This article reviews the anatomy of synovial-lined structures around the knee joint including the joint capsule, plicae, bursae, and tendon sheaths. Ultrasound has been used to examine the infant hip for more than 20 years. Clinical neonatal hip screening is performed to identify hip dysplasia and start therapy as soon as possible. Identification of anatomical structures and standard plane with three reference points are the most important features of the method. Ultrasound is used in the determination of head containment in hips with Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease (LCPD). Slipped capital epiphysis and capsular distension can be diagnosed by ultrasound as well.

BACKGROUND: The management of fever without source in young children is controversial.
AIM: To analyse the management approach in our paediatric emergency room, and to correlate it to existing practice guidelines.
METHODS: We indexed 2176 consecutive patients, aged 1 to 36 mo, seen in our emergency department because of fever > or = 38.5 degrees C. We report on a 22- year-old woman with postpartum dissection of the left anterior descending artery and the intermediate branch.
