A clinical trial of ivermectin against eyeworms in German Shepherd military working dogs.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if monthly ivermectin was efficacious in reducing the observed incidence of eyeworms over a period of 2 months as compared with normal husbandry practices in a population of Republic of Korea Army military working dogs (MWDs). METHODS: Prospective observation of 114 German Shepherd MWDs in a randomized, double-blind, controlled clinical trial. MWDs were randomly assigned to either a treatment group receiving a monthly dose of 0.2 mg/kg BW ivermectin orally, or to a control group given an equivalent dose volume and frequency of a saline placebo. A quantitative numerical

Initial trauma management in advanced pregnancy.

The principles enshrined in existing trauma resuscitation protocols for treating nonpregnant trauma victims should also be applied to the pregnant patient. In addition, left tilt of the pregnant patient (or the back board) and supplement oxygen are mandatory. The patient should be treated by a multidisciplinary team, preferably in a trauma center. Early intubation is recommended, but should be performed, where possible, by an experienced physician. The physician should be aware of the different physiologic and laboratory values in normal pregnancy. Fetal monitoring is important to assess both

Health issues of air travel.

Every day in the United States the airline industry boards over 1.7 million passengers for a total of 600 million passengers per year. As these passengers enter the cabin of their aircraft few are aware of the artificial environment that will protect them from the hazards of flight. Passengers are exposed to reduced atmospheric pressure, reduced available oxygen, noise, vibration, and are subject to below zero temperatures that are only a quarter inch away-the thickness of the aircraft's skin. Over the past decade there have been both technical and lay articles written on the perception of poo

Induced hypothermia during emergency department thoracotomy: an animal model.

BACKGROUND: Induced hypothermia is used clinically to prevent ischemic injury during elective procedures. We present an animal model of asanguinous hypothermic (10 degrees C) circulatory arrest, induced through a left anterior lateral thoracotomy after exsanguinating uncontrolled hemorrhage. METHODS: Through a left anterior thoracotomy, 26 swine (45-70 kg) sustained a laceration of the descending thoracic aorta, producing exsanguinating uncontrolled hemorrhage. After 5 minutes of severe hypotension (systolic BP <20 mm Hg), a 22 French Foley catheter was directed cephalad through the enlarged

Quantifying the Value of Perfect Information in Emergency Vaccination Campaigns.

Foot-and-mouth disease outbreaks in non-endemic countries can lead to large economic costs and livestock losses but the use of vaccination has been contentious, partly due to uncertainty about emergency FMD vaccination. Value of information methods can be applied to disease outbreak problems such as FMD in order to investigate the performance improvement from resolving uncertainties. Here we calculate the expected value of resolving uncertainty about vaccine efficacy, time delay to immunity after vaccination and daily vaccination capacity for a hypothetical FMD outbreak in the UK. If it were p

Causes of gastrointestinal colic at an equine referral hospital in South Africa (1998-2007).

The most common causes of gastrointestinal colic at an equine referral hospital in South Africa were determined following retrieval of the medical records of horses admitted during a 10-year study period. The study included 935 horses of which 28% were admitted after hours. Most horses were Thoroughbreds (54%), male (57%), with a mean age of 8.2 years and originated from the Gauteng Province (81%). Heart rate (98%), mucous membrane colour (95%) and auscultation of the abdomen (91%) were the clinical data commonly obtained at admission. Packed cell volume, total serum protein and white cell cou

Prehospital hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier resuscitation attenuates postinjury acute lung injury.

BACKGROUND: Crystalloid infusion has been the standard prehospital fluid resuscitation in the United States for the past 35 years, but the emergence of a safe and effective hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier (HBOC) may change that practice. The purpose of this in vivo study is to simulate an existing multicenter prehospital trial of HBOC versus crystalloid to determine the effects in a controlled 2-event construct of postinjury multiple organ failure. METHODS: Rats underwent hemorrhagic shock (30 mm Hg x 45 min) and were resuscitated over 2 hours in a clinically relevant design: 2 x volume of sh

The epidemiology of bite and scratch injuries by vertebrate animals in Switzerland.

