BACKGROUND: Public health measures to control the COVID-19 pandemic have led to feelings of loneliness among older adults, which, prior to COVID, has been associated with subsequent morbidity and mortality. We sought to identify differences in feelings of loneliness, sadness, and social disconnection early in the pandemic across racial groups, and possible mitigating factors.
METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional analysis using the weighted nationally-representative Medicare Current Beneficiaries Survey COVID-19 supplement, collected summer 2020. We included all Medicare beneficiaries aged

BACKGROUND: Lots of patients with bipolar disorder (BD) continue to have residual symptoms after treatment in their remission, BD exhibits intricate characteristics and transformation patterns in its residual symptoms, residual symptoms of different polarities and degrees can mix with and transform to each other. There is a need for further investigation of BD as a comprehensive multivariate disease system. The current research lacks network analyses focusing on BD's residual and subsyndromal symptoms.
METHODS: 242 patients were included with bipolar disorder in remission. We compared demogra

Research shows that sexual assault (SA) can impact survivors' informal social network members (e.g., friend, family member, romantic partner), who are the most frequently told persons about the assault by women-identified survivors. However, little qualitative work has investigated the impacts on informal support providers (SPs) receiving disclosures of alcohol/drug-related assault, an understudied form of SA. The current qualitative interview study examines the impacts of SA disclosures on informal SPs (N = 27) drawn from a dyadic survivor-SP interview sample using descriptive thematic analys

This work investigates the relationship between goals and mitigation behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic in Italy. Study 1 (pilot) identified goals ascribed to following and violating mitigation-related indications. Study 2 investigated the structure of and link between COVID-related goals and behaviors in a large community sample (N = 995, 301 men). Our results showed substantial relationships between goals and behaviors. Goals were best described by a bi-dimensional structure (being safe vs. being free), whereas behaviors clustered into a three-component structure (hygiene, distancing, go

Contact tracing is one of the most important control measures deployed during epidemics and pandemics, relying on the identification of contacts of known infected individuals. A network perspective is therefore essential for its accurate modelling. Pairwise models have been used extensively to study contact tracing, but their analysis typically depends on a decoupling assumption-most commonly that contact tracing operates on a much faster timescale than disease transmission. Furthermore, contact tracing models often assume that each infected individual becomes a contact tracing-triggering node

BACKGROUND: HIV testing is an essential gateway to HIV prevention and treatment thus controlling the HIV epidemic. More innovative interventions are needed to increase HIV testing among men who have sex with men (MSM) since their testing rate is still low. We proposed an online HIV test results exchange mechanism whereby the one without a certified online HIV report will be asked to test HIV for exchanging HIV report with others. The exchange mechanism is developed as an extension to the existing online HIV testing service system. Through the extended system, MSM can obtain certified online HI

BACKGROUND: During humanitarian crises, women face both heightened vulnerabilities and a disruption to their social networks. Previous research points to the positive impact of women's collectives in low-income settings, but less is known about the distinct forms, mechanisms, and consequences of the social support that emerges from these collectives, particularly for women affected by conflict. Recognizing the importance of social support in such contexts, this study utilizes the photovoice methodology to examine the dynamics of social support across women's collectives in three distinct setti

UNLABELLED: Sexual assault occurring in the context of intimate partner violence (IPV) relationships has received much less attention in the literature on sexual assault. Studies of both survivors and their informal support network members are also lacking in both sexual assault and IPV literatures.
PURPOSE: The current study's purpose was to examine sexual assault survivors' experiences where intimate partner violence was mentioned as part of their narratives.
METHOD: Survivors and their informal support providers (SP; e.g., family, friends, romantic partners) were interviewed separately ab

BACKGROUND: The mental health of the older adult in western rural areas is an area of growing concern. Mental health, as defined by the World Health Organization, encompasses emotional, psychological, and social well-being, affecting how individuals think, feel, and act. In this study, we operationalize mental health through four validated dimensions: depression (emotional well-being), anxiety (psychological stability), loneliness (social connectedness), and life satisfaction (overall subjective well-being), which together provide a comprehensive assessment of mental health status. IMPORTANCE: Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) is preventable but underdiagnosed, with disparities among sociodemographic groups with limited material and social resources, partly driven by community-level environmental and social conditions along with healthcare-related factors.
OBJECTIVES: We sought to investigate associations between multifactorial community-level environmental, social, and health burdens and SDB prevalence. We also determined effect modification by age, sex, race, and ethnicity.

Directed hypergraphs have gained increasing attention for modeling group interactions while preserving directionality. However, link prediction in directed hypergraphs has rarely been studied despite its practical significance in complex systems analysis. Existing models perform poorly due to three major challenges in directed hypergraphs: 1) lacking effective feature initialization methods; 2) neglecting to detect higher order substructures; and 3) failing to capture long-range dependencies among vertices. To address these challenges, we propose a novel directed hypergraph motif-based neural

The purpose of this study is to gain an in-depth understanding of African American breast cancer survivors' experiences, barriers and facilitators in accessing breast cancer treatment, and challenges in adherence to follow-up care. We conducted seven focus groups with 32 African American women with breast cancer in three rural counties in eastern North Carolina during August-November 2013. Surveys were also utilized to gather basic demographic and breast health history information. Thematic analysis was performed using the immersion crystallization approach. Several common areas of life affect

It is known that humans and rodents are capable of transmitting stress to their naive partners via social interaction. However, a comprehensive understanding of transmitted stress, which may differ from authentic stress, thus revealing unique neural mechanisms of social interaction resulting from transmitted stress and the associated anxiety, is missing. We used, in the present study, maternal separation (MS) as a stress model to investigate whether MS causes abnormal behavior in adolescence. A key concern in the analysis of stress transmission is whether the littermates of MS mice who only wi

BACKGROUND: Health lifestyles exert a substantial influence on the quality of everyday life, primarily affecting health maintenance and enhancement. While health-related practices during the COVID-19 pandemic may have positively altered the health lifestyles of Canadians to a certain degree, government reports indicate that issues related to health behaviors, such as cigarette smoking, physical inactivity, and alcohol consumption, continue to pose challenges to the health of Canadians. Social determinants of these health behaviors thus hold significant academic value in the formulation of poli

BACKGROUND: While women's homelessness is increasingly recognized as a gendered issue, experiences of aging while homeless remain underexplored. This study examined how older women navigate intersections of aging, health, and homelessness, focusing on how these experiences are shaped by structural and social factors.
METHODS: Women's lived experiences were explored and interpreted using a narrative approach. Eleven women (aged 57-65 years) took part in two in-depth interviews each, followed by participation in three sequential focus groups. Data were analyzed iteratively informed by Riessman'

BACKGROUND: This study responds to an important research gap around the impact of socioemotional variables and mental health on young emerging adults in the Spanish university context. Although previous research has explored these dynamics in international populations, there is limited knowledge about how these interactions manifest in the Mediterranean cultural model of transition to adulthood, characterised by distinctive socioeconomic and familial factors. This paper not only describes the prevalence of symptoms of psychological distress, but also identifies protective (social support and e
