Patients with simultanagnosia following bilateral parieto-temporo-occipital brain damage show a characteristic impairment of global gestalt perception, while their perception of individual objects or elements remains intact. For instance, when shown 'hierarchical' stimuli comprising a larger global object (e.g. a large letter) made up from smaller components (e.g. multiple small letters), they typically report seeing one of the smaller components but not the global figure. Recent work on simultanagnosia revealed that global perception can be improved if local element spacing is reduced. Howeve

Lesions to the right temporo-parietal cortex commonly result in hemispatial neglect. Lesions to the same area are also associated with hyperattention to local details of a scene and difficulty perceiving the global structure. This local processing bias is an important factor contributing to neglect and may contribute to the higher prevalence of the disorder following right compared with left hemisphere strokes. In recent years, visuomotor adaptation to rightward-shifting prisms has been introduced as a promising treatment for hemispatial neglect. Explanations for these improvements have genera

Different levels of dorsal stream functioning were teased apart to determine whether the observed deficits in dyslexic readers may exist as early as the retinal level, and to explore the relative contribution that the different aspects of dorsal processing may make to reading. The paradigm combining frequency doubled stimuli with endogenous cueing demonstrated that dyslexic readers possess a retinal level magnocellular deficit. Regression analyses provided evidence to suggest that different levels of dorsal processing relates to various aspects of reading skills, with low-level magnocellular M

In order to explain the cognitive and cerebral mechanisms responsible for the visuospatial peak in autism, and to document its specificity to this condition, a group of eight high-functioning individuals with autism and a visuospatial peak (HFA-P) performed a modified block-design task (BDT; subtest from Wechsler scales) at various levels of perceptual cohesiveness, as well as tasks tapping visuomotor speed, global perception, visual memory, visual search and speed of visual encoding. Their performance was compared with that of 8 autistics without a visuospatial peak (HFA-NP), 10 typically dev

Gordon and Carmon (1976) reported that repeated presentations of an initially novel stimulus were associated with a transfer of cerebral dominance over time (trials) from the right to the left hemisphere. To test the generalizability of these results the proportions of alpha rhythms over the left and right occipital and parietal lobes were measured following the presentation of recurring and nonrecurring complex visual patterns (the Kimura Figures) to the upper or lower, left or right peripheral visual fields. Analysis showed increased electrical activation (as inferred by attenuated proportio

According to the magnocellular theory of dyslexia, otherwise intelligent children may fail to learn to read because of abnormalities in the magnocellular layers of the lateral geniculate nucleus (mLGN). If this were the case, one would predict that dyslexic subjects who show a deficit on low-level psychophysical tasks which tax the magnocellular system would also have deficits on higher-level visual tasks which do not rely on the properties of mLGN cells but depend upon the functioning of areas whose main inputs originate in the mLGN. In other words, magnocellular deficits should be traceable

The pattern electroretinogram (PERG), a noninvasive tool to measure the activity of retinal ganglion cells, shows changes in early glaucoma. We wanted to investigate whether or not the PERG is preferentially affected when the Bjerrum area is stimulated. We recorded the PERG from 17 eyes in 17 patients with initial stages of visual field defects due to open-angle glaucoma and from 10 eyes in 10 normal subjects. Counter-phasing checkerboard patterns were used as visual stimuli with a check size of 0.8 degrees at 16 reversals/s and 98% contrast. Three visual field extents were stimulated: (1) ful

Of the higher disorders associated with posterior cerebral lesions two have received considerable attention in the past decade. These are prosopagnosia, the so-called agnosia for faces, and alexia without agraphia. Major aspects of these disorders are reviewed briefly.

Three atypical features were noted in a patient with prosopagnosia due to a right occipital hematoma: prosopagnosia was unassociated with achromatopsia, spatial disorientation or left visual field alexia; the right visual field was normal and the left field only slightly impaired; the lesion was apparently unilateral.

