Extrauterine Retroperitoneal Leiomyomas: 3 Case Reports and Review of the Literature.

Leiomyomas are benign mesenchymal tumors which originate from smooth muscle cells. Extrauterine leiomyomas are rare and they may arise where smooth muscle cells are found. Their diagnosis is challenging due to their heterogeneous ways of presentation. Histological analysis may reveal areas of sarcomatous differentiation; therefore, complete resection of the entire tumor is the only curative treatment. There is no adjuvant therapy proved to increase overall survival. It is essential to develop a standardized protocol, detailing how to follow up these patients since it is not reported in the lit

Recent Advances in the Design and Synthesis of Small Molecule Carbonic Anhydrase IX Inhibitors.

Human carbonic anhydrase (CA) IX is a tumor-associated protein since it is scarcely present in normal tissues but highly overexpressed in a large number of solid tumors, where it actively contributes to survival and metastatic spread of tumor cells. A variety of approaches and design strategies were reported that afford CA IX/XII specific inhibitors and avoid the compromising effects of isoforms-promiscuous compounds. CA IX inhibitors hybrids/conjugates have become an important scaffold to design therapeutic agents with both CA inhibition and anti-cancer effects. In this review, we firstly pre

Oropharyngeal Trichomonosis Due to Trichomonas gypaetinii in a Cinereous Vulture ( Aegypius monachus) Fledgling in Spain.

A juvenile Cinereous Vulture ( Aegypius monachus) fledgling was found disorientated on the roof of a building in Madrid City, Spain, in October 2016. A veterinary examination revealed multiple plaques distributed throughout the oropharyngeal cavity. Lesions were located under the tongue and at the choanal slit, hard palate, and esophagus opening and ranged from 2 to 7 mm, coalescing in areas up to 2 cm, with a yellowish color of the surface. Motile trichomonad trophozoites were detected in fresh wet mount smears from the lesions. Sequence analysis of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS)1/5.8S

Geographical variation of sporadic Legionnaires' disease analysed in a grid model.

The aim was to analyse variation in incidence of sporadic Legionnaires' disease in a geographical information system in three time periods (1990-2005) by the application of a grid model and to assess the model's validity by analysing variation according to grid position. Coordinates of the addresses at time of disease of 606 confirmed cases with Legionnaires' disease were obtained. The incidence was calculated in cells of 10 x 10 km in 25 different grids superimposed on a map of Denmark. A 95% and 99% threshold was applied to identify cells with excess incidence representing potential clusters

Phylogenetic analysis of the small hydrophobic (SH) gene of mumps virus in Korea: identification of a new genotype.

Viral RNAs extracted from fifteen mumps virus isolated from throat swab, saliva, blood, urine or CSF during mumps epidemics between 1997-1998 in Korea were amplified by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and compared by nucleotide sequencing of the small hydrophobic (SH) gene. The deduced amino acid sequences of the SH gene were aligned with the published sequences of mumps virus isolated in different geographic areas. A comparison of the SH gene of mumps viruses in Korea indicated 96.2-100% and 91.2-100% similarity at the nucleotide and amino acid levels, respectively. P

Small RNA sequencing identifies T cell-derived tsRNAs as novel biomarkers for diagnosis and clinical assessment of rheumatoid arthritis.

OBJECTIVE: The functional role of tRNA-derived small RNAs (tsRNAs) in CD3+ T lymphocytes in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) remains unclear. This study aimed to characterize their expression profile and evaluate their biomarker potential in RA. METHODS: Small RNA sequencing of CD3+ T lymphocytes was performed to profile tsRNA expression. Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes enrichment analyses were employed to explore associated pathways. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was used to verify the differentially expressed tsRNAs. Receiver operating charact

First report of Taenia arctos (Cestoda: Taeniidae) from brown bears (Ursus arctos) in Romania.

BACKGROUND: The brown bear (Ursus arctos) is an apex predator with significant ecological importance and serves as a valuable indicator species for monitoring parasitic burdens in forest ecosystems. Owing to its complex ecology and varied diet, this species may play a key role in the life cycle of numerous pathogens, including cestodes of the genus Taenia, such as the recently described Taenia arctos. Among the potential intermediate hosts for T. arctos is the moose (Alces alces), a species sporadically present in northern Romania, where its habitat may overlap with that of U. arctos. In this

A novel variant of NOTCH2 causes skeletal fragility.

A 2-month-old female child presented with a low-trauma femoral fracture, low bone mass, bowing of long bones, loss of height of a thoracic vertebra, and Wormian bones. Exome sequencing revealed the presence of a novel heterozygous 4006G > C pG1336R mutation in exon 25 of NOTCH2 in the child and her father. In silico analysis considered the variant as likely deleterious. CRISPR/Cas9 was used to introduce the Notch24006G>C mutation into Notch2 to create Notch2em1Ecan mutant mice. Homozygous Notch2em1Ecan mutant mice were active, appeared healthy, had normal femoral length, but lower weights than

Unravelling Plasma Extracellular Vesicle Diversity With Optimised Spectral Flow Cytometry.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are crucial for intercellular communication and are found in various biological fluids. The identification and immunophenotyping of such small particles continue to pose significant challenges. Here, we have developed a workflow for the optimisation of a next-generation panel for in-depth immunophenotyping of circulating plasma EVs using spectral flow cytometry. Our data collection followed a multistep optimisation phase for both instrument setup and 21-colour panel design, thus maximising fluorescent signal recovery. This spectral approach enabled the identificati

Large-scale analysis of structural brain asymmetries during neurodevelopment: Associations with age and sex in 4265 children and adolescents.

Only a small number of studies have assessed structural differences between the two hemispheres during childhood and adolescence. However, the existing findings lack consistency or are restricted to a particular brain region, a specific brain feature, or a relatively narrow age range. Here, we investigated associations between brain asymmetry and age as well as sex in one of the largest pediatric samples to date (n = 4265), aged 1-18 years, scanned at 69 sites participating in the ENIGMA (Enhancing NeuroImaging Genetics through Meta-Analysis) consortium. Our study revealed that significant bra

Developing a Novel Methodology by Integrating Deep Learning and HMM for Segmentation of Retinal Blood Vessels in Fundus Images.

Accurate segregation of retinal blood vessels network plays a crucial role in clinical assessments, treatments, and rehabilitation process. Owing to the presence of acquisition and instrumentation anomalies, precise tracking of vessels network is challenging. For this, a new fundus image segmentation framework is proposed by combining deep neural networks, and hidden Markov model. It has three main modules: the Atrous spatial pyramid pooling-based encoder, the decoder, and hidden Markov model vessel tracker. The encoder utilized modified ResNet18 deep neural networks model for low-and-high-lev
