Tourette syndrome: a disorder of the social decision-making network.

Tourette syndrome is a common neurodevelopmental disorder defined by characteristic involuntary movements, tics, with both motor and phonic components. Tourette syndrome is usually conceptualized as a basal ganglia disorder, with an emphasis on striatal dysfunction. While considerable evidence is consistent with these concepts, imaging data suggest diffuse functional and structural abnormalities in Tourette syndrome brain. Tourette syndrome exhibits features that are difficult to explain solely based on basal ganglia circuit dysfunctions. These features include the natural history of tic expre

Informal social support for chronic pain and distress in people with HIV: identifying targets for intervention.

Social factors are consequences and determinants of chronic pain, yet little is known about how informal social support operates for people with chronic pain and HIV. The overlapping burdens of emotional distress and chronic pain in people living with HIV raise the need to identify targets for culturally resonant treatments. This qualitative study explored how people living with chronic or recurrent pain and HIV seek informal social support for pain and distress from their social networks, how these networks operate, and how social support is influenced by socio-ecological factors. Adults with

'My parkrun friends.' A qualitative study of social experiences of men at parkrun in Ireland.

Social support is a well-established determinant of mental wellbeing. Community initiatives, which combine a purposeful activity with social connection, may be appropriate to promote the mental wellbeing of middle-aged men in Ireland-a group at risk of poor mental wellbeing due to social isolation. parkrun offers free, weekly, 5km run or walk events in 22 countries. This study aims to explore the social experience of parkrun participation for middle-aged men in Ireland and considers how social connections made at parkrun relate to mental wellbeing. Online semi-structured interviews were conduc

"If the social circle is engaged, more pregnant women will successfully quit smoking": a qualitative study of the experiences of midwives in the Netherlands with smoking cessation care.

BACKGROUND: If smoking is common within a pregnant woman's social circle, she is more likely to smoke and her chances of succeeding in quitting smoking are reduced. It is therefore important to encourage smoking cessation in a pregnant woman's social circle. Midwives are ideally positioned to help pregnant women and members of their social circle quit smoking but there is currently little knowledge about if and how midwives approach smoking cessation with pregnant women's social circles. METHODS: In 2017 and 2018, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 birth care providers in the N

Socioeconomic correlates of social asymmetry in English older adults: Findings from a population-based cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: Discrepancies between loneliness and social isolation (i.e., social asymmetry) are linked to physical and psychological health in later life. While psychological correlates of social asymmetry are increasingly documented, socioeconomic correlates remain underexplored. The study examined whether individual- and area-level socioeconomic indicators were longitudinally associated with social asymmetry in English older adults. METHODS: Data were drawn from 8,164 older adults aged 60+ participating in Waves 7-9 (2014-2019) of the English Longitudinal Study on Ageing. Social asymmetry wa

Multidimensional social capital and latent anxiety severity profiles among Chinese medical graduate students: A multicenter cross-sectional study.

Mental health issues, such as anxiety, are highly prevalent among medical graduate students. However, the potential relationship between social capital and anxiety symptoms in medical graduate students has not yet been investigated. Therefore, data were collected in 2024 from a multicenter sample of 2,587 medical graduate students obtained through multistage stratified sampling across northern, central, and southern Anhui Province. Anxiety symptoms were assessed using the 20-item Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS-20). Social capital was evaluated across six dimensions: social participation, socia

Unmet social needs of community-living older adults with dementia: A scoping review.

Dementia-related cognitive decline and ageing-related challenges impact social participation and relationships. Limited knowledge of dementia among family, friends and the public hinder support for interactions with those affected. Unmet social needs in community-living older adults with dementia remain underrecognized, despite their importance in healthy ageing and quality of life. This scoping review mapped existing evidence on unmet social needs of community-living older adults with dementia, including how these needs vary across dementia stages. We conducted a scoping review following Pref

Comparison of Social-Evaluative Anxiety and Theory of Mind Functions in Social Anxiety Disorder, Schizophrenia, and Healthy Controls.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the similarities in poor social competence and clinical manifestations of poor social behavior, no study has compared the theory of mind performance between social anxiety disorder (SAD) and schizophrenia, considering the effect of social-evaluative anxiety and neurocognitive functions. In our study, we aimed to compare the theory of mind functions and social-evaluative anxiety between patients with SAD and schizophrenia and healthy controls and to examine the relationship between the theory of mind, neurocognitive skills, and social-evaluative anxiety. Using social media listening to understand barriers to genomic medicine for those living with Ehlers-Danlos syndromes and hypermobility spectrum disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Technological improvements alone have not led to the integration of genomic medicine across a broad range of diseases and populations. For genomic medicine to be successfully implemented across specialties and conditions, the challenges patients and caregivers experience need to be identified using a multi-faceted understanding of the context in which these obstacles occur and how they are experienced. Individuals affected by rare conditions, like Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) and hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD), express numerous challenges with accessing genomic medicine.

Psychometric analysis of the Oral Health Behavior Social Support Short Form scales (OHBSS-SF) among Mexican-American adults.

BACKGROUND: Social support is an important psychosocial resource that can facilitate engaging in healthy behaviors, including oral health behaviors. Nine scales assessing Oral Health Behavior Social Support (OHBSS) for brushing, flossing and seeking dental care were developed and validated in the English and Spanish languages. The full-length scales included 37 required items to assess social support from three sources: family, health providers, and others/friends. The OHBSS-SF scales cover three oral health behaviors, use six items each to assess social support for brushing, flossing and dent

Psychosocial and Socioeconomic Patterns of Post-Rehabilitation Reintegration Among Former Substance Users in China: An Exploratory Multiple Correspondence Analysis of Administrative Case Records.

BACKGROUND: Relapse risks and social reintegration after substance rehabilitation are not only influenced by the individual's social context, but also by social, family, and socioeconomic circumstances. However, there is limited quantitative research that has studied the co-occurrence of these factors among persons who have been rehabilitated from substance dependence in the Chinese context. METHODS: Administrative case narratives from the Legal Services Casebook Database of the Ministry of Justice of China from 2017 to 2021 were analysed. Of the 227 drug rehabilitation-related cases initiall

Musical engagement as a duet of tight synchrony and loose interpretability.

Joint engagement in music often facilitates positive social interaction, effectively shifting participants' perspective from the individual to the collective. The result is tight coordination and uniformity between participants, but at the same time, also remarkable flexibility and creativity. How does music achieve such a fine balance between the strict alignment necessary for coordination, and the substantial latitude necessary for experimentation? To address this question, I propose to analyze joint music engagement within the tight-loose theoretical framework broadly used in the social sci