Pet and wildlife populations are a potential source of various public health problems, and injuries and complications due to animal bites and scratches are the most obvious. As no population based data on the frequency of animal bites were available at a national level in Switzerland, a study was conducted by the Swiss Sentinel Surveillance Network. The objectives of this study were to estimate the incidence of medical consultations due to bite and scratch injuries in humans caused by vertebrate animals, to identify possible risk factors, and to assess bite management habits in primary health

Insecticide-treated bed nets in rural Bangladesh: their potential role in the visceral leishmaniasis elimination programme.

OBJECTIVE: To analyse the feasibility, acceptability and effectiveness of insecticide-treated bed nets with slow-release insecticides (KO Tab 123) as an option for kala-azar vector management in Bangladesh. METHODS: Intervention study involving an insecticide dipping programme through village health workers supervised by public health officers covering 6967 households in Mymensingh and 8287 in Rajshahi district. In a subsample of households, sandfly densities at baseline, 1, 12 and 18 months were measured with CDC light traps both in intervention and control areas. Bioassays were performed fo

Towards elimination of lymphatic filariasis: social mobilization issues and challenges in mass drug administration with anti-filarial drugs in Tamil Nadu, South India.

India is a signatory to World Health Assembly resolution for elimination of lymphatic filariasis (LF) and National Health Policy has set the goal of LF elimination by 2015. Annual mass drug administration (MDA) is ongoing in endemic districts since 1996-97. Compliance rate is a crucial factor in achieving elimination and was assessed in three districts of Tamil Nadu for 10th and 11th treatment rounds (TRs). An in-depth study assessed the impact of social mobilization by drug distributors (DDs) in two areas from each of the three districts. Overall coverage and compliance for assessed TRs were

Multi-scale drivers of spontaneous plant diversity in urban residential green spaces across dispersal modes: Implications for ecological planning.

Residential green spaces (RGSs) are ubiquitous elements of the urban fabric and can function as low-maintenance, nature-based solutions that reconnect fragmented habitats and deliver ecosystem services. Yet the mechanisms by which multi-scale environments shape spontaneous plant diversity across seed-dispersal modes remain poorly understood. We surveyed 138 RGSs in Fuzhou, China, recording 382 spontaneous plant species, and classifying them into wind-dispersed (anemochory), animal-dispersed (zoochory), water-dispersed (hydrochory), and self-dispersed (autochory). Using Multiscale Geographicall

Drivers of rabies post-exposure prophylaxis noncompletion in Cambodia, 2019 to 2022.

BACKGROUND: Achieving the "Zero by 30" goal-zero human deaths due to dog-mediated rabies by 2030-depends heavily on the timely and complete administration of post-exposure prophylaxis vaccination (PEPV) to exposed individuals. This study aims to assess trends and evaluate rabies PEPV noncompletion following the introduction of the abridged 1-week protocol, and identify its drivers in Cambodia, which bears a high rabies burden. METHODOLOGY: A retrospective analysis of patients attending the three Institut Pasteur du Cambodge (IPC) rabies prevention centers (RPCs) between 2019 and 2022 was cond

Characterising the distribution of mangroves along the southern coast of Vietnam using multi-spectral indices and a deep learning model.

Mangroves are an ecologically and economically valuable ecosystem that provides a range of ecological services, including habitat for a diverse range of plant and animal species, protection of coastlines from erosion and storms, carbon sequestration, and improvement of water quality. Despite their significant ecological role, in many areas, including in Vietnam, large scale losses have occurred, although restoration efforts have been underway. Understanding the scale of the loss and the efficacy of restoration requires high resolution temporal monitoring of mangrove cover on large scales. We h

Bovine herpesvirus-1 in three major milk sheds of Ethiopia: Serostatus and association with reproductive disorders in dairy cattle.

Bovine herpesvirus-1 (BHV-1) causes infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR), and infectious pustular vulvovaginitis (IPV) in cows and infectious pustular balanopostitis (IPB) in bulls worldwide. Infection of seronegative cattle with BHV-1 leads to abortion, retention of fetal membranes, increased service per conception, metritis and oophoritis. As part of an ongoing study on infectious causes of reproductive disorders in Ethiopia, this investigation aims at assessing the role of BHV-1 in the disorders and the risk factors affecting its seroprevalence. A cross-sectional study was conducted on a
