption of 'emotional-affective' processing refers to the inability to e

We present a case of spontaneously occurring irrepressible saccades in an experimental Rhesus monkey. Though eye jerks are sometimes associated with cerebellar disease, central demyelination or brainstem lesions, there is little consensus on their neurological mechanisms. From neurological and anatomical investigation we report that these irrepressible saccades were caused by a discrete cerebrovascular accident that involved the rostral superior colliculus along with its commissure, and with minor invasion of periaqueductal gray and adjacent mesencephalic reticular formation. Other suspected s
