Sequencing of individual clones from a newly established cDNA library from the chemoresistant Hodgkin's lymphoma cell line L-1236 led to the isolation of a cDNA clone corresponding to a short sequence from chromosome 1. BACKGROUND: We investigated perinatal factors in relation to bone cancer subtypes, osteosarcoma (OS), Ewing Sarcoma (ES) and chondrosarcoma (CS).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: All cases in Norway (1970-2009), Sweden (1974-2009) and Denmark (1980-2010)<43 years were included (n=914); 10 controls per case were selected from birth registries (which provided information on pregnancies) matched on birth country, sex and birth year (n=9140). BACKGROUND: Second malignant neoplasms (SMNs) have become a primary concern in evaluating long-term effects of treatment in pediatric oncology. Thyroid carcinoma has proven to be a common SMN.
METHODS: In a multicenter study involving 58 hospitals in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, 18 of 239 (7.5%) SMNs documented following first malignant neoplasm (FMN) in childhood were thyroid carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Recently, uterine transposition has been proposed as a novel technique for fertility preservation in young females undergoing radiation therapy for pelvic malignancies.

Data from 44 patients (23 males, 21 females) with a median age of 39 (range 13-80) years who underwent total hip arthroplasty for proximal femoral tumours (1994-2004) were analysed. We describe a case of a desmoplastic brain tumor which was initially resected from the right fronto-temporal region in a 2 year-old boy. This nodular, calcified tumor was vascularized by the internal carotid artery and the middle meningeal artery branches. Grossly, it contained several mucoid cysts. Light microscopy showed cords or nests of small cuboidal cells surrounded by a loose connective tissue and desmoplastic areas containing fibers and spindle cells. We retrospectively analyzed the incidence and risk factors for veno-occlusive disease (VOD) in 83 consecutive children with solid tumors, who underwent autologous blood or bone marrow (BM) transplantation at UCSF between 1992 and 2000. BACKGROUND: Ifosfamide is successfully employed in the treatment of bone and soft tissue sarcomas in children and young adults. Used at high doses (HDI) the drug may cause severe multiorgan toxicity. Peripheral neuropathy is a less well-known side effect that may limit its use. We describe a 16-year-old girl with a Ewing sarcoma who was given post-operative treatment with HDI (15 mg/m(2) infused over 5 days). After the second course she experienced paresthesias in both feet. After the third course she developed signs of severe toxicity in the CNS, kidneys, heart, and severe pain in her feet.

We report the case of a catheter-related bloodstream infection caused by Chryseobacterium indologenes, an uncommon and multi-resistant pathogen, in a pediatric patient with a long-term vascular access device placed for chemotherapy treatment. The infection was successfully treated with ciprofloxacin antibiotic-lock therapy. This is the first report on successful salvage of a long-term device colonized by multi-resistant Chryseobacterium indologenes.
