An association of early puberty with disordered eating and anxiety in a population of undergraduate women and men.

Eating and anxiety disorders are more prevalent in females, increase during adolescence, and are associated with early pubertal development. This study examined whether timing of puberty onset is associated with disordered eating and anxiety in a large sample of postpubertal male and female undergraduate students. Self-report questionnaires assessed timing of puberty, disordered eating, anxiety, alcohol use, personality, and sensation seeking. Females scored significantly higher on measures of disordered eating (binge eating, dietary restraint, eating concerns, and weight and shape concerns) a

[Psychosocial rehabilitation at the dawn of the 21st century. I: Principles, population targets, and pathologic causes].

The relatively recent development of the psychosocial rehabilitation has its origins mainly in the progress of modern psychopharmacology, the assertion of the rights of the patients and the result of the studies showing that the evolution of persons suffering from severe and persistent mental illnesses can prove to be positive in many cases. In spite of the heterogeneity of the experiences and of the theoretical references, the core principles of the psychosocial rehabilitation imposed themselves. These principles can be classified according to three levels, that of relational ethics, that of

A Jacksonian and biopsychosocial hypothesis concerning borderline and related phenomena.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper is to develop an aetiological model for borderline personality disorder. METHOD: The postulates of Hughlings Jackson are used to provide a preliminary explanatory framework for borderline phenomena. As a necessary background to this discussion, the findings concerning abuse in the early history of borderline personality disorder (BPD) and other conditions, notably somatisation disorder and dissociative states, are briefly reviewed. Other data, including family studies, which might have significance in the aetiology of BPD are also reviewed. RESULTS: The hypot

Nicotine withdrawal in women.

Associations between self-report symptom profiles for nicotine withdrawal, personality (TPQ, EPQ-R), life-time history of psychopathology and smoking history were examined in data obtained from 553 female adult Australian twins (246 regular smokers), aged 32-48 years, who had participated in a telephone interview survey that included life-time assessments of smoking history, nicotine dependence and symptoms of withdrawal. Two hundred and two respondents were from high-risk pairs where either the respondent or the respondent's co-twin had reported a life-time history of alcohol dependence; 351

[Panic attack and panic disorder in the child and adolescent].

In the light of the current interest in the development of this disorder in adults, a number of recent studies have been devoted to the condition in children and adolescents. These papers include retrospective studies of adults suffering from the disorder, clinical reports on children or adolescents with the same problems, epidemiological studies of children and adolescents consulting psychiatrists, epidemiological studies of the general population, family studies, and studies of chemotherapeutic treatments. The conclusion from these papers is that many children and adolescents who present wit

[Is the developmental model accurate for all psychiatric disorders?].

In the 1980's a neurodevelopmental hypothesis of schizophrenia was proposed. Since that time, the role of early developmental age as a risk period for action of etiological factors in psychosis was confirmed. Additionally, many disturbances of pre-schizophrenic persons in the developmental age were demonstrated. Recently published longitudinal cohort studies indicate that majority of the psychiatric disorders other than schizophrenia are preceded by occurrence of psychiatric disorders in childhood and early adolescence. Moreover, in numerous studies of adult anxiety and mood disorders, the rol

Early sexual abuse and nightmares in the analysis of adults.

An examination of the nightmares of four adults in analysis who had been sexually abused as children revealed a characteristic distortion of the body representation as it appeared in the manifest content of the dream. The authors believe that childhood sexual trauma has profound and pervasive effects on the development and consolidation of the body image. Experienced as a grave assault on body integrity and function, it mobilizes primitive anxieties and specific genital anxieties, resulting in distortion, fragmentation, or disintegration of the body representation. The frequently observed mult

Examining differential item functioning and group differences across student and community samples on the Personality Inventory for the DSM-V-Short Form.

UNLABELLED: This study forms one part of a larger project of evaluating the Personality Inventory for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual-V (DSM-V) Short Form (PID-5-SF) in the South African context. Among others, its objectives include investigating its psychometric properties and the development of preliminary norms. For the project, non-clinical adult data were collected from a community sample (n = 729) and from students (n = 629). To determine if the data can be combined into a single adult sample for further research, this initial study seeks to investigate if there are any differences

Binge drinking trajectories across adolescence and early adulthood: Associations with genetic influences for dual-systems impulsive personality traits, alcohol consumption, and alcohol use disorder.

Binge drinking is a relatively common pattern of alcohol use among youth with normative trajectories peaking in emerging and early adulthood. Frequent binge drinking is a critical risk factor not only for the development of alcohol use disorders (AUDs) but also for increased odds of alcohol-related injury and death and thus constitutes a significant public health concern. Changes in binge drinking across development are strongly associated with individual differences and changes in impulsive personality traits, which have been hypothesized as intermediate phenotypes associated with genetic ris

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) deficiency under treatment: psychological and sexual functioning impacts.