This case of visual agnosia is of special interest because of its causation by trauma, of the unusually long follow-up (10 1/2 years), and the evidence for dual deficits of recognition and perception. Although most of the findings were characteristic of associative visual agnosia with preserved perceptual function, the poor copying, contrasted to better spontaneous drawing, suggested apperceptive agnosia as well. Prosopagnosia, alexia without agraphia, Balint's syndrome, visual static agnosia and simultanagnosia were also observed. The patient had persisting amnestic syndrome, but no dementia

The primary visual cortex (V1) is extensively studied with a large repertoire of stimuli, yet little is known about its encoding of natural images. Using voltage-sensitive dye imaging in behaving monkeys, we measured neural population response evoked in V1 by natural images presented during a face/scramble discrimination task. The population response showed two distinct phases of activity: an early phase that was spread over most of the imaged area, and a late phase that was spatially confined. To study the detailed relation between the stimulus and the population response, we used a simple en

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Previous studies have demonstrated that as little as 18 hours of sleep deprivation can cause deleterious effects on performance. It has also been suggested that sleep deprivation can cause a "tunnel-vision" effect, in which attention is restricted to the center of the visual field. The current study aimed to replicate these behavioral effects and to examine the electrophysiological underpinnings of these changes.
DESIGN: Repeated-measures experimental study.
SETTING: University laboratory.
PATIENTS OR PARTICIPANTS: Nineteen professional drivers (1 woman; mean age = 45.3 +/

Here we identify a neural correlate of the ability to precisely direct visual attention to locations other than the center of gaze. Human subjects performed a task requiring shifts of visual attention (but not of gaze) from one location to the next within a dense array of targets and distracters while functional MRI was used to map corresponding displacements of neural activation within visual cortex. The cortical topography of the purely attention-driven activity precisely matched the topography of activity evoked by the cued targets when presented in isolation. Such retinotopic mapping of at

BACKGROUND: In recent years, the introduction of visual rehabilitation for patients with homonymous visual field defects has been met with both enthusiasm and caution. Despite the evidence that restitutive training results in expansion of the visual field, several concerns have been raised.
OBJECTIVE: We tested the effectiveness of a new rehabilitative protocol called "Neuro Restoration Training" (NRT) in reducing visual field defects and in restituting visual functions in the restored hemianopic area.
METHODS: Ten patients with homonymous visual field defects (lesion age >6 months) where tr

Emotionally salient cues are detected more readily, remembered better, and evoke greater visual cortical responses compared with neutral stimuli. The current study used concurrent EEG-fMRI recordings to identify large-scale network interactions involved in the amplification of visual cortical activity when viewing aversively conditioned cues. To generate a continuous neural signal from pericalcarine visual cortex, we presented rhythmic (10/sec) phase-reversing gratings, the orientation of which predicted the presence (CS+) or absence (CS-) of a cutaneous electric shock (i.e., the unconditioned

Recent findings suggest that visual objects may be mapped along the ventral occipitotemporal cortex according to their real-world size (Konkle and Oliva, 2012). It has been argued that such mapping does not reflect an abstract, conceptual size representation, but rather the visual or functional properties associated with small versus big real-world objects. To determine whether a more abstract conceptual size representation may affect visual cortical activation we used meaningless geometrical shapes, devoid of semantic or functional associations, which were associated with specific size repres

Visual aided augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) consists of books or technologies that contain visual symbols to supplement spoken language. A common observation concerning some forms of aided AAC is that message preparation can be frustratingly slow. We explored the uses of fMRI to examine the neural correlates of visual search for line drawings on AAC displays in 18 college students under two experimental conditions. Under one condition, the location of the icons remained stable and participants were able to learn the spatial layout of the display. Under the other condition, co

A retinally stabilized object readily undergoes perceptual fading and disappears from consciousness. This startling phenomenon is commonly believed to arise from local bottom-up sensory adaptation to edge information that occurs early in the visual pathway, such as in the lateral geniculate nucleus of the thalamus or retinal ganglion cells. Here we use random dot stereograms to generate perceivable contours or shapes that are not present on the retina and ask whether perceptual fading occurs for such "cortical" contours. Our results show that perceptual fading occurs for "cortical" contours an

Synesthesia is an experience in which stimulation in one sensory or cognitive stream leads to associated experiences in a second, unstimulated stream. Although synesthesia is often referred to as a "neurological condition," it is not listed in the DSM IV or the ICD classifications, as it generally does not interfere with normal daily functioning. However, its high prevalence rate (one in 23) means that synesthesia may be reported by patients who present with other psychiatric symptoms. In this review, I focus on recent research examining the neural basis of the two most intensively studied for

Cognitive function requires a high level of functional interaction between regions of a network supporting cognition. Assuming that brain activation changes denote an advanced state of disease progression, changes in functional connectivity may precede changes in brain activation. The objective of this study was to investigate changes in functional connectivity of the right middle fusiform gyrus (FG) in subjects with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) during performance of a face-matching task. The right middle FG is a key area for processing face stimuli. Brain activity was measured using functi
