A successful composite graft and total aortic arch replacement for aortic valvular disease and thoracic aneurysm from the ascending aorta to the distal aortic arch with ITP is reported in a 68-year-old male. For seven years the ITP was treated with corticosteroids, the platelet count was 5.6 x 10(4)/mm3 on admission. We have evaluated the use of laboratory parameters to predict the risk of adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) at an early stage after major trauma. Patients with lung contusion were excluded. Five of 29 patients fulfilled our criteria of ARDS, i.e. PaO2/FiO2 less than or equal to 38. They showed lower platelet counts and antiplasmin as well as a tendency to lower antithrombin III, fibrinogen, and plasminogen. ANIMALS: 542 client-owned dogs.
PROCEDURES: Medical records of dogs that underwent splenectomy for splenic masses at 2 referral institutions were reviewed.