OBJECTIVE: GnRH (gonadotropin releasing hormone) is a crucial hormone for sexual development, puberty, and fertility, and its deficiency leads to hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (HH), which causes abnormal secondary sexual development and infertility. The combination of the lack of sense of smell, i.e., anosmia, and HH is a type of GnRH deficiency known as Kallmann syndrome, which affects both men and women. The impact of Kallmann syndrome can be very severe and causes a variety of psychological problems in patients. The aim of the present study was to investigate psychopathology, sexuality, and

[The Impact of NICE Guidance on UK Psychiatry].

The UK National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) is a non-departmental public body accountable to the Department of Health. NICE was established in 1999 in an attempt to reduce variability in the availability and quality of medical services in NHS to end the so-called postcode lottery. Since its establishment NICE has acquired an international reputation for the development of high quality, evidence-based clinical guidelines. NICE also makes cost-benefit assessments of certain technologies on the basis of effectiveness and cost effectiveness. In order to develop a NICE guideline

Catching Up on Mortality, Falling Behind on Disability: A Dynamic Decomposition of the Health-Adjusted Life Expectancy Gap between Higher-Income and Lower-Income Countries.

Background: Global health inequalities are conventionally assessed through the mortality gap, yet the joint contribution of mortality and disability to health-adjusted life expectancy (HALE) gap and their dynamic evolution remain poorly understood. We aim to decompose the HALE gap between higher-income and lower-income countries into mortality and disability drivers, separate long-term trends from transient fluctuations, and reveal heterogeneity within the low-income group. Methods: Using data from the Global Burden of Disease Study for 199 countries (122 higher-income and 77 lower-income) fro

Development of literacy skills for Japanese deaf and hard-of-hearing children.

We compared the reading development of 77 deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) Japanese children, aged 5-7 (40 females), with 139 of their hearing peers (74 females) in 2018. We assessed each group's phonological awareness (PA), grammar, vocabulary, and reading of hiragana (Japanese orthography children learn first). DHH children showed significant delays in grammar and vocabulary but only a slight delay in PA. Younger DHH children scored better than their hearing peers in reading. Although PA predicted reading for hearing children, reading predicted PA for DHH children. PA partially explained gramm

Mercy Pregnancy and Emotional Well-being Study (MPEWS): Understanding maternal mental health, fetal programming and child development. Study design and cohort profile.

Maternal mental health represents a significant global health burden. The Mercy Pregnancy and Emotional Well-being Study (MPEWS) was established to provide a comprehensive investigation of early developmental mechanisms and modifiers for maternal, fetal and child emotional well-being. MPEWS is a prospective, longitudinal study from pregnancy to 36 months postpartum that includes diagnostic measures of maternal mental health, observational measures of the mother-infant relationship, measures of child development, and repeat biological sampling. A total of 282 pregnant women were recruited in ea

Syphilis in the Americas: a protocol for a systematic review of syphilis prevalence and incidence in four high-risk groups, 1980-2016.

BACKGROUND: Syphilis infection has recently resurfaced as a significant public health problem. Although there has been a tremendous amount of research on the epidemiology of syphilis, there has been limited work done to synthesize the extensive body of research and systematically estimate patterns of disease within high-risk groups in the Americas. The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to (1) summarize recent patterns of syphilis infection in North and South America among four high-risk groups (MSM, transgender women, sex workers, and incarcerated individuals) from 1980 to

Development of schizotypal symptoms following psychiatric disorders in childhood or adolescence.

It was examined how juvenile psychiatric disorders and adult schizotypal symptoms are associated. 731 patients of the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry of the University Medical Centre Utrecht, the Netherlands, with mean age of 12.1 years (SD = 4.0) were reassessed at the mean age of 27.9 years (SD = 5.7) for adult schizotypal symptoms using the Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire-Revised (Vollema, Schizophr Bull 26(3):565-575, 2000). Differences between 13 juvenile DSM categories and normal controls (n = 80) on adult schizotypal total and factor scores were analyzed, using (M)AN

Parent-reported problems in 211 adopted children: some risk and protective factors.

Parents of 211 adopted children, now young adults, were interviewed about their children's behaviour and development during childhood and adolescence. The children were placed for adoption at different ages. The quality of children's pre-placement care also varied, older-placed children generally experiencing adverse backgrounds prior to joining their adoptive parents. Depending on their quality of pre-placement care, the children were placed in one of three groups for the purposes of analysis: (a) baby adoptions, (b) older-children adoptions in which children had enjoyed satisfactory care as
