Predicting error in detecting mammographic masses among radiology trainees using statistical models based on BI-RADS features.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to explore Breast Imaging-Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) features as predictors of individual errors made by trainees when detecting masses in mammograms. METHODS: Ten radiology trainees and three expert breast imagers reviewed 100 mammograms comprised of bilateral medial lateral oblique and craniocaudal views on a research workstation. The cases consisted of normal and biopsy proven benign and malignant masses. For cases with actionable abnormalities, the experts recorded breast (density and axillary lymph nodes) and mass (shape, margin, and density

Timing of premature physeal closure in Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease.

PURPOSE: Premature physeal closure of the proximal femoral physis has been reported in Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease (LCPD). However, the timing of its occurrence had not yet been reported. We proposed (1) to determine the timing of premature physeal closure in unilateral LCPD with serial radiographic evaluation, and (2) to evaluate the relationship between the premature physeal closure and Herring classification, leg-length discrepancy (LLD), Stulberg classification, and trochanteric overgrowth. METHODS: We performed a retrospective study with serial radiographs of 27 patients diagnosed with LC

[Evaluation of the sagittal profile in patients with thoracic adolescent idiopathic scoliosis Lenke type 1 following posterior correction].

INTRODUCTION: The principle philosophy of posterior spinal instrumentation and fusion (PSIF) for the treatment of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) has changed during recent decades. In the past the treatment of AIS mainly focused on correction of the major curve in the frontal plane while the sagittal profile and balancing were only of inferior interest in treatment planning. Various long-term outcome studies have demonstrated that many AIS patients developed a flatback syndrome (decrease of thoracic kyphosis and lumbar lordosis) associated with pain. It was concluded that treatment of AI

Alignment of impacted maxillary canines: critical analysis of eruption path and treatment time.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate a possible correlation between treatment time and the distance covered by the canine tip during forced eruption of impacted maxillary canines. We also addressed the question whether it is possible to estimate the treatment time based on this data. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Orthopantomograms of 57 juvenile patients below 18 years of age with at least one palatally impacted canine were examined. We determined the position of the canine in relation to the neighboring teeth, its axial inclination and distance to the occlusal plane. We also introduced

Fully automatic quantification of knee osteoarthritis severity on plain radiographs.

OBJECTIVE: Although knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a major public health issue causing chronic disability, there is no objective or accurate method for measurement of the structural severity in general clinical practice. Here we have established a fully automatic program KOACAD (knee OA computer-aided diagnosis) to quantify the major OA parameters on plain knee radiographs, validated the reproducibility and reliability, and investigated the association of the parameters with knee pain. METHODS: KOACAD was programmed to measure joint space narrowing at medial and lateral sides, osteophyte formati

[Sialography with digital image processing screens].

We recorded 45 sialograms on digital screens and discuss the use of a digital recording, processing and screening system for the diagnosis of inflammation, tumours and stones of the major salivary glands. Thirty-three investigations of a total of 33 parotid sialograms and 12 submandibular sialograms were analysed. A ductal examination with small volumes of soluble contrast media, permitting painless examination, was possible in all cases due to excellent homogeneous optical density, satisfactory detail and good contrast.

AI-assisted detection for chest X-rays (AID-CXR): a multi-reader multi-case study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: A chest X-ray (CXR) is the most common imaging investigation performed worldwide. Advances in machine learning and computer vision technologies have led to the development of several artificial intelligence (AI) tools to detect abnormalities on CXRs, which may expand diagnostic support to a wider field of health professionals. There is a paucity of evidence on the impact of AI algorithms in assisting healthcare professionals (other than radiologists) who regularly review CXR images in their daily practice. AIMS: To assess the utility of an AI-based CXR interpretation tool in ass

Quantification of the minimal luminal cross-sectional area after coronary stenting by two- and three-dimensional intravascular ultrasound versus edge detection and videodensitometry.

The use of 2-dimensional intravascular ultrasound (2-D IVUS) to improve the outcome of coronary stenting has gained clinical acceptance, and recently 3-D IVUS has been introduced to clinical practice. However, there have been no comprehensive studies comparing the measurements of the coronary dimensions after stenting obtained by the different approaches of IVUS and quantitative coronary angiography. We examined the minimal luminal cross-sectional area of 38 stents using 2-D IVUS, 3-D IVUS, and 2 standard methods of quantitative coronary angiography, edge detection (ED) and videodensitometry (

Computer-assisted densitometric image analysis (CADIA) of previously sealed carious teeth: a pilot study.

Previous studies have shown that occlusal dental caries can be arrested with sealants. Radiographic monitoring must be performed to ensure success. Standardized sequential bitewing radiographs over a 10-year interval of four patients who had sealed composite restorations placed without caries removal were digitized and analyzed using the CADIA algorithm. CADIA values for the 10-year period were analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), and showed no significant change in radiographic density for this interval (P > 0.05), which is suggestive of arrested dental caries.
