Development and validation of the pandemic fear perception and adaptability scale.

INTRODUCTION: Individuals exhibit specific behavioral responses to fear and stress. The Pandemic Fear Perception and Adaptability Scale (PFPA) is a novel instrument designed to assess fear perception and behavioral adaptability in the context of pandemics. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 923 participants in China to evaluate the psychometric properties of the PFPA. After expert review, a 7-item scale was developed, comprising three subscales: self-efficacy, perceived susceptibility, and perceived threat. Classical test theory, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and Rasch …

Edges of perception: balancing sensory loss and potential in assistive technology.

Being deafblind means my perception differs profoundly from those who are conventionally sighted and have non-impaired hearing. A lot of hidden knowledge is to be found in the disparity between these differing experiences that could be of great value in developing assistive technologies that have a broad scope to engage with both disabled and non-disabled users. This article explores the balancing act between sensory loss and the potential inherent in all of us and how this should be part of the design process of haptic assistive technology.Facing the true impact of my sensory loss, I realised…

Early Perception of Intonation in Down Syndrome: Implications for Language Intervention.

Language difficulties have been highlighted as a cornerstone of the developmental profile in Down Syndrome (DS), but very few studies have examined early language abilities in children with DS to determine the initial strengths and weaknesses that might inform early language interventions to support language development in this population. This study focused on the early perception of intonation and examined whether it differed between infants with DS and typically developing (TD) peers. Using a visual habituation paradigm from a previous study on TD infants' ability to perceive the intonation…

Distinct neural processing underlying visual face and object perception in dyslexia.

Developmental dyslexia is a disorder marked by difficulties in reading, spelling, and connecting sounds to written language. The high-level visual dysfunction hypothesis suggests these difficulties may partially arise from abnormalities in high-level visual cognition such as the ability to integrate visual input for higher-order cognitive functions such as reading. Here we examined adult (mean age = 35) dyslexic readers' neural functioning as they recognized identities of nonlinguistic visual objects, specifically houses and faces. We measured two event-related potential (ERP) components, the

Heartfelt gaze: Cardiac afferent signals and vagal tone affect gaze perception.

Perceiving others' gaze direction is an essential aspect of social interactions. The cone of direct gaze (CoDG) refers to the range within which an observer perceives a gaze as looking directly at them. Previous research has demonstrated that self-relevant exteroceptive cues can widen the CoDG. However, the effect of self-relevant interoceptive information on the CoDG remains unknown. This study investigated the contribution of cardiac afferent signals and vagal tone to the perception of gaze from others. We used a modified gaze discrimination task to synchronize face stimuli with various gaze…

Spectral features related to the auditory perception of twang-like voices.

BACKGROUND: To the best of our knowledge, studies on the relationship between spectral energy distribution and the degree of perceived twang-like voices are still sparse. Through an auditory-perceptual test we aimed to explore the spectral features that may relate with the auditory-perception of twang-like voices. METHODS: Ten judges who were blind to the test's tasks and stimuli rated the amount of twang perceived on seventy-six audio samples. The stimuli consisted of twenty voices recorded from eight CCM singers who sustained the vowel [a:] in different pitches, with and without a twang-lik…

Auditory influence on stickiness perception: an fMRI study of multisensory integration.

This study explored how the human brain perceives stickiness through tactile and auditory channels, especially when presented with congruent or incongruent intensity cues. In our behavioral and functional MRI (fMRI) experiments, we presented participants with adhesive tape stimuli at two different intensities. The congruent condition involved providing stickiness stimuli with matching intensity cues in both auditory and tactile channels, whereas the incongruent condition involved cues of different intensities. Behavioral results showed that participants were able to distinguish between the con

Visual and vestibular motion perception in persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD).

Persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD) is a chronic disorder of perceived unsteadiness. Symptoms can be exacerbated in visually complex stationary or moving environment. Visual dependence and increased motion sensitivity are predictors for PPPD but its pathophysiology remains unknown. We hypothesized an abnormal sensory-perceptual scaling mechanism in PPPD and tested visual- and vestibular perceptional thresholds in 32 patients and 28 age-matched healthy control subjects (HC). All participants showed normal vestibular function tests on quantitative testing. Visual motion coherence thr…

Altered Outer Retinal Structure, Electrophysiology and Visual Perception in Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Visual biomarkers of Parkinson's disease (PD) are attractive as the retina is an outpouching of the brain. Although inner retinal neurodegeneration in PD is well-established this has overlap with other neurodegenerative diseases and thus outer retinal (photoreceptor) measures warrant further investigation. OBJECTIVE: To examine in a cross-sectional study whether clinically implementable measures targeting outer retinal function and structure can differentiate PD from healthy ageing and whether these are sensitive to intraday levodopa (L-DOPA) dosing. METHODS: Centre-surround perc

The High/Low Frequency Balance Drives Tactile Perception of Noisy Vibrations.

Noisy vibrotactile signals transmitted during tactile explorations of an object provide precious information on the nature of its surface. Understanding the link between signal properties and how they are interpreted by the tactile sensory system remains challenging. In this paper, we investigated human perception of broadband, stationary vibrations recorded during exploration of textures and reproduced using a vibrotactile actuator. Since intensity is a well-established perceptual attribute, we here focused on the relevance of the spectral content. The stimuli were first equalized in perceive…
