The effects of the introduction of the single-family room in neonatal and paediatric intensive care on the outcomes of paediatric patients, families, staff, and organizations: a mixed method systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The introduction of single-family rooms (SFRs) in neonatal (NICUs) and paediatric intensive care units (PICUs) enhances family involvement and transforms healthcare professionals’ approach to patient care. This shift promotes family-centred care while requiring adjustments in staff workflows and communication. Given the significant implications of this structural change, this review examines the effects of SFRs on paediatric intensive care patient outcomes, families, healthcare staff, and healthcare organizations. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, CINAHL, PsycIN

Antibiotic stewardship in a tertiary care NICU of northern India: a quality improvement initiative.

BACKGROUND: The overuse of antibiotics in newborns leads to increased mortality and morbidities. Implementation of a successful antibiotic stewardship programme (ASP) is necessary to decrease inappropriate use of antibiotics and its adverse effects. PROBLEM: Our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is a tertiary referral centre of north India, consisting of all outborn babies mostly with sepsis caused by high rate of multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs). So antibiotics are not only life-saving but also used excessively with a high antibiotic usage rate (AUR) of 574 per 1000 patient days. MET

The effect of a training program on maternal role adaptation and self-esteem of mothers with preterm infants: a quasi-experimental study.

BACKGROUND: Admission of preterm infants in the neonatal intensive care unit limits the mother's interaction with their infants, delaying accepting and playing the motherhood role. Besides, mothers of preterm infants have low self-esteem due to their infants' condition. Accordingly, the present study explored the effect of implementing the training program on maternal role adaptation and self-esteem of mothers of preterm infants admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit. METHODS: This study employed a quasi-experimental design with two groups. The participants were 80 mothers of preterm in

Experiences of community midwives receiving helping baby breathe training through the low dose high-frequency approach in Gujrat, Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: Pakistan's neonatal mortality rate has the highest proportion in the South Asian region and it is higher in the rural areas as compared to the urban areas. Poor resuscitation techniques and lack of basic newborn resuscitation skills in birth attendants are contributing factors towards neonatal deaths. Based on the significant outcomes of the Helping Baby Breath (HBB) training, similar training was implemented for Community Midwives (CMWs) in a low-resource setting in Gujrat, Pakistan, to improve their knowledge and skills. The training evaluation was conducted and participant feedb

Intraventricular hemorrhage in the premature neonate.

Intraventricular hemorrhage in the premature neonate has been and continues to be a cause of morbidity and mortality in NICUs around the globe. Much information is available concerning the etiology and preventative and treatment strategies to reduce the incidence of IVH in this patient population. As neonatal caregivers are struggling to care for and protect infants who are surviving despite extreme prematurity, this survival is complicated by the infant's cerebral vasculature, which is very susceptible to hemorrhage; by respiratory problems that require the use of lifesaving, but potentially

Postnatal care and acceptability of emollient therapy in very low birthweight infants in Harare, Zimbabwe: a qualitative analysis.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth (birth before 37 completed weeks of pregnancy) is the leading cause of neonatal and child under-five mortality globally, both of which are highest regionally in sub-Saharan Africa. The skin barrier plays a critical role in neonatal health and increasing evidence supports the use of topical emollient therapy to promote postnatal growth and reduce hospital-acquired infections in preterm infants. The World Health Organization (WHO) currently recommends emollient therapy in preterm or low birthweight infants globally but calls for further research on impacts of emollient

Parental satisfaction with care given in neonatal intensive care units, multicentre referral hospitals in eastern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Parental satisfaction is an important dimension of the quality of a child's care and has been shown to improve health outcomes, including adherence to therapeutic regimens and understanding of medical information. Parental satisfaction is low in resource-limited countries like Ethiopia, with the paucity of evidence. This study aimed to determine the magnitude of parental satisfaction with care given in neonatal intensive care and its associated factors among parents of neonates admitted to neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) at referral hospitals in eastern Ethiopia from June to

Evaluation of an audit and feedback intervention to reduce gentamicin prescription errors in newborn treatment (ReGENT) in neonatal inpatient care in Kenya: a controlled interrupted time series study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Medication errors are likely common in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). In neonatal hospital care where the population with severe illness has a high mortality rate, around 14.9% of drug prescriptions have errors in LMICs settings. However, there is scant research on interventions to improve medication safety to mitigate such errors. Our objective is to improve routine neonatal care particularly focusing on effective prescribing practices with the aim of achieving reduced gentamicin medication errors. METHODS: We propose to conduct an audit and feedback (A&F) study over 1

Effect of repeat refresher courses on neonatal resuscitation skill decay: an experimental comparative study of in-person and video-based simulation training.

Neonatal deaths are a major contributor to global under-5-year-old mortality. Training birth attendants can improve perinatal outcomes, but skills may fade over time. In this pilot study, we assessed skill decay of nursing students after remote video versus in-person resuscitation training in a low-resource setting. Filipino nursing students (n = 49) underwent traditional, in-person simulation-based Helping Babies Breathe (HBB) training in Mindanao, Philippines. Participants were then assigned to receive refresher training at 2-month intervals either in-person or via tele-simulation beginning
